Forward-ports the fixes made on release/0.7.0 (0.7.0 shipped from 3539ace0f) to main, plus the draft-release publish fix from #2220. Every carried commit is a git cherry-pick -x in branch order, so each keeps its original subject and gains a (cherry picked from commit …) trailer. Co-authored-by trailers in the original messages are stripped.

None of these fixes was already on main: git log origin/main has none of the PR numbers, and none of the subjects. Git's rename detection carried the hunks that the release branch made under crates/minimal-tui/ and crates/sandbox2/ onto crates/minimal/src/dash/ and crates/sandbox/.

#2184 is the fix for inbox#1051.

Closes https://github.com/gominimal/inbox/issues/1051

Skipped

  • e99c137da (#2174), the re-pick of #2166. It is an empty commit on the release branch, and 4ac474e42 above already carries the change.

Excluded

  • 7af79e7c6 (#2189), 0e648de5e (#2198) and 3539ace0f (#2212) are the 0.7.0-rc1, rc2 and 0.7.0 version bumps. main is already at 0.8.0 and keeps that version.

#2214 was first meant to stay on the release branch only. It is now carried by request: main drops the AUR, Homebrew and nfpm packaging too.

Conflicts

  • #2173, crates/minimald/src/net/classifier.rs: main renamed sandbox2 to sandbox (#2106). The resolution keeps the release branch's reworded live_words and uses sandbox::classifier::install_hint().
  • #2187, crates/minimal/src/cmd/session.rs: both sides extended the session_via_ssh doc comment. The resolution keeps the release branch's sentence about which boxes subscribe ([host_asks_target]) and main's paragraph about the Handoff return. The code merged cleanly.
  • #2184, deny.toml: both sides added the RUSTSEC-2024-0449 ignore (main in #2194). The resolution keeps main's entry and comment, so the ignore appears once.
  • #2214 applied cleanly. Afterwards, a grep of the tree for nfpm, PKGBUILD, publish-aur, publish-brew, publish-packages, publish_packages, pkg-smoke, render-packaging, package-nfpm, --pkg-dir and minimal-bin finds nothing. The remaining Homebrew mentions are about libkrun and developer tooling, not distribution packages. packaging/macos/ and packaging/apparmor/ stay. publish-packages.yml is deleted, and its publish-release job lives on as promote.yml's inline publish job, as on the release branch. After the pick, promote.yml and release.yml match release/0.7.0 byte for byte.
  • #2220 applied cleanly to that inline publish job. It finds the release by listing releases with --paginate and matching tag_name, and fails when none or more than one carries the tag. It then publishes by id with gh api -X PATCH, setting tag_name, target_commitish, draft=false and make_latest.

New commits

  • 465660ece fix(minimald): name the hand-over bind message in the actor's span. main added a per-message span-name match (crates/minimald/src/session/kind.rs, #1995). That match did not cover BindHandedPort, the message #2186 added, so minimald failed to compile (E0004). The new commit adds the arm.
  • 9bc208000 fix(minimald): spawn the forward-ported tasks through the traced helpers. main routes every minimald spawn through crate::traced and makes clippy deny a plain tokio::spawn. The hand-over loop that #2186 added runs for the manager's whole life, so it now uses traced::spawn_detached under its own root span, sessions.hand_overs. The fake forwarder in the policy tests uses traced::spawn, as the other tests there do.

Review fixes

These are the fixes for the first CodeRabbit review.

  • fc9c8a824 fix(minvmd): say connection in the singular when the cap is one.
  • 35a953e24 docs(cli-min): qualify the own_ip deny-all default by the box's egress declaration.
  • ecf248e81 test(e2e): expect the bundle's program in the range proof when the step installs the bundle.

Workflow edits

This PR changes three workflow files.

  • promote.yml: changed by #2214 and #2220.
  • publish-packages.yml: deleted by #2214.
  • release.yml: changed by #2214 and by #2188. #2188 assembles, signs, notarizes, staples and flattens the Minimal.app bundle for minzoned.

The release.yml part of #2188 cannot be dropped on its own. The same commit's install.sh and stage-release.sh expect the flattened bundle files. Without the workflow change, the next release would ship a bare minzoned that the installer no longer lays down. The commits after it (#2195, #2196, #2211) build on its resolver.rs.

Verification

macOS (darwin scope, run at fe7e900a6 before the two minimald commits; those commits touch only minimald, which macOS does not build):

  • just fmt-check: exit 0.
  • just check-version: exit 0. Output: next-version: package.version 0.8.0 satisfies the 383 commit(s) since v0.6.0 (minor bump, at least 0.7.0) and is greater than the newest tag v0.7.0.
  • just clippy (-p minvmd -p sessions): exit 0.
  • just clippy-strict: exit 2, one hit on a carried line: crates/minvmd/src/net/answerer.rs:3406: non-binding let on an expression with #[must_use] type [clippy::let_underscore_must_use]. This gate runs only locally, so the hit is reported here and left as carried.
  • just deny: exit 0. Output: advisories ok, bans ok, licenses ok, sources ok.
  • just test: exit 0. Output: Summary [11.439s] 1231 tests run: 1231 passed, 23 skipped.
  • just doctest: exit 0. Output: test result: ok. 5 passed; 0 failed.
  • just zoned-link-check: exit 0. Output: target/debug/minzoned resolves only system libraries with no embedded search path — verdict: ok.
  • just test-installer: exit 0. Output: # 756 passed, 0 failed under both sh and dash.
  • just lint-shell: exit 0. Output: lint-shell: 44 script(s) passed shellcheck.
  • just fmt-check at 9bc208000: exit 0.
  • actionlint .github/workflows/promote.yml .github/workflows/release.yml: exit 0, no findings.

