Review comments at @.github/workflows/ci-kani.yml:
- Line 76: Remove the added mlog filter from the ci-kani workflow and revert the
related workflow changes, leaving the workflow unchanged.
Review comments at @crates/minimal/src/diag/collect.rs:
- Around line 481-482: Update file selection in the collection flow around
`files.sort_by_key` and `files.truncate` to retain the newest files separately
for each spool producer, so one producer cannot consume another’s allowance. Add
a test with more than five files across producers that verifies the older CLI
file is included.
- Line 466: Update the directory-entry loop around entries.next_entry() to
handle Err separately from end-of-directory, and record the directory as
unreadable when iteration fails; preserve normal processing for entries and
exhaustion.
- Line 436: Update the bundle collector’s spool directory resolution at `let
dir` to honor `MINIMAL_OTEL_SPOOL_DIR` when set, falling back to
`paths.state/telemetry/spool` when unset so collection uses the active spool
location.
Review comments at @crates/minimald/src/diag.rs:
- Line 604: Update the `next_entry` loop in the spool collector to handle
listing errors explicitly: record a `(remainder)` skip entry with the error
reason, then stop scanning. Preserve normal processing for returned entries and
termination on `Ok(None)`, following the existing pattern in the `sessions`
collector.
Review comments at @crates/mlog/Cargo.toml:
- Line 26: Move the `opentelemetry-http` version and `default-features` setting
into the workspace `Cargo.toml` beside the other OpenTelemetry dependencies,
then update the `crates/mlog` dependency to inherit with `workspace = true`
while preserving its `reqwest-blocking` feature.
Review comments at @docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/architecture.md:
- Line 75: Update the `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS` row in the telemetry
architecture spec to distinguish header variables by endpoint: plain endpoints
use the plain OTEL header variables, while `MINIMAL_` endpoints use
`MINIMAL_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS`. Remove the claims that plain headers apply
to every chosen endpoint and that no `MINIMAL_` header variable exists.
Review comments at @scripts/kani.sh:
- Line 149: Update the KANI_MEM_MAX validation and digits handling in the
fallback path to normalize size digits as decimal or reject leading zeros before
shell arithmetic, so values such as 08G cannot trigger an octal arithmetic
error.

Review of the requirement tests and the Kani lanes (6/7).
Verdict: ready after one fix.
What I checked:
-
10BC8
Every test name on a
test:orverify:line of spec 25 exists at the top of this stack. The names that are not at this PR's head are the vsock tests and the guest forward tests, which come in 7/7. - The
expectcounts agree with the harnesses: mlog 9 (switches 6, spool 3), minvmd 5, sessions 10, rcache 3. The mlog and minvmd harnesses bound their loops withunwindand bound symbolic lengths withassume. - The header test sends
S3CRETin the ambient headers and checks that the collector never sees it at aMINIMAL_endpoint. It has a positive control for the plain endpoint. This is a good test of TEL-008. otel_without_ca_roots.rsruns on Linux. reqwest withrustlsreadsSSL_CERT_FILEandSSL_CERT_DIRthere, so the test is not skipped in CI.
Summary of the comments:
- Must fix: show that the minvmd Kani lane fits on the CI runner. The script records a run that used 302 GB.
- Should fix: the Kani path filter does not name mlog or minvmd.
- Should fix: TEL-047 is missing from
KNOWN_GAPS, and the spec's text about known-gap tests does not match what they do. - Minor: a fixed exit bound, and a broken doc comment.
The PR body is out of date. It says 8 files, +1896/−6 and 13 harnesses. The PR has 11 files, +2348/−8, and the lane now expects 14 harnesses for mlog and minvmd. It also says KANI_JOBS bounds the run, but the script has no KANI_JOBS. The script uses KANI_MEM_MAX.

…i lanes Integration tests pin spec 25's requirements end to end: opt-in and switches, the spool under SIGKILL and ENOSPC, rotation and prune, a silent or absent collector, trace adoption across the CLI/daemon boundary, the boot line's contents, the minvmd error status, and a URL-confusion corpus. scripts/kani.sh runs the mlog and minvmd harnesses under a memory cap.

