tests: harden three flaky probes ahead of the telemetry series (1/7)

Stack: spec #1988 → this → mlog export → CLI+daemon → minvmd+guest → diag → requirement tests → guest telemetry over vsock (7/7). Base main 03f2cf1.

Test-only (3 files, +173/−58), no product code change. Four small changes the telemetry series' per-commit CI relies on, kept separate so they can land on their own:

  • the listener-range test binds a loopback range instead of a fixed port (a_loopback_bound_listener_is_not_published raced on the port when the whole workspace ran at once);
  • the walked-publication probe waits for the publication to settle;
  • bep_stub tolerates EPIPE when the client hangs up first;
  • the fresh-streak test waits for the streak counter to advance.

Found while gating the series in the regression lab (one flaky cell in 2006 test runs); commits 2–6 of the stack were gated with this in place.

Plan: #1992 (the spec's plan comment). Plan tasks in this PR: none — a test-only prerequisite outside the spec.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a reference guide to opt-in telemetry, including configuration, privacy, troubleshooting, and diagnostic bundles.
    • Added specifications for telemetry collection, export, local storage, and guest-to-host forwarding.
  • Tests
    • Improved coverage of network listener behavior and retry handling after a listener closes.
    • Made publication checks less sensitive to port availability.
    • Expanded refusal handling checks for connections closed before a response is received.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add telemetry specifications and reference material, update network-related tests and refusal handling, and revise the accepted vocabulary.

Changes: Telemetry documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Telemetry requirements and operating bounds
docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/25-spec-telemetry.md
Spec 25 defines telemetry switches, export and spool behavior, propagation, guest telemetry, shutdown bounds, privacy, security, and verification details.
Telemetry architecture and process boundaries
docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/architecture.md
The architecture document describes trace relationships and propagation, environment settings, process boundaries, and spool handling.
Guest telemetry forwarding design

The design note specifies guest-to-host vsock forwarding, input and queue limits, host forwarding, boot settings, shutdown timing, and failure behavior.
Telemetry reference and documentation links
docs/reference/telemetry.md, docs/reference/manifest.json, docs/specs/10-spec-diagnostics/10-spec-diagnostics.md

Network test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Listener fixtures and port-range policy
crates/minimald/src/net/listeners.rs
Listener tests add an adjacent any-address listener helper and an inclusive port-range policy helper.
Listener backoff test
crates/minimald/src/net/listeners.rs
The test uses a witness listener withdrawal to establish that polling observed both listeners close before checking retry behavior.
Publication test port probes
crates/minimald/src/server.rs
The proxy and answerer tests probe for ports after setting up test state and immediately before driver execution.
Broken-pipe response
crates/minvmd/src/net/bep_stub.rs
present returns an empty response when its write fails with BrokenPipe. Other write errors still panic.

Accepted vocabulary

The telemetry documents still disagree about when guest records may be retained and how configured header values are removed from diagnostic bundles. Resolve those privacy-related requirements before merging; the remaining wording and estimate corrections are localized.

Review of the test hardening (1/7). Ready to merge.

What I checked:

  • adjacent_listeners: the permit range now covers only the two ports that the test holds. The second bind fails while another listener that a forward can reach holds that port. This removes the race with sibling test processes. The watcher reads /proc, so the Linux bind rules apply.
  • a_backed_off_port_that_closes_starts_a_fresh_streak: the fixed 700 ms wait is replaced by a witness port. Its withdrawal line proves that the poll read the new table. This is a correct proof, not a longer wait.
  • server.rs: the free-port probe now runs after the state construction, so the window between the probe and the bind is short.
  • bep_stub.rs: a refusal at accept can close the socket before the write. A broken pipe on a Unix socket now reads as "nothing answered". This agrees with the read path.

No changes to production code. No findings.

Review pass (read-only, head bed0787b): looks good to approve.

  • The three flakes are fixed at the root, not by widening timeouts: adjacent_listeners holds both ports of the permit range, the backed-off-port test now waits on the unexpose and its "withdrew" line instead of sleeping 700 ms (the ordering holds under the current-thread runtime), and the BEP stub treats EPIPE as the refusal it is while still asserting the refusal audit.
  • Nit, already acknowledged in the code: the probe-and-release port pattern in server.rs (~3957, ~5200) narrows the TOCTOU window but cannot close it.

- Line 720: Update the TEL-044 bundle-scrubbing specification to define how
configured exporter-header values of 1–7 bytes are removed from OTLP attributes
and log bodies, or narrow its guarantee to match the scrub rule’s actual
coverage.
- Around line 545-546: Update the guest telemetry requirements so host spool
opt-out prevents guest records from being written to the host spool, and an
exporter set to `none` prevents both spooling and forwarding. Preserve spooling
for no-endpoint and plain headers-refusal cases when host spooling is enabled,
and specify that guest spool processors are installed only when
`MINIMAL_OTEL_SPOOL` is enabled. In
`docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/25-spec-telemetry.md` lines 545–546, update the
TEL-034 requirement; in `docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/guest-vsock.md` lines
105–109, update the append behavior; lines 121–124, distinguish host spool-off,
exporter `none`, and no-endpoint or headers-refusal outcomes; and lines 146–147,

Review comments at @docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/architecture.md:
- Around line 62-68: Clarify the paragraph beginning “A `min` whose telemetry
decision is off” to limit its explicit opt-out and no-`TRACEPARENT` rule to the
host CLI. Preserve the inherited `TRACEPARENT` behavior for an in-box `min`
without its own opt-in, consistent with the distinction in 25-spec-telemetry.md.

Review comments at @docs/specs/25-spec-telemetry/guest-vsock.md:
- Around line 146-148: Update the `MINIMAL_OTEL_FORWARD` behavior so it installs
a tracer and traces `guest.ready` only when the trace signal is enabled,
including honoring `MINIMAL_OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=none`; keep log forwarding
active independently of the trace signal.
- Around line 115-116: Clarify the valid range of the shared-spool estimate: it
applies only for 1 ≤ N ≤ 12. State that for N ≥ 13, the 4 MiB-per-VM bursts
alone exceed the 50 MiB spool assumption, so the estimate is invalid.