Linux (lima-test.sh fix/forward-port-0.7.0-to-main 'just ci'):

  • At fe7e900a6: failed in just clippy with E0004 non-exhaustive patterns: SessionMessage::BindHandedPort not covered (crates/minimald/src/session/kind.rs). 465660ece fixes it.

  • At 465660ece: failed in just clippy with disallowed method tokio::task::spawn (crates/minimald/src/sessions.rs:608, crates/minimald/src/net/policy.rs:2460). 9bc208000 fixes it.

  • At 9bc208000, just ci ran fmt-check, check-version and clippy, all exit 0 on the workspace scope. It stopped at just clippy-strict, which exited 2 with 7 hits, all on carried lines:

    • answerer.rs:3406 let_underscore_must_use
    • resolver.rs:1308 and resolver.rs:9894 string_slice
    • dns.rs:3753, 3767 and 3772 assertions_on_result_states
    • session/tests.rs:6733 string_slice

This gate runs only locally, so the hits are reported here and left as they were carried.

  • The remaining just ci gates, run at 9bc208000:

    • just deny: exit 0. Output: advisories ok, bans ok, licenses ok, sources ok.
    • just test: exit 0. Output: Summary [46.674s] 4026 tests run: 4026 passed (1 leaky), 25 skipped.
    • just doctest: exit 0.
    • just test-ignored: exit 100. Output: 25 tests run: 23 passed, 2 failed. The two failures are mctx tests::toplevel_layer_init_and_build and mctx tests::task_env (/bbin/touch exit 125 in the sandbox). Unmodified main (a3f2fa97c) fails the same two tests on the same host (23 passed, 2 failed), so the failure comes from the lima host, not from this PR.
    • just zoned-link-check: the harness's shared CARGO_TARGET_DIR puts the binary outside target/, so the recipe's own script was run on the built binary. Output: …/debug/minzoned resolves only system libraries with no embedded search path — verdict: ok.

PR CI at 9bc208000: ci-success, ci-linux-native-success, ci-linux-kvm-success, ci-macos-success and ci-shell-installer-success all pass, and ci-kani-success passes too.

commitlint fails on two carried commits whose original messages break its length rules. The body of #2172 has a 101-column line, and the subject of #2183 is 107 columns. These commits keep their original messages. main merges through the merge queue with a squash, so per-commit messages never reach main. The branch is not force-pushed to reword them. commitlint 8000 is not one of the lane aggregators.

Review-fix round, at ecf248e81:

  • just test -E 'test(/refused_past/)' (macOS), after changing only the tests' expected text: 3 of 5 fail (the singular is pinned before the fix). After fc9c8a824: 5 tests run: 5 passed.
  • macOS gates:
    • just fmt-check, just check-version, just clippy, just deny, just doctest, just zoned-link-check: all exit 0.
    • just test: 1231 tests run: 1231 passed, 23 skipped.
    • just lint-shell: 44 script(s) passed shellcheck.
    • just clippy-strict: exit 2, still only the one carried answerer.rs:3406 hit.
  • just lint-prose docs/reference/cli-min.md: no alerts on the changed lines. The file's alert count is the same as before the edit, 109 errors.
  • Linux (lima), at ecf248e81:
    • just clippy: exit 0.
    • The first just test runs failed because the harness's shared target directory held stale sessions and switch libraries from another branch.
    • CLEAN_CRATES="switch minvmd" lima-test.sh fix/forward-port-0.7.0-to-main 'just test': 4026 tests run: 4026 passed (1 leaky), 25 skipped.
  • The privileged macOS range proof (MINIMAL_E2E_PRIVILEGED=1) was not run, because it installs a root LaunchDaemon. Its plist detection was checked against hand-built samples of both script shapes.

…put in plain language (#2169)

(cherry picked from commit 1bcd730)
* docs(minimal): reword activate network and egress flag help

Replace jargon-heavy help on seven network and egress flags of
min session activate (network, dynamic-ingress, dynamic-range,
allow-subnets, allow-dns-hosts, deny-all-egress, credentialed-
upstream) with plain-language wording: name the commands and
modes a person types, say what each stance does, and drop
internal ids and crate paths from user-facing help. Match the
one affected --network row in docs/reference/cli-min.md.

