Review of the guest telemetry door (TEL-033, TEL-034, TEL-046, TEL-049, TEL-050) against spec 25 at eed80b0 and guest-vsock.md.
The design is good. The guest has no endpoint, headers or resource attributes on its boot line. The host forwards under its own switches and headers. The queues are bounded, the door does not log guest bytes, and the exit drain is bounded. Every test name on the test: lines of these requirements exists on this head.
One problem must be fixed before merge: the host provenance stamp goes only into the first resource of a line, so a guest can send records that do not show their source. Two more should be fixed: forward the parsed request instead of the original text, and limit bytes as well as lines, so a guest cannot push the host's own records out of the spool.
Note for the spec PR: the verify: line of TEL-034 runs only the mlog test. Consider a_forwarded_line_is_stamped_with_the_hosts_provenance as the verify, because the stamp is the part that protects the host.

The microVM guest daemon no longer exports over the guest's network, which the node's egress baseline governs (minimal#1786) and a `network = none` box host does not have at all. Its spool processors hand each finished span and log record, as the spool's OTLP-JSON line, to a bounded queue; a sender thread in the daemon writes the lines, length-delimited, to the VM host over a vsock port (7353, beside the READY marker's 7350) that the VMM child wires for that VM alone. The `run` supervisor serves the port on a door beside the control socket, appends each accepted line to its own spool, and forwards batches as OTLP/JSON to the host's endpoint for the signal under the host's switches and header rule. The boot line still carries no endpoint: the guest's exporter switches now follow the host's, and `MINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD=vsock:7353` joins the opt-in, the spool and filter settings and `TRACEPARENT`. A box cannot reach the door: no socket-family seal in sandbox admits AF_VSOCK, now pinned by a test. The door treats what arrives as data. It parses each line strictly (serde_json: no comments, trailing commas or repeated keys) as one request with exactly one resource, at most 1 MiB, stamps every resource with the host's provenance (replacing any minimal.* attribute the guest set), and spools and forwards only what it serialized again from the parsed value. A per-VM byte budget (64 KiB/s, 4 MiB burst) that survives reconnects bounds what a guest can add to the host spool. The guest drops a record over the frame bound instead of sending it, and the door keeps a frame's partial bytes across a read timeout. With the receiver away the guest spools, drops at its queue bound, warns once and retries every 5 s (TEL-046). A stop delivers the guest's last spans before the VM goes down. The guest's `rpc` span for Shutdown ends only when the acknowledgement is written, so `minvmd stop` now lets an acknowledging guest power the VM off for up to 3 s before it signals the VMM (TEL-049); signalling at the ack raced the guest's exit-time flush and lost on a loaded host (lab 715k). The guest's exit drain waits for lines written or dropped, not lines taken off the queue, so its power-off does not cut the last write. When the VMM exits, the supervisor drains the door's forward for up to 2 s (TEL-050), so a collector gets the guest's last batch and not only the spool. Spec 25: TEL-033 and TEL-034 rewritten to the design, TEL-046 added, the invariants and the trust model updated; the design note is docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/guest-vsock.md. A VM-lane integration test (minvmd/tests/otel_vsock_integration.rs, MINVMD_E2E=1) boots a real guest and checks the host spool, the host's endpoint and the boot line. spool reader instead of `spool_lines`, which strictly parses lines while the

and skips lines that fail JSON parsing; keep `spool_lines` for the

starts; have it run minvmd_vm with the stop argument during unwinding so a panic
in during or a later assertion cannot leave the VM running. Preserve the

NIT · style · confidence 0.60 · in guest_env
guest_env emits MINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD=vsock:<port> whenever the door is bound (forward == Some), even when every signal is switched off on the host (s.off true for both, so only _EXPORTER=none is pushed and nothing is forwarded). The guest boot line then carries a forward destination it will never use: its init reads MINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD, forces both exporters off, computes forward_traces/forward_logs false, installs no forward queue and never starts the sender, and its summary correctly prints “off”. Nothing observable is wrong, but the token is inert. Guarding the emission on at least one signal being on (e.g. push the token only when forward.is_some() && (decided.traces.on || decided.logs.on)) would keep the boot line to tokens the guest acts on.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

feat(otel): guest telemetry rides the VM channel (7/7, spec 25)
Stack: spec #1988 → test hardening → mlog export → CLI+daemon → minvmd+guest → diag → requirement tests → this → (docs in the spec PR). Base:
otel/6-tests.Answers the spec review's first blocker (guest export rode the node network's temporary allow-all and would stop silently once minimal#1786 enforces the baseline; no network-mode hole covers every box). The guest never uses its network for telemetry:
minimaldin guest mode, mlog): withMINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD=vsock:7353on the boot line, mlog queues each spool line (the same OTLP-JSON line the spool writes, so TEL-014/015 hold) for a sender thread that writes length-delimited frames to the host over vsock port 7353 (CID 2). Bounded queue (1024 lines / 4 MiB), 5 s reconnect, drop-and-count when the host is away; nothing in the guest waits on the host (TEL-046). No OTLP exporter is built in the guest.minvmd): therunsupervisor binds an owner-only telemetry door beside the control socket; the VMM child wires port 7353 for that VM only (the same shape as the READY marker and the report door). The door checks each line strictly (one OTLP request per line, ≤ 1 MiB, ≤ 4096 lines/s per connection; malformed → dropped and counted, never logged), stamps it withminimal.forwarded_by=minvmdandminimal.vm=<name>, writes it to the host spool (somin bugand the lab see guest records) and forwards batches as OTLP/JSON under the host's switches — host off orDO_NOT_TRACK⇒ the door never opens; signal off ⇒ spooled only. Forwarding runs on its own thread behind a bounded queue, so a hung collector never stops the door reading.MINIMAL_TELEMETRY,MINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD, the filter and the exporter-off switches,TRACEPARENT— no endpoint and no header, ever. The endpoint-shape and secret-shape code and theurldependency leave minvmd (TEL-033).AF_VSOCKin any box plan — pinned bysandbox2::no_seal_admits_af_vsock— so only the guest's pid-1 daemon can reach the door. Works for every box networking mode, includingnetwork = none, and identically on Linux (KVM) and macOS (HVF): both use libkrun's single implicit vsock device.guest.readyundervm.boot, one trace id fromcmdto the guest.Evidence: VM-lane test
crates/minvmd/tests/otel_vsock_integration.rs(boots a guest underMINVMD_E2E=1, checksguest.readyin the host spool with the stamps, the forwarded JSON at/v1/traces, and a boot line withFORWARDand no endpoint); unit tests for framing, drop/reconnect, strict parsing, oversize, batching and the stuck-forwarder case; lab (Cloud Hypervisor, debian-12): 715b/715f/715g/715h pass with the dual-shape scenarios, plus 715i (relay bounds: malformed, flooded and oversized frames refused and counted, no guest bytes logged), 715j (collector down: the guest never blocks, spans still land stamped), 715k (graceful stop: guest flushes before the Shutdown ack) and 715l (provenance stamps on every guest span) — all eight pass.
