feat(mlog): opt-in OpenTelemetry export, switches and a local spool (2/7, spec 25)

Stack: spec #1988 → test hardening → this → CLI+daemon → minvmd+guest → diag → requirement tests → guest telemetry over vsock (7/7). Base: otel/1-test-hardening.

The export core, in one crate and nothing wired yet (7 files, +5236/−5; about 4k of that is in-crate unit tests):

  • crates/mlog/src/otel/switches.rs — the opt-in decision (TEL-001..007): nothing is exported, spooled or connected without MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1; ambient OTEL_* never turns it on; DO_NOT_TRACK and OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true veto; ambient OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS is refused for a MINIMAL_ endpoint (MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS is the explicit form); A CI runner exports only if its environment sets MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1; ambient OTEL_* variables alone never turn export on.
  • crates/mlog/src/otel.rs — the OTLP/HTTP exporter and the tracing layer: bounded shutdown (TEL-038/039), a silent or unreachable collector costs nothing, endpoints logged as origins only.
  • crates/mlog/src/otel/spool.rs — the local OTLP-JSON spool (TEL-010..017), opt-in in this series: one instance id per process, 0700/0600, survives SIGKILL and ENOSPC, rotation and a prune bounded to 7 days / 50 MB. Spool-on-by-default is the next increment.
  • Cargo.toml/Cargo.lock: the opentelemetry crates, pinned; --locked holds at this commit.

Nothing in min, minimald or minvmd calls this yet (that's 3/6 and 4/6), so this PR changes no behaviour on its own.

Evidence: spec 25's test: lines for TEL-001..017 are unit tests here; the switch decision and the spool prune plan are Kani-proved in 6/6; lab scenarios 711/711b (SIGKILL, ENOSPC), 712/712b/712c/712d (opt-in and precedence), 714b (rotation/prune), 719 (collector down), 780/781/783/784/785 pass on four distros (job 00244).

Plan: #1992 (the spec's plan comment). Plan tasks in this PR: T1 telemetry switches · T2 OTLP exporter · T3 spool · T4 pinned/shared spool directory.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds OpenTelemetry dependencies and exposes an otel module. It adds environment-based export decisions, HTTP export, and local OTLP/JSON spooling for spans and logs. It also updates network tests for socket timing and early connection refusal.

Changes: OpenTelemetry telemetry support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Telemetry switch decisions
Cargo.toml, crates/mlog/Cargo.toml, crates/mlog/src/lib.rs, crates/mlog/src/otel/switches.rs
Dependencies and module wiring support environment parsing, exporter selection, endpoint precedence, header handling, and spool decisions.
Telemetry export wiring
crates/mlog/src/otel.rs
The module parses endpoints and headers, builds HTTP exporters, installs trace and log layers, aligns trace context, and provides bounded flush and shutdown operations.
Spool storage and lifecycle
crates/mlog/src/otel/spool.rs
The spool verifies directories, writes per-process files, rotates and prunes recognized files, and handles retries, partial writes, relocation, and release.
Span and log record serialization
crates/mlog/src/otel/spool.rs
Span and log processors serialize records as OTLP/JSON and append them to shared spool files. Tests cover encoding and parser edge cases.

Network test reliability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Listener retry observation
crates/minimald/src/net/listeners.rs
Listener tests use adjacent witness sockets and inclusive port policies to verify retry-streak reset and republishing.
Publication test port setup
crates/minimald/src/server.rs
Publication-walk tests construct server state before probing ports.
Presentation refusal handling
crates/minvmd/src/net/bep_stub.rs
The presentation helper treats a broken pipe during an early refusal as an empty response.

This change adds an opt-in telemetry export and local spool that nothing calls yet. Two small edge cases remain. A huge shutdown timeout can cause a panic. A spool that moves back to a directory it already used can let one file grow past its size limit. Both are bounded and easy to fix, and the change is mergeable with that follow-up.

Approved: no findings at 7eb31372a931.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log -- crates/mlog shows the touched files are all new; the only pre-existing lines changed are in lib.rs (pub mod otel;) and dependency manifests.

Review against spec 25 at eed80b0 (TEL-001 to TEL-020) and the user doc.