* docs(minimal): state which network mode enforces the egress flags

The reworded `--allow-subnets` help said the egress flags work with
`host_ip`. They are accepted there, and only `own_ip` enforces the rule
flags: a host that decides per box refuses the create, and any other
host runs the box with the rules unenforced. Say that in the help and in
the matching reference row.

State the per-list rule where the flags are read: once any egress flag
is given, an allow list that is not given allows nothing. Reword
`--allow-protocols` and `--deny-subnets` in the same voice as the other
egress flags, restore the host_ip clause on `--deny-all-egress`, and
name the host, not the daemon, as the one that opts out.

* docs(minimal): say a hostname-only egress rule reaches no address directly

* chore(minvmd): reword refusal messages in plain language

The box and socket control refusals leaned on internal vocabulary
(box rows, asks, gvproxy, provider directories). Reword the
user-facing strings so a person operating a VM can tell what went
wrong and what to do next, without changing behavior, exit codes,
or how the client classifies each refusal.

Wording-only change: no control flow, classification, or error-kind
moves. Test assertions that pinned the old strings are updated to
pin the new ones.

* fix(minvmd): make three reworded refusals say what the code checks

The exhaustion counts cover addresses a shutting-down box still holds,
not only ones inside the reuse wait. A withdrawal can land with no box
to remove. The switch-socket wait proves a failed connect, not a
missing socket. The capacity classifier's comment no longer claims a
prefix the control socket stopped adding.

* fix(minvmd): name the connection kind in the cap refusal again

The cap refusal says which of the four capped connection kinds is
full, in plain words, and each test pins its own kind. A refused
address allocation keeps a short plain prefix, so the reply reads
whole whatever the answerer's reason says. The state-directory
refusals name the fix, the exhaustion count handles the singular, and
the port prompt refusal drops the thread.

* fix(minvmd): name the resting rule only when an address is resting

An exhausted run with every address live said "0 were released but
cannot be reused yet", a rule that did not apply. The clause is now
written only when an address is resting, and the zero and plural forms
are tested.

Also: an unknown connection kind is echoed in the cap refusal instead
of reading as a control connection, the network helper refusals name
gvproxy, and the state directory refusal names the VM host daemon.

…2175)

* fix(cli, tui): reword cleanup and status warnings in plain language

The activate cleanup, port-collision, package-check, cache and
dashboard status messages leaned on RPC names and internal
jargon (AbortSession, DestroySession, deny-all, NoNet, warming
the host cache). Users could not tell what went wrong or what to
do next.

Say what happened and what to do instead: name the session that
could not be cancelled or removed and point at the command that
removes it; say the box does not get the port rather than
first-come on the shared address; say package names were not
checked rather than the package check was skipped; say packages
are not downloaded now rather than not warming the host cache;
and the dashboard notes now say what the box cannot do and how to
create it differently. Two tests pinning the old wording are
updated to the new strings.

* fix(tui): give the deny-all note a command that runs as written

The status line named `min session activate --allow-subnets` with no
operand, which clap refuses, and without `--network own_ip`, which makes
a host-address box instead of the own-address one the note is about.

* fix(cli, tui): keep the shared network notes and finish the cleanup warnings

Restore the dashboard's deny-all and no-network notes so they match the
sentences `min session activate` and `min session policy` print. Reword
the destroy timeout warning like its siblings, name `min session destroy`
in the cancel warnings, and point the package-check warning at the daemon
log.

---------

(cherry picked from commit 9f835f2)
…2173)

* fix(minimald): reword network refusals and errors in plain language

Replace internal jargon in the session daemon's user-facing refusal
and error strings: host_ip egress refusals now say what the machine
can and cannot do, the stale DNS carve-out refusal names the
observable symptom and remedy without 'carve-out' or 'zone answerer',
and task/sandbox network errors no longer say 'PTask', 'tap', or
'row on the VM host'.

Every test needle and e2e grep that pinned the old wording is
updated to the new strings; behavior is unchanged.

* docs(minimald): match the unenforceable-refusal doc comment to its reworded remedy

* fix(minimald): name the minimal.toml remedy and the VM host daemon in reworded refusals

The host_ip refusal names the egress-section form of deny-all beside the flag
again, since the refused rules can come from minimal.toml. The task refusal
says "the VM host daemon". A stale-rules refusal with no recorded address
says the rules do not allow DNS at any address. The doc comments match the
words they describe.

* fix(minimald): name the session argument in the task refusal remedy

A bare `min session destroy` fails: the command needs a session or `--all`. The refusal a task
gets when its network addresses cannot be confirmed now shows `min session destroy <session>`,
the form the attach refusals use, and the test pins it.

(cherry picked from commit 1ab661e)
…ain language (#2172)

* chore(minimald): reword attach and port-request failures plainly

Replace jargon in the session daemon's user-facing errors with plain
language: attach/spawn failures no longer say 'channel', 'host-side
network registration', or 'pending-ask queue'; runtime port-publish
refusals name the concrete fact that decided them (missing
--dynamic-range, address not registered on the host machine, box not
running) instead of internal nouns like 'report door', 'row', and
'stance'. Typed Display arms, the io::Error sites that wrap them, and
every pinned test assertion are updated together; behaviour is
unchanged.

