Review of spec 25 after a comparison with gominimal/arch.
Result: changes requested before merge.
These items are correct:
- the allowlist for the boot line;
- the refusal of endpoints that can contain a secret;
- only
TRACEPARENTgoes into boxes; - the refusal to send headers to a
MINIMAL_endpoint; - no fixed default endpoint.
All test names that the spec refers to exist in #1989.
Three problems prevent merge. Each needs a text change, an architecture decision or a known risk. No code change is necessary in this pull request.
- Guest export (TEL-034) works only because the node network allows all traffic now. Section 5.1 of the design has no collector type. minimal#1786 will stop guest export, and no message will tell the user.
- The host setting puts
TRACEPARENTinto boxes, but the box spec does not show it. This is different from the architecture and from arch#103. Also, limit TEL-023 and the rule at line 723 to the host environment. If you do not, they prevent the[otel]section and inbox#678 S16. - TEL-002 (
DO_NOT_TRACK) and TEL-009 do not agree. A daemon in operation exports spans of a command that hasDO_NOT_TRACK=1. No message tells the user.
Other necessary changes:
- refer to arch#102 for the change to AT20;
- correct the stories and two incorrect notes;
- write the risk of false spans from a box, and add the box identity to daemon spans;
- make issues for the requirements that only lab scenarios or unit tests prove.
Write these known risks in the pull request description:
- the temporary allow-all node rule (#1786);
- export of spans for a command that has
DO_NOT_TRACK=1; - false spans from a box to a collector without authentication;
- requirements that only lab scenarios or macOS unit tests prove;
http://export without encryption from the guest.
Not examined: only spec-lint ran (the Linux KVM check shows cancelled). I did not run the lab scenarios.

Must fix: the host setting puts TRACEPARENT into boxes, but the box spec does not show it.
Problem:
- The architecture says that the box spec controls the box environment (
architecture.md:1201-1202). min box specmust show all that a box gets (architecture.md:485).- gominimal/arch#103 is open. It proposes
TRACEPARENTonly when the box spec asks for it. - Lines 36-38 of this spec say that this rule is not in scope. But TEL-023, TEL-026 and TEL-005 put the variable into the box.
Example:
- A CI runner sets
MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1for all jobs. - A reviewer reads
min box spec. It does not showTRACEPARENT. - The workload gets the host trace context.
- An OpenTelemetry library in the workload uses this context. The workload spans then join the host trace.
Do this. Select one option and record it:
- Option 1: Put
TRACEPARENTinto the box only when the box spec asks for it. This change waits for arch#103. - Option 2: Get a decision on arch#103 that the host setting is sufficient. Then make
min box specshow the variable.
For each option, correct lines 36-38.

Second pass, after the review of 2026-10-05. Two questions: does this spec let users get telemetry from the software in their box, and how does it connect to min bug?
Summary:
- The spec covers Minimal's own processes well. It gives the software in a box only a trace id, and only when Minimal's own export is on. A separate issue tracks telemetry from the software in a box.
- TEL-023 conflicts with the proposed opt-in rule in gominimal/arch#103. Get a ruling before this spec leaves draft.
- TEL-044 is the link to
min bug, and it is the right first step. It disagrees with the Non-goals about the guest spool, it has no test in the repository, and the bundle does not record whether telemetry was on.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Must fix: TEL-023 conflicts with the proposed arch rule for trace propagation.
Problem:
- TEL-023 puts
TRACEPARENTinto every box when host telemetry is on. The box spec has no control over it. - gominimal/arch#103 proposes that propagation into a box is opt-in per Box Spec (a key such as
propagate_trace = true). - If this spec merges first, the box behaviour changes again when arch#103 is decided. Boxes that read
TRACEPARENTtoday will then stop getting it.
Do this:
- Get a ruling on arch#103 before this spec leaves draft.
- If the ruling is opt-in per spec, change TEL-023 to: "WHEN a session exec or run starts in a box whose spec opts in to trace propagation THE SYSTEM SHALL put the exec span's
TRACEPARENTinto the box's environment, and no otherOTEL_*,BAGGAGEor exporter header variable." - If the ruling keeps the host switch, record the ruling in the TEL-023 annotation and cite it.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Agreed, and Mike rules on arch#103. Until then this spec stays draft. The TEL-023 annotation (5b73df8) records the pending ruling and the exact opt-in-per-Box-Spec wording TEL-023 takes if that is the ruling. Behaviour is unchanged meanwhile.

Configured headers leave the machine in requests to the selected collector. This sentence incorrectly says they stay on the machine. Say instead that headers never enter a VM or box, and that users should trust the collector and transport that receive them.

When the host min has telemetry off, TEL-045 requires it to send an opt-out and no TRACEPARENT. These lines instead say that it always forwards trace context, including when it does not export. Limit this description to the in-box helper’s behavior, and state the host CLI rule separately.

A plain per-signal endpoint does not win over MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT. TEL-004 and the reference page put every MINIMAL_ endpoint before every plain endpoint. Correct this table row so it does not direct an implementation to send records to the wrong collector.

Correct the request-header privacy statement.
The Authentication section says configured headers go to the selected collector, but this line says they stay on the machine. That can mislead users about credential egress. State that configured OTLP headers go only to the selected collector and never enter a VM or box. This repeats the prior review finding on header egress.

MEDIUM · correctness · confidence 0.65 · in Non-functional requirements
The Non-functional bounds table claims 'The bounds below are the whole cost telemetry can add to a process' but omits the two exit-time drains the same spec requires and the reference documents: TEL-049 ('minvmd stop' waits up to 3 s for the guest to power off after it acknowledges) and TEL-050 ('minvmd run' waits up to 2 s for the door to drain when the VMM child exits). The table's own 'guest minimald | before the Shutdown ack | 1500 ms' row (TEL-037) is the same kind of unconditional shutdown bound, so the omission is an inconsistency, not an intentional collector-health scoping. docs/reference/telemetry.md:263-270 lists both (3 s and 2 s). An implementer reading the spec's 'whole cost' table would understate the worst-case shutdown wait by up to 5 s.

TEL-001…045, two non-goals), each with the proof that holds it (an in-tree test, a Kani harness, or a lab scenario), a Design reasoning section, non-goals, and the first slice.Decisions recorded in the spec:
MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1; ambientOTEL_*never enables anything (principles 3 and 5);OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERStowards aMINIMAL_endpoint is refused with a fixed message;MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERSis the explicit way;MINIMAL_TELEMETRY(a daemon can be opted out while a CLI is not);TRACEPARENT, and only on opt-in; a nestedmincontinues the trace without exporting itself;minvmdand the guest daemon join the CLI's trace over the boot line; only switches, endpoints andTRACEPARENTcross it, never headers, resource attributes or baggage.Alignment: written against gominimal/arch
5c120151; arch#101–105 (filed from the epic) are unchanged and still open. The implementation PR follows, stacked on this one; the proof table's test names resolve there.Lint:
spec-lintreports 0 findings on the implementation tree (onmainalone the named tests do not exist yet, which the linter reports as P004, the normal state of a spec ahead of its code).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
