fix(minimal): give each local-range alias a /32 mask - #2196
Conversation
min finalize-install adds 254 loopback aliases with `ifconfig lo0 alias <addr> 255.255.255.255`. Without the netmask keyword ifconfig reads the second address as a destination, so each alias took the /8 of its class and all 254 claimed 127.0.0.0/8. On an affected Mac that pinned mDNSResponder and slowed every name lookup. The script and the minzoned reserve-local-range verb now pass `netmask 255.255.255.255`. Both count an address as carried only when lo0 lists it at /32, so a host that already has the /8 aliases gets them applied again with the right mask on the next run or boot.

The mask fix itself looks right: the netmask keyword, a skip check that needs inet <addr> netmask 0xffffffff (with a trailing space, so 127.0.64.1 can't match 127.0.64.10), and the new /8 test case. One gap is in how an already-affected host gets repaired, inline.

The range step reads done on custody checks alone, and the bind probe reads a /8 alias as present. So a host whose root-owned range program still applies the /8 mask is told its install is finished, and that program runs again at every boot. This adds the read: the first range address lo0 lists with a mask other than /32, gathered beside the unit's custody facts. The test that the names step is offered again over such a host fails here; the next commit makes the verdict act on the read.
…s the wrong mask A host that ran an earlier range step carries every alias at /8, and its root-owned range program applies that mask again at every boot. Nothing replaced the program: the bind probe reads a /8 alias as present, and the range step read installed on custody checks alone, so min finalize-install said the install was finished. The range step now has a wrong-mask state, read when custody holds and lo0 lists an address of the range with a mask other than /32. It does not hold, so the names step is offered again at session start and by min finalize-install. The run writes the range program again and reloads its unit, which applies the range at /32. A healthy /32 host still reads installed. Hosts other than macOS read no range step and are unchanged.
…am's skip The read counts an address listed at /32 and again at a wider mask as wide, while the range program skips any address it finds at /32. Say that the gap is deliberate: an interface holds one entry per address, so no host is known to list one twice, and if one ever does the step stays open in place of reading as finished.

The WrongMask read closes the repair gap: an installed unit that left a range alias wider than /32 now re-offers the names step. Thanks.

…ge step does not hold session_advisory_agrees_with_the_hook_it_detected reads this host's own detection and expected no advisory whenever the hook routes the port. On a Mac whose range step does not hold, the advisory is right to speak, so the quiet arm now also needs the range step to hold.

Problem
min finalize-installadds the 254 loopback addresses boxes use with:Without the
netmaskkeyword, ifconfigreads the second address as a destination address, and the alias takes the default mask of its class. Every alias came out as a /8, not the /32 the code comments describe:So 254 addresses all claimed
127.0.0.0/8. On an affected Mac,mDNSRespondersat near 99% CPU and name lookups took 1–3 s. Re-applying the aliases at /32 on that host brought it back to 0% and lookups to 0.00–0.03 s.The wrong form is in two places: the boot script (
reserve-local-range.sh) and theminzoned reserve-local-rangeverb.Change
ifconfig lo0 alias <addr> netmask 255.255.255.255.lo0lists it with mask0xffffffff. An address carried with any other mask is applied again.min. The copy that runs at boot is the root-owned one an earliermin finalize-installwrote, and that one still applies /8. Before this change nothing replaced it: a /8 alias still binds, so the range read as present, and the range step read as installed on its ownership checks alone. Now the range step also reads the masklo0carries the range with. When an address of the range has any mask other than /32, the step reads as not done, in a newWrongMaskstate.min finalize-installthen lists the names item as missing, with the line "the loopback IPs boxes use (127.0.64.0/24) have the wrong network mask, which can slow name lookups on this machine". Running it writes the range program again and reloads its unit, which applies the range at /32. The session-start note says the same.lo0cannot be read, the step claims nothing and reads as before. Linux reads no range step and is unchanged. What the re-run replaces depends on what the host has:
minzonedinside it. With a build that has no bundle, the run writes the new script. What this change adds there is the line that says the mask is wrong.minzonedverb (a build ofrelease/0.7.0from after that change and before this one, never a tagged release): the service step holds, so the run carries no bundle copy. It writes the new script and points the range unit at it. The aliases end at /32. The range unit is then listed in Login Items as a script until a later run replaces the bundle. This is the one host the old code left at /8 with the install reading as finished.Review points
Re-applying an address
lo0already carries. The repair relies onifconfig lo0 alias <addr> netmask 255.255.255.255accepting an address the interface already carries and changing its mask. A reviewer's run on a Mac with the /8 aliases settled the refusal case: exit 0, andifconfig lo0 inetthen showsinet 127.0.64.1 netmask 0xffffffff. The same reviewer's counts on that host, taken before the other 253 addresses were repaired, show 254 lines at0xff000000(127.0.0.1and127.0.64.2to.254) and one at0xffffffff(127.0.64.1). That is 255 lines for 255 addresses, so the re-applied address has one line and no /8 line beside it. No one printed thegrep '127.0.64.1 'output itself. If a host ever did keep a second, wider line, the new mask read counts that address as wide, so the step would keep reading as not done instead of reading as finished.Cause. The link between the /8 aliases and the
mDNSResponderspin now rests on two hosts. On a reviewer's Mac (macOS 26,min 0.7.0-rc1), moving the aliases to /32 tookmDNSResponderfrom about 99% CPU to 0.0–0.1% and a lookup from 1.26 s to 0.10 s. Another Mac ran for 16 hours with the same /8 aliases and no spin aftermDNSResponderwas restarted, so the /8 mask may be a trigger and not the whole cause. The mask is wrong either way.Verification