* fix(minimald): keep the next step in the not-running and not-connected port refusals

The reworded refusals dropped "start the box and try again", leaving a
caller with the verdict and no way forward. Keep the plain wording and
restore the remedy.

* fix(minimald): name the session in the destroy step and stop claiming a failed launch never started

`min session destroy` needs a session or --all, so the two refusals that
point at it now show the argument. A launch whose record write fails has
already spawned its sandbox, so the refusal says starting failed rather
than that the session was not started.

* fix(minimald): name the VM host daemon and the port prompt in the reworded refusals

The reworded attach and port-publish failures called the VM host daemon
"the host machine" and "this machine", and a dynamic-ingress ask a
"request". They now use the product's own names for both, so the
daemon's text and the text it embeds from the VM host daemon read as one
sentence. Port-publish refusals speak of "this box"; attach refusals
keep "this session".

The port-report arms that the same `min net expose` prints are reworded
to match, and the launch-record failure no longer names egress
enforcement, which was wrong for the host-row binding write that returns
the same variant.

Tests pin the refused port report's lead and the session argument of the
destroy step.

…s errors (#2180)

* fix(sessions): reword credentialed-upstream policy row and ingress errors

The credentialed-upstream lane row described itself as
"box egress proxy listener", which names the mechanism rather
than what the lane grants. Ingress validation errors printed
the protocol with Rust debug formatting ("Tcp") and referred
to "gvproxy's static forwarder", which a user cannot act on.

Reword the row to "allowed to reach the Box Egress Proxy" and
the errors to plain statements of what is wrong and what is
supported ("only tcp and udp are supported"). Update the
pinned expectations in sessions, minimal, and minimal-tui
(including the regenerated TUI snapshot) and the two cli-min
reference examples that quote the row.

(cherry picked from commit 5de03f4)

* test(sessions): pin the reworded ingress mapping errors

Pin the two ingress port-mapping error sentences, so the lowercase
protocol name stays the one a user types in --ingress. Name the proxy
in the cli-min prose the way the policy row above it does.

(cherry picked from commit 93baffe)

---------

(cherry picked from commit c888a3e)
* fix(minimal): say the finalize-install egress item plainly

The classifier item of min finalize-install --show rendered in design
vocabulary a reader cannot act on: "classifier", "host-address
boxes", "run unenforced", "egress verdict", "placement unit",
"runs unplaced", "delegation", "socket table lookup", "did not
read". Reword its label, its three today lines, its this-step line,
its eight cannot-do causes, and the matching KVM-item cause in plain
language that names the CLI words (--network host_ip with
--deny-all-egress), and update the six pinned unit-test assertions.
Wording only: no behaviour, flag, JSON key, item id or exit code
changes.

(cherry picked from commit 9920ade)

* fix(minimal): state what the egress item's missing units and stale copy cost

Without its systemd units a daemon restart leaves the daemon outside the
tree, so a deny-all box is refused, not run unenforced; only a reboot
loses the tree. The stale-copy state also covers a host with no copy at
all. The label becomes a noun phrase so a done line never reads as a claim
that deny-all egress is enforced on a host whose table is not refusing, and
drops the flag form, which named only one of the two ways to declare it.

* fix(minimal): hedge the egress item's missing-units line and pin its label

The missing-units line fires when any one unit or wants link is absent, so
it says what a daemon restart and a reboot can cost, not what they always
cost. The label names the flag pair that declares the box and a unit test
pins it.

…n language (#2182)

* fix(minimal): reword the min ls header rows and list warnings in plain language

Rename the ZONE ANSWERER row label to DNS SERVICE and NAME SURFACE to
BOX NAMES (17-column width kept), say what each port row is for instead
of the unrunnable resolver instruction, and reword three list warnings:
the skipped-VM warning names the consequence, the proxy-down warning
drops the implementation words, and the still-starting duplicate-session
warning points at `min ls` and `min session attach`.

Comments, test pins and session-e2e.sh reads that name the old labels
move with them. No behaviour, flag, JSON field or exit code changes.

(cherry picked from commit 2a1ecb0)

* fix(minimal): name the session in the wait-then-attach hint

The duplicate-session warning for a session still being created named a
bare `min session attach`, which fails as printed; it now carries the
same key the active arm prints.

`min finalize-install` reads the same listings as `min ls` but lists no
sessions, so the skipped-VM warning only says "its sessions are not
listed" under `min ls`.

* fix(minimal): keep the DNS row body, name the hostname proxy and show the attach placeholder

Restore the native DNS row body to the text the VM-host arms and
`min session activate` still print, so one row has one wording.
Name the proxy in the listener warning as the HOSTNAME PROXY row does,
and pin the e2e patterns on the `warning: ` prefix so the row bodies
cannot satisfy them. Show `min session attach <session>` in the
still-being-created hint so no printed command names a session attach
would refuse.