Summary:

  • The switches follow the spec. MINIMAL_TELEMETRY is the only opt-in, DO_NOT_TRACK with any value and OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true stop export and spool, and a value that is not UTF-8 never turns telemetry on.
  • The header rule (TEL-008) is correct. A MINIMAL_ endpoint never gets the plain headers, and the end-to-end test in the requirement-test PR uses the real exporter.
  • The spool is careful: 0600 files, a 0700 directory, a refused shared or foreign directory with a fallback, bounded pruning, torn-line recovery and back-off on a failed open.
  • The CLI exit flush is bounded as TEL-010 asks.

Findings:

  • Should fix: a plain per-signal endpoint wins over a MINIMAL_ base endpoint. Minimal's traces can go to a collector that the user set up for another program. The user doc says the opposite.
  • Should fix: the spool checks its directory once by path and then writes by path. If a parent directory is shared, another user can swap the directory after the check. Write through the checked directory descriptor.
  • Minor: the fallback for service.instance.id is not random.

Note: many verify: tests in spec 25 for this crate are in crates/mlog/tests/otel_requirements.rs, which comes with the requirement-test PR later in the stack. The in-crate tests here cover the same rules, so this is not a problem for this PR.

Review pass (read-only, head e2dda9f0). CodeRabbit's symlink item is fixed (O_NOFOLLOW, 0600, covered by a_symlink_at_a_spool_file_or_the_stamp_is_not_followed), and the foundry bot's missing-test reference is gone. Opt-in gating, the spool bounds, header stripping and origin-only endpoint logging all check out.

Still open at head — +1 to @norrietaylor's three threads:

  1. switches.rs:247 — the signal endpoint is chosen before the base one regardless of prefix, so a plain OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_TRACES_ENDPOINT beats MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT and Minimal's traces go to the ambient app's collector while logs go to Minimal's. docs/reference/telemetry.md:65 says a MINIMAL_ name always wins; code, TEL-004 and docs need to agree, with a test.
  2. spool.rs (check_private_dir, then path-based opens at 416/452/729) — the directory is verified via an fd and then reopened by path, so a writable non-sticky parent lets another user swap it for a symlink after the check. Keeping the dir fd and using openat/unlinkat closes it.
  3. otel.rs:417 — the /dev/urandom fallback (time XOR pid) isn't random; getrandom(2) works before /dev is mounted.

Nit: the PR body says "CI never exports", but a runner with MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1 does export.

Verified at cffd0c3: all three threads and the nit are fixed with tests asserting the exact cases (a_minimal_endpoint_beats_a_plain_signal_endpoint, a_directory_swapped_after_the_check_does_not_redirect_writes, the_instance_id_is_drawn_from_the_kernel); the openat/unlinkat code has no fd leaks. Resolving these from my side. One note: no CI has built this head (stacked base), so a green test run on cffd0c3 is the remaining pre-merge check.

Verdict APPROVE — No findings.

Three small test-only changes that the telemetry series relies on, kept
separate so they can land on their own:

- the walked-publication probe waits for the publication to settle
- bep_stub tolerates EPIPE when the client hangs up first
- the fresh-streak test waits for the streak counter to advance

No product code changes.
The telemetry core for every minimal process (spec 25 TEL-001 to TEL-020,
principles 1, 2, 7 and 8). Off unless MINIMAL_TELEMETRY=1; when off
nothing starts: no thread, no exporter, no file. When on:

- spans and logs leave over OTLP/HTTP (opentelemetry 0.33) to the endpoint
the MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_* variables name, base or per signal, and
the plain OTEL_* ones only when no MINIMAL_ endpoint is set; per-signal
  endpoints and `*_EXPORTER=none` are honoured;
- DO_NOT_TRACK (any non-empty value) and OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true always win;
- the exporter's own HTTP stack and the SDK never produce telemetry, errors
  never reach a console, and the exit flush is bounded (200 ms in the CLI);
- every finished span and log record is appended synchronously to an
  OTLP/JSON spool under <state>/telemetry/spool (0700/0600, 4 MiB segments,
pruned to 50 MiB / 7 days, torn lines contained), so a crash or SIGKILL
  keeps what was already written;
- the endpoint and the switches have one recognizer each (url::Url, a
byte-exact flag grammar), ambient OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS are refused
when the endpoint came from a MINIMAL_ variable, and secrets never appear
in the init summary or the logs.

The switch decision and the spool prune plan are pure functions with Kani
harnesses beside their unit tests.
