fix(minvmd): reword refusal messages in plain language - #2171
norrietaylor merged 4 commits into
Conversation
The box and socket control refusals leaned on internal vocabulary (box rows, asks, gvproxy, provider directories). Reword the user-facing strings so a person operating a VM can tell what went wrong and what to do next, without changing behavior, exit codes, or how the client classifies each refusal. Wording-only change: no control flow, classification, or error-kind moves. Test assertions that pinned the old strings are updated to pin the new ones.

The exhaustion counts cover addresses a shutting-down box still holds, not only ones inside the reuse wait. A withdrawal can land with no box to remove. The switch-socket wait proves a failed connect, not a missing socket. The capacity classifier's comment no longer claims a prefix the control socket stopped adding.
The cap refusal says which of the four capped connection kinds is full, in plain words, and each test pins its own kind. A refused address allocation keeps a short plain prefix, so the reply reads whole whatever the answerer's reason says. The state-directory refusals name the fix, the exhaustion count handles the singular, and the port prompt refusal drops the thread.

Approved: no findings at Nothing to do. Clobber: none: |
An exhausted run with every address live said "0 were released but cannot be reused yet", a rule that did not apply. The clause is now written only when an address is resting, and the zero and plural forms are tested. Also: an unknown connection kind is echoed in the cap refusal instead of reading as a control connection, the network helper refusals name gvproxy, and the state directory refusal names the VM host daemon.

The control-socket and address refusals used internal vocabulary
("box rows", "asks", "gvproxy", "reuse quarantine") that a person
operating a VM could not act on. Reword the user-facing strings in
plain language — what went wrong and what to do next — with no
behavior, exit-code, or classification changes. Test pins that
asserted the old strings now assert the new ones.
Wording shared with the sibling PR
Two refusals report the same kind of fact, addresses in use against addresses released:
HandOutCountsincrates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs): "N of M box addresses are in use and K were released butcannot be reused yet (an address rests 300 s after its release); the next one frees in S s".
The "and K were released ..." clause is left out when K is 0.
crates/minvmd/src/net/answerer.rs.Both say "in use", "released" and "the next one frees in". This one says "cannot be reused yet"
where the sibling says "were just released", because the switch plan's count also covers an
address a box that is shutting down still holds after the 300 s have passed.
A refused address allocation is answered as "could not give the box an address: ". The
reasons themselves are reworded in the sibling PR.
Verification
just teston macOS arm64 (the repository's test recipe, nextest) — 1157 passed, 0 failed,21 skipped, including every test asserting the reworded messages. The 3 failures first reported
here came from a plain
cargo test --locked -p minvmd, which runs the tests as threads of oneprocess and so shares global tracing/env state; they do not occur under the recipe.