* fix(minimal): print the DNS service label at session start

min ls names the row DNS SERVICE, so min session activate now prints
"DNS service:" where it printed "zone answerer:". Both verbs name the
same holder under the same label. The text after the label is unchanged.

Comments that still named the old min ls rows, ZONE ANSWERER and
NAME SURFACE, now say DNS SERVICE and BOX NAMES.

…art messages in plain language (#2183)

* fix(minimal): say what answers box names plainly in min ls and at session start

Reword the DNS SERVICE row in every arm and on both verbs: the native
rows in min ls, the VM-backed rows, and the DNS service line at session
start now say what answers box names on 127.0.0.1:<port> in one plain
sentence, and no longer tell the reader to point the resolver at it.

Reword the BOX NAMES row, the HOSTNAME PROXY row when the proxy is down,
the proxy-down causes and the session-start warning for a port held by
another program. The row no longer prints the service's socket path, so
vm_host_answerer_line_at folds into vm_host_answerer_line.

Tests and scripts/session-e2e.sh that pin the old text follow. No
behaviour changes: only the words printed.

* fix(minimal): reword the names line and the setup script messages in plain language

The session-start names line now says a box name opens through the HTTP
proxy at 127.0.0.1:<port>, and joins a proxy-down cause with a colon.

min finalize-install says what to change when lookups bypass
systemd-resolved, tells a second user how the service's owner removes
it, and says a path could not be read. Its root script calls the
service Minimal's DNS service in every failure line, and the removal
script header and the macOS loopback script header say what they do.

Tests and docs/reference/cli-min.md that pin the old text follow. No
behaviour changes: the scripts' commands are the same, only echo text
and comments change.

* fix(minimal): reword session start, policy and stop messages in plain language

Reword the deny-all note at activate, the two usage errors for ingress
flags without --network own_ip, the attach warning about port prompts,
five pieces of min session policy output, and the two min stop --force
messages, so each says what state the user is in without design terms.

min session destroy now prints the daemon's own error text instead of
naming the RPC; the exit code is the same.

Tests, docs/reference/cli-min.md and scripts/session-e2e.sh that pin the
old text follow. No behaviour changes.

* test(minimal): pin the reworded port-did-not-come-free reason in the setup script

The Linux setup script test still asserted the old (a collision) words
the previous commit removed from the script's failure reason. No
behaviour changes.

* fix(minimal): name the VM host daemon as the answerer and show the flags a VM restart needs

The holder arm of the DNS row said the running VM answers box names
itself. The answerer runs in the VM host daemon, a process on this
machine, so the row and the session-start line now say so, in the same
shape as the other two answered arms.

The late-refusal remedy named bare `min stop` and `min ls`. On a named
VM or a Linux host that selects the VM with --provider, those act on a
different daemon, so the remedy now says to keep the same flags.

The three proxy phrases that had dropped to "the proxy" name the
hostname proxy again, as the HOSTNAME PROXY row does, and the port-prompt
warning shows the attach command with the session filled in.

* test(minimal): say the reworded native-DNS lines in the e2e failure messages

* fix(minimal): match the dashboard notes to the CLI and use the fixed DNS row sentence

The dashboard's no-network note and its deny-all default note now say what
`min session policy` and `min session activate` say. The DNS row's first
arm reads "this VM's host daemon answers its box names", the removal script
header says "Minimal's DNS service", and the reference no longer names an
egress section in minimal.toml, which nothing reads.

Tests pin the two refusal remedies and the proxy row's own sentence.

* style(minimal): format the reworded answerer pins

…t row (#2187)

* fix(minimal): skip the port-prompt subscription for a box with no host row

On a VM-backed host every interactive attach to a box on the default
network mode printed two warnings before the shell took over. The attach
subscribed to port prompts for every box, but only an own_ip box registers
a row with the VM host daemon, so the row read answered "no row" for a
feature the box does not have.

Subscribe only when the session's record carries box_addresses. A
subscription that was attempted and failed now says so once: the logged
event drops to debug and the printed line stays.

* fix(minimal): keep the port-prompt subscription when the session's record cannot be read

A record that could not be read does not say the box registered no row,
so the attach still subscribes by name and warns once if that fails. A
record that was read and carries no address pair still skips silently.

The session e2e now fails if a default-mode attach prints the port-prompt
warning.

… order (#2185)

* fix(minimald): elect one holder for a shared ingress port by creation order

Several own-address boxes can declare one ingress port at a shared
loopback address. The first to publish holds the port and the others
yield it. When the holder was destroyed, every yielding box became the
holder of record at once, and after a daemon restart the port could go
to a different box than the one that held it before.

The name registry now keeps one holder per address and port. A standing
holder keeps the port. When its publish is withdrawn, leaves the address
or stops naming the port, the lowest session id still publishing it
takes over, and the other boxes report that box as the holder. The
session id is a UUIDv7, so that is the box created earliest.

Withdrawing a publish returns the hand-overs it made. The destroy path
logs them; binding the new holder's forward on a running box is not
part of this change, so the port is bound at that box's next attach.

