First of the renames that land before BOX (gominimal/inbox#731) is implemented: the sandbox2 crate becomes sandbox. It's the OS isolation layer that boxes and package builds both run in, and the "2" is left over from a predecessor that no longer exists.

AGENTS.md gains a Naming section: a box is the thing, session and task are Box Type names, sandbox is the isolation layer under both, and a box's behaviour keys on its spec settings, never its Box Type name.

How to review

The diff (57 files, +501/−471) is generated. Review the script, then re-run it on main and compare:

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
git mv crates/sandbox2 crates/sandbox
git grep -l -w sandbox2 -- crates Cargo.toml deny.toml docs/architecture.md \
  docs/internal/licensing.md docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking scripts \
  | xargs sed -i -E 's/\bsandbox2\b/sandbox/g'

After the script: cargo update --workspace --offline (lockfile entry only), just fmt (lines the shorter name lets rustfmt rejoin), and the AGENTS.md Naming section. Nothing else is hand-edited.

Left as sandbox2 on purpose: dated spikes (docs/spikes/), the superseded specs 03 and 08, and one comment in the frozen .github/workflows/ci-macos.yml. No workflow builds or tests -p sandbox2, so CI is unaffected.

Conflicts with open PRs

Test-merged against every open PR that shares a file. Only #2039 (and its CI-only copy #2081) gains a conflict: it edits crates/sandbox2/src/lib.rs, which this moves. Re-running the script on that branch after rebasing resolves it. Every other open PR's conflicts are ones it already has with main.

Verification

  • just fmt-check: pass.
  • Full just test locally, on the previous regeneration of this script (one main commit back): 3216/3218 passed. The 2 failures (boxes_lack_cap_net_raw, a_transient_publish_failure_keeps_the_default_port) also fail on plain main in this sandbox: one is a namespace/capability test, and the other was observed failing the same way on main during the run.
  • CI runs the full gate here.

Approved: no findings at f96d546fcfe8.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: the rename is a pure git mv (git detected crates/{sandbox2 => sandbox} wholesale; lib.rs is 100% similarity, config/network/caps only doc-comment changes). No prior fix is reverted.

The crate rename conforms. The Naming section has three points that do not agree with architecture.md. See the line comments.

… rule

The crate is the operating-system isolation layer that boxes and package
builds both run in. It is named for that, and the "2" left over from a
removed predecessor is dropped. AGENTS.md gains a Naming section: a box is
the thing, session and task are Box Type names, and sandbox is the
isolation layer under both; a box's behaviour keys on its spec settings,
never its Box Type name. It is the first of the renames that land before
BOX (gominimal/inbox#731) is implemented.

Generated by a recorded script (git mv, then sed over every live
reference); dated spikes, superseded specs and the frozen workflows keep
the old name. Cargo.lock refreshed and rustfmt applied.

The Naming section described the BOX model as if it existed: a box
command, BoxState and BoxSpec, pty_enabled and Box Type resolution.
Name what the tree has today, link the BOX spec for the Box Types
instead of listing them, and keep the rule as the target for new code.
Backtick the comments the rename left saying a bare "sandbox" for the
crate, and describe the crate in box terms.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01NSAwDroXL6KqsSxUzdbZGw
BOX-160 has minimald read type.root at admission to enforce the type's
constraints. That validates the spec rather than choosing behaviour by
type, so the rule names it alongside type resolution.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01NSAwDroXL6KqsSxUzdbZGw
A Box Host is the running minimald, not the machine. Package builds
are boxes of the build type, which mip does not use yet. The Box Spec
projection reads the type as well as admission.

* ci(macos): take the unit job's crate list from the justfile scope

The macOS unit job named `-p minvmd -p sessions` in three steps, so
renaming a crate (sessions -> boxes, R2) had to edit a frozen,
CODEOWNER-gated workflow. Those steps now call justfile recipes that
expand `{{scope}}`, so the list lives in one place:

- unit tests: `just test --profile ci -E 'not binary(/_integration$/)'`
  (`test` now forwards extra args to nextest positionally)
- doctests: `just doctest`
- testbed archive: `just test-archive <file>` (new recipe)

just is installed by the existing pinned taiki-e/install-action step,
and the paths filter now includes the justfile, since a scope edit
changes what this lane runs. Job names are unchanged.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01NSAwDroXL6KqsSxUzdbZGw

* refactor: rename the sessions crate to boxes

R2 of the box naming plan, after R1 (#2106) renamed sandbox2 to sandbox.
The crate holds the box domain types that min and minimald share, so it
is named for the box; `box` is a Rust keyword, so the crate is `boxes`.

A pure rename: git mv crates/sessions crates/boxes, the package name and
its description, the workspace member and dependency, every dependent
Cargo.toml, every crate path in Rust (`sessions::`, `::sessions::`,
`use sessions`), the justfile scope, the kani script, the specs' verify
lines and the docs that name the crate. Types, modules and serialised
names are unchanged, including minimald's own `sessions` module.
Cargo.lock refreshed and rustfmt applied.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01NSAwDroXL6KqsSxUzdbZGw

* docs: name the boxes crate in the architecture and commit-scope examples

Two crate mentions the rename missed: the bold crate name in the
composition paragraph and the single-crate scope example.

R3 of the box naming plan, after R1 (#2106) and R2 (#2201). The
minimald modules whose subject is the box take box names, and so does
minimal-client's autogen name module:

- sessions -> box_manager (with sessions/composables.rs)
- session -> box_actor (with session/{helpers,kind,tests}.rs)
- session_host -> box_runtime (with session_host/{pty,tests}.rs)
- session_sop -> box_ops
- session_delta -> workspace_delta
- session_shell -> attach_shell
- minimal-client session_name -> box_name

A pure rename: git mv, the mod declarations, every module path
(crate::, minimald::, minimal_client::, bare and grouped imports),
module mentions in doc comments, the source path the minimal test
scans, the RUST_LOG filters in the session e2e, and current docs that
name the files. Types, functions, fields, serialised names and the
min session verb are unchanged. rustfmt applied.

* refactor(minimald): rename the session modules for what they hold

R3 of the box naming plan, after R1 (#2106) and R2 (#2201). The
minimald modules whose subject is the box take box names, and so does
minimal-client's autogen name module:

- sessions -> box_manager (with sessions/composables.rs)
- session -> box_actor (with session/{helpers,kind,tests}.rs)
- session_host -> box_runtime (with session_host/{pty,tests}.rs)
- session_sop -> box_ops
- session_delta -> workspace_delta
- session_shell -> attach_shell
- minimal-client session_name -> box_name

A pure rename: git mv, the mod declarations, every module path
(crate::, minimald::, minimal_client::, bare and grouped imports),
module mentions in doc comments, the source path the minimal test
scans, the RUST_LOG filters in the session e2e, and current docs that
name the files. Types, functions, fields, serialised names and the
min session verb are unchanged. rustfmt applied.

* refactor: rename the session types for the box they model

R4 of the box naming plan: the types and traits whose subject is the
box take box names. SessionStatus becomes BoxState, the minimald actor
and manager become BoxActor and BoxManager with their handles, and the
runtime traits, store traits, exec types and network gate follow.
minimald_rpc::SessionConfig becomes BoxConfig, so the actor's spawn
config is BoxActorConfig. SessionId is left for R5.

A pure rename: no serialised, wire, on-disk, CLI or env name changes.

* refactor: rename the session types for the box they model

R4 of the BOX naming plan, rebuilt on main after R3 (#2228) squash-merged:
the same rename as ff18bf7, applied to main.