NIT · tests · confidence 0.70 · in Daemon::start
Daemon::start strips OTEL_*, MINIMAL_*, DO_NOT_TRACK and RUST_LOG from the daemon's environment but not TRACEPARENT, while the other three harnesses in this PR (otel_cli.rs's run_min_env/run_min_tty, minvmd/tests/otel_integration.rs's minvmd, and otel_requirements.rs's child) all remove it. An ambient TRACEPARENT inherited from the shell would make the daemon's exported spans join a caller's trace. Neither test in this file asserts on trace id (they count conn-named spans and measure shutdown timing), so nothing observable breaks today, but the strip lists are inconsistent and the module doc claims ambient telemetry variables are removed.

Finding:
`Daemon::start` strips `OTEL_*`, `MINIMAL_*`, `DO_NOT_TRACK` and `RUST_LOG` from the daemon's environment but not `TRACEPARENT`, while the other three harnesses in this PR (`otel_cli.rs`'s `run_min_env`/`run_min_tty`, `minvmd/tests/otel_integration.rs`'s `minvmd`, and `otel_requirements.rs`'s `child`) all remove it. An ambient `TRACEPARENT` inherited from the shell would make the daemon's exported spans join a caller's trace. Neither test in this file asserts on trace id (they count `conn`-named spans and measure shutdown timing), so nothing observable breaks today, but the strip lists are inconsistent and the module doc claims ambient telemetry variables are removed.
First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

test(otel): requirement tests for mlog, min, minimald and minvmd; Kani lanes (6/7, spec 25)
Stack: spec #1988 → test hardening → mlog export → CLI+daemon → minvmd+guest → diag → this → guest telemetry over vsock (7/7). Base:
otel/5-diag.Tests only: the per-requirement tests named by spec 25's
test:lines that don't live inside the crates' own modules, and the Kani lanes — the switch decision (nothing_is_exported_without_the_opt_inand friends), the spool prune plan (prune_plan_one/two/three_files) and the boot-line budget are proof-backed (27 harnesses inscripts/kani.sh: sessions 10, rcache 3, mlog 9, minvmd 5, all VERIFIED). Measured per crate on the lab box with swap off: sessions 1060 s at 11.87 GB, rcache 31 s at 0.99 GB, mlog 47 s at 0.56 GB, minvmd 42 s at 1.67 GB warm (122 s, 5.55 GB cold). WithKANI_MEM_MAXunset, the runner now caps each crate at 14G (KANI_MEM_MAX=offdisables it); the whole lane passed 27/27 under that default in 1157 s at a 12.33 GB peak. How the whole stack was verified before it was opened (regression lab, Cloud Hypervisor clones, debian-12/13 and ubuntu-22.04/24.04):
main03f2cf1 (job 00244): fmt, clippy-D warnings, clippy-strict, 1906 tests at the tip;--lockedmetadata + tests + the spawn guard at each of the six commits;mainreproduces identically;main03f2cf1 vs this stack) on the nightly set, 3 rounds × 4 distros, 210 runs: 0 verdict changesoutside the upstream 710-series bugs (intermittent on both sides) and one base-side timeout (749 on ubuntu-22.04:
base hit the 10 s quiesce ceiling once; the branch passed 4/4). Three-round soak of the stack, 216 runs: the only
flaky cells are the upstream 643b/710-series; every OTel scenario stable across all rounds. (Numbers from the
re-cut carrying the review fixes; the earlier cut had the same shape.)
Coverage matrix (requirement → test / Kani / lab scenario) is in the spec PR thread.
Plan: #1992 (the spec's plan comment, and the round-4 plan update with task → test → file). The end-to-end join tasks in this PR:
a_traced_min_ls_lands_in_one_trace_and_in_the_spool(crates/minimal/tests/otel_cli.rs)exec_run_attach_and_task_run_share_the_commands_trace(crates/minimal/tests/otel_cli.rs)a_bundle_collected_with_telemetry_on_carries_no_secret(crates/minimal/src/diag/collect.rs)T15 (
a_boot_and_stop_share_one_trace_with_the_guest_daemon, a real VM) is in #2039, because the guest's spans reach the host only over vsock.Round 4 (head 340daf2 on 1293f25): every commit of the stack passes the per-commit gate and
--lockedmetadata; at the stack's tip fmt and every clippy variant are clean, nextest passes 2302/2302 and Kani 27/27; the T15 VM test passed 5/5 on the lab box.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