Resuming sessions at daemon start and the registry's address sweeps now
run in session id order, so a restart elects the same holder.

* fix(minimald): say the re-publish hand-over is logged in place, not delivered to callers

* chore(deny): ignore RUSTSEC-2024-0449 until nickel moves off serde_yaml

…hanging the host (#2195)

* fix(minimal): accept a sticky root-owned directory and check before changing the host

min finalize-install refused to install the DNS service on a Mac whose
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools carries the sticky bit, and left the resolver
file and the local range behind when it refused.

The directory check no longer tests the sticky bit. On a root-owned directory
closed to group and other writes the bit grants nobody anything: it only
narrows who may rename or remove an entry. Ownership and the write bits are
still checked on the directory and every ancestor.

The macOS step now runs the service program's verified copy first, for a bare
program and for an app bundle alike. The copy holds every check that can
refuse, so a refusal leaves no resolver file and no range unit behind.

* fix(minimal): run the linux verified copy before the resolver link

The Linux step had the same ordering as the macOS one: it made the resolver
link before the service program's verified copy, so a refused copy left the
link behind with no service to answer.

The answerer steps are split into a copy half and a unit half, as on macOS.
The copy runs first, then the resolver link, then the units.

… listener is withdrawn (#2186)

* fix(minvmd): bind a waiting declared forward when the row holding its listener is withdrawn

Several boxes can declare one host ingress port at a shared loopback
address. The egress gate keeps one attribution per host listener, so the
second box's publish was relayed to the switch, refused there, and
forgotten. When the holder's row was withdrawn the gate unbound the
listener and nothing bound it again, so the port stayed dead. The unbind
also reached the switch before the ledger dropped its entry, so a publish
relayed in between was bound and attributed to no box, and was never
unbound at its box's end.

A publish for a listener the ledger attributes to another box's address is
no longer relayed. The guest is answered with the status and body the
switch gives a held listener (HTTP 500, "proxy already running"), which is
what it read before. When the port is one the publishing row declared, the
gate keeps the publish as that row's waiting forward: listener, the row's
switch address, inside port and protocol, all from the guest's own request.

At a row's withdrawal, the step that drops a listener's attribution gives
the listener to one waiting forward and the gate sends the expose itself.
Of several waiting forwards the one with the lowest box id is bound: the
host mints the id as a UUIDv7 at registration, so that is the row
registered earliest, whatever order the guest published in. The listener is
never unheld in the ledger across the hand-over.

A failed expose takes the attribution back out, is logged at warn with the
listener and the row, and is retried on the unbind's own backoff. The hold
on the withdrawn box's addresses does not wait on it. A waiting forward is
dropped at its own row's withdrawal, and waiting forwards are bounded as
the ledger is: past the bound a new one is refused and nothing is evicted.

* fix(minvmd): keep a hand-over's attribution when its expose goes unanswered

A hand-over expose that fails without a status read (a connect, write or
read error, or a timeout) may still have been bound by the switch. The
gate released the claim for every failure, so a forward the switch did
bind had no attribution: the waiting row's withdrawal unbound nothing,
released the address, and the next box leased there would receive the
old listener's connections.

The expose now tells a refusal from a lost answer. An unanswered claim
keeps its attribution, so the waiting row's withdrawal unbinds it and no
other box's publish for the listener is relayed, and keeps its waiting
record, so the retries repeat the expose. Only an answered refusal takes
the attribution back out.

A hand-over the ledger had no row-held slot for is now owed a retry
instead of being counted as settled, and the give-up line names both
ways the listener is bound again.

* chore(deny): ignore RUSTSEC-2024-0449 until nickel moves off serde_yaml

unsafe-libyaml is archived upstream with no maintained release. It is reached
only through nickel-lang-core's non-optional serde_yaml dependency, so no
version bump clears the advisory.

(cherry picked from commit 4d0ffdf)

* fix(minvmd): answer a box's publish of a forward the gate already bound for it

A forward the gate binds at a hand-over is one the waiting box's daemon
never asked for, so the box publishes it at its next attach. The ledger
already attributes the listener to that box, so the publish was relayed,
the switch refused it as already running, and the daemon, which treats
any refused bind as fatal, failed the attach every time. The ledger now
marks a listener its own expose bound, and a publish of that same forward
from its own box is answered as bound without being relayed. A publish
at the listener that dials another inside port or protocol is still
relayed for the switch to decide.

A hand-over's retries no longer come out of the unbinds' budget. They
shared one iterator, so a box whose own unbinds used every wait left an
owed hand-over none. An owed hand-over is now retried on the whole
backoff again once the unbinds are done or given up.

A waiting forward is filed only by its own box's publish. A test pins
that a row whose box never published a declared port is bound nothing at
the holder's withdrawal: the row names neither the inside port nor the
protocol an expose needs.

* docs(minvmd): reword the hand-over sentence in the revocation's doc comment

* fix(minvmd): drop a hand-over's mark with its attribution

The set of listeners the gate's own expose bound was cleared only when a
listener was attributed anew, so a hand-over whose box ended with no
later publish left its entry for the gate's lifetime. The mark now goes
wherever the attribution goes, which bounds the set by the row-held side
of the ledger.

* test(minimald): pin the live bind of a shared port when its holder is destroyed

* fix(minimald): bind a shared port for the running box that takes it over

When the box holding a shared-address port is destroyed, drops the port
or moves address, the registry elects the next holder but nothing bound
that box's forward until its next attach, so the port went dark for a
running box.

The registry now sends each hand-over to a subscriber. The session
manager routes it to the elected box's actor, which posts the expose its
own attach would have posted when its host is running, and tracks the
forwarder with the running spawn so the spawn's teardown and the box's
stop unbind it. A box that is not running is asked nothing and binds at
its next attach, as before. A bind the switch refuses is logged and
tracked nowhere: the election stands and the next attach binds the port.

Behind a VM host's gate, the switch's "proxy already running" answer to
the hand-over's expose is the gate still holding the old holder's
listener; the forwarder is tracked and the gate binds it when that row
is withdrawn.

* fix(minvmd): bind the publish the guest sent last, not the lowest box id

The gate chose among the declared forwards waiting on a listener by
lowest box id. The guest's registry is the one elector of a shared
port's holder, by creation order with a running box first, and the two
orders can differ.

A publish for a held listener now replaces any other row's forward
waiting on it, so one forward waits per listener: the one the guest
published last, which names the box it elected. The gate applies that
choice at the holder's row withdrawal and makes none of its own.

* fix(minimald): tell a handed-over forward apart by its protocol

A box may declare TCP and UDP on one external port. The hand-over's
guard against binding a forward twice was keyed by the listener alone,
so the second protocol's forward was skipped once the first was tracked.
The guard now matches the listener and the protocol.

A port one of whose forwards the switch refused is no longer recorded
on the box's record as bound.

* fix(minimal): give each local-range alias a /32 mask

min finalize-install adds 254 loopback aliases with
`ifconfig lo0 alias <addr> 255.255.255.255`. Without the netmask keyword
ifconfig reads the second address as a destination, so each alias took the /8
of its class and all 254 claimed 127.0.0.0/8. On an affected Mac that pinned
mDNSResponder and slowed every name lookup.

The script and the minzoned reserve-local-range verb now pass
`netmask 255.255.255.255`. Both count an address as carried only when lo0
lists it at /32, so a host that already has the /8 aliases gets them applied
again with the right mask on the next run or boot.

* test(minimal): read the mask lo0 carries the local range with

The range step reads done on custody checks alone, and the bind probe reads
a /8 alias as present. So a host whose root-owned range program still applies
the /8 mask is told its install is finished, and that program runs again at
every boot.

This adds the read: the first range address lo0 lists with a mask other than
/32, gathered beside the unit's custody facts. The test that the names step
is offered again over such a host fails here; the next commit makes the
verdict act on the read.

* fix(minimal): offer the names step again while a local-range alias has the wrong mask

A host that ran an earlier range step carries every alias at /8, and its
root-owned range program applies that mask again at every boot. Nothing
replaced the program: the bind probe reads a /8 alias as present, and the
range step read installed on custody checks alone, so min finalize-install
said the install was finished.

The range step now has a wrong-mask state, read when custody holds and lo0
lists an address of the range with a mask other than /32. It does not hold,
so the names step is offered again at session start and by min
finalize-install. The run writes the range program again and reloads its
unit, which applies the range at /32. A healthy /32 host still reads
installed. Hosts other than macOS read no range step and are unchanged.

* docs(minimal): say why the mask read is stricter than the range program's skip

The read counts an address listed at /32 and again at a wider mask as wide,
while the range program skips any address it finds at /32. Say that the gap
is deliberate: an interface holds one entry per address, so no host is known
to list one twice, and if one ever does the step stays open in place of
reading as finished.

* test(minimal): let the host advisory test expect a note while the range step does not hold

session_advisory_agrees_with_the_hook_it_detected reads this host's own
detection and expected no advisory whenever the hook routes the port. On a
Mac whose range step does not hold, the advisory is right to speak, so the
quiet arm now also needs the range step to hold.

* fix(minimal): stop claiming a box name opens in any browser

With native DNS deployed, the session-start host line said
`names: <box>.min.internal resolves in any browser on this machine`.
The name resolves to a reserved local address, but nothing listens
there for a browser, so the connection the line promised is refused.

The native arm now claims resolution only and names the path that
opens the box: the hostname proxy, which keeps serving beside native
DNS (NET-019) and routes box names. With no proxy port the line says
only that the name resolves on this machine.

Updates the host_line doc, the resolver and cli tests that pinned the
old words, the CLI reference, and the NET-142 native requirement.

* test(e2e): match the reworded names line in the session e2e

The e2e asserted the old 'resolves in any browser on this machine' text at
the range-step check and the NET-018 activate check; match the new line.

* ci(release): drop distro packages from the 0.7.0 release

Remove the nfpm packaging step, the packages artifact, the package
attachments on the draft release, the versions/<semver>/pkg/ staging and
the .deb install smoke from release.yml. Remove publish-packages.yml and
the publish_packages input from promote.yml; the draft-release publish
job that lived in publish-packages.yml moves into promote.yml unchanged
in behaviour, so a stable promotion still creates the v<semver> tag.

stage-release.sh loses --pkg-dir/--pkg-only and its harness the matching
cases. The curl|sh installer is the only install path for 0.7.0.

* chore(packaging): remove the aur, homebrew and nfpm packaging

Delete the AUR and Homebrew templates, the nfpm config and its vendored
lock, and the scripts that rendered, built, smoked and published the
packages, with their harnesses and justfile recipes. packaging/macos/
and packaging/apparmor/ stay: the minzoned app bundle and
min finalize-install use them.

Comments that pointed at the removed files are reworded. The
/usr/bin/gvproxy-min probe in the switch crate stays, since hosts that
installed an earlier distro package still have the binary there.

…its tag

The publish job looked the release up with `gh release view v<semver>`.
A draft has no tag yet, so the lookup answered 404 for exactly the
release the job exists to publish, and the 0.7.0 promotion failed there.
Publishing a draft without naming tag_name also tags it with the draft's
untagged-<hex> placeholder rather than v<semver>.

The job now finds the release by listing releases and matching
tag_name, refuses when more than one carries the tag, and publishes by
id with tag_name and target_commitish set.

The per-message span name match that main added for the session actor
does not cover BindHandedPort, the message the forward-ported shared
ingress hand-over sends, so minimald no longer compiles. Give it its
variant name like every other message.
Main routes every minimald spawn through crate::traced and denies a
plain tokio::spawn in clippy. The shared-ingress hand-over loop from the
forward-port serves for the manager's life, so it takes spawn_detached
under a root span of its own; the fake forwarder in the policy tests
takes traced::spawn like its siblings.

Explanation

[#1051] The PR includes gvproxy v0.9.0, the tcpMaxInFlight: 512 and tcpConnectTimeout: 30 settings, version-reference updates, and a render-config test. However, GvproxyConfig::spawn in crates/minvmd/src/net.rs writes the config and launches gvproxy without removing switch_socket first. The required stale-socket removal behavior and its unit test are therefore not implemented. The reported just test-vm and manual 300-connection check are non-coding issue instructions and do not affect this verdict.

Update the privileged range proof to expect the bundled program.

When MINIMAL_E2E_PRIVILEGED=1 runs the macOS range proof, RANGE_PROGRAM_PATH still names the old standalone script. The new range job runs Minimal.app/Contents/MacOS/minzoned; the proof later requires the old path to exist and requires the plist to launch it. The proof therefore fails after a successful install. Point those custody and ProgramArguments checks at the bundled program, and assert that the old script is absent.

The past-the-cap refusal read "limit of 1 control connections" for a
cap of one. Pick the noun by the cap, and pin the singular in the three
tests that run at a cap of one.
…s declaration

The reference said an own_ip box without the egress flags reaches no
external address, but a project minimal.toml can declare egress with no
flags. Say the default applies when the box declares no egress by flag
or in minimal.toml, in the flag table and in the prose below it.
…ep installs the bundle

Since the answerer ships in Minimal.app, a min that finds the bundled
minzoned renders a range unit that runs the bundle's program with the
range verb, and removes the standalone range script. The privileged
range proof still expected that script's path, so on a release-shaped
install its custody, ProgramArguments and launchctl checks would fail.
Read the program off the range plist the setup script carries, check
custody and the loaded job against it, and in the bundle shape also
check the range verb and that the standalone script is gone.

On the outside-diff finding at scripts/session-e2e.sh:7298 (the macOS range proof under MINIMAL_E2E_PRIVILEGED=1): it is valid for release-shaped installs, and is fixed in ecf248e.

I checked it against the resolver that #2188 carries. macos_names_steps picks between two range units:

  • When the copy source is the bundled Minimal.app/Contents/MacOS/minzoned (install.bundle non-empty), it renders macos_range_bundle_steps. That plist has ProgramArguments = [/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Minimal.app/Contents/MacOS/minzoned, reserve-local-range], and the step runs rm -f on the standalone RANGE_PROGRAM_PATH.
  • For a bare minzoned (a dev build, which is what the e2e lanes build), it still writes the script to RANGE_PROGRAM_PATH.

So the old expectation held for dev builds, and would fail on an install whose min finds the bundle.

What changed in the proof:

  • It reads the unit program from the range plist heredoc that the setup script carries. It reads only that heredoc, because the answerer plist names the bundle program in both shapes.
  • The custody stat, ProgramArguments[0] and launchctl print checks now compare against that program.
  • In the bundle shape, it also checks ProgramArguments[1] = reserve-local-range and that the standalone script is gone.

just lint-shell is clean. I checked the detection against hand-built samples of both script shapes. The privileged proof itself was not run, because it installs a root LaunchDaemon and needs passwordless sudo on a macOS host.
