The VM host daemon's DNS-service refusals spelled the failure in internal
vocabulary — hook ports, interim answerers, answerer services. This rewords
those refusal, release, and handover strings in plain language, in
place, with no behavior change: each string keeps the facts it already
reported (holder identity, port, remedy, resume window). The minzoned
release echoes name the control socket only when several are asked, so the
answers can be told apart, and name the remedies directly. The refusal a box
registration sees when the VM reaches no DNS service points at
min finalize-install --show and the daemon log.

The test pins follow the reworded strings. Tracing lines and the detail
strings scripts/session-e2e.sh greps are unchanged, as is the minimald
mirror; BOX_ADDRESSES_EXHAUSTED keeps its prefix and argument list.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check — clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings — clean
  • cargo test --locked -p minvmd — 500 passed, 3 failed; the 3 failures are
pre-existing harness races that reproduce identically on unmodified main
(verified by stashing the change and re-running): two tests both install a
global tracing subscriber under parallel scheduling, and one
    XDG_STATE_HOME test is overridden by a sibling test's first-set-wins
OnceLock state-dir override. Each passes in isolation; nextest (the
canonical CI runner, one process per test) does not hit them, and none
touch the reworded strings — every test covering those passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Port-conflict messages explain that a process is preventing Minimal’s DNS service from using the port and instruct operators to stop it before rerunning min finalize-install.
    • Messages about unavailable channels, address exhaustion, and handover clarify the running VM’s box-name service and its transfer to Minimal’s DNS service.
    • Refusal and unreadable-reply messages identify the Minimal VM daemon; unreadable replies include recovery commands.
    • Release confirmations no longer include the control-socket path.

…lies

The host daemon's DNS-service refusals and minzoned's release output
spelled the failure in internal vocabulary: hook ports, interim
answerers, answerer services. Reword the fourteen refusal, release and
handover strings in plain language, in place, with no behavior
change; each one keeps the facts it already reported. The tracing
lines and the detail strings scripts/session-e2e.sh greps are
unchanged, and the minimald mirror is untouched.

Five test pins follow the reworded strings; everything else in the
suite is byte-identical.

The Minimal VM daemon’s command and network answerers now use revised wording for release, handover, allocation, and error replies. Some messages provide updated recovery instructions. Related test expectations changed.

A rabbit reads the daemon’s reply,
Then hops where the box names fly.
The ports speak clear, the notes are neat,
With fresh commands for paws and feet.
DNS takes its turn in the spring,
While little carrots celebrate the wording.

@norrietaylor norrietaylor changed the title fix: reword the VM host daemon's DNS-service refusals and minzoned release output in plain language fix(minvmd): reword the DNS-service refusals and minzoned release output in plain language Oct 11, 2026
…eply

The release window ends only when the service's channel takes the node's
publish, so a service that started but whose handover failed still sees
the VM resume. Say so. Keep the free-the-port remedy on the listen
failure, and align the ReleaseReply doc with the reply no longer being
the logged sentence.

Approved: no findings at 4ea451876ee4.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log on both files shows only this PR's own incremental series (1d47aec → fcff8b1 → 4ea4518), no recent fix reverted.

…rvice refusals

The control sockets minzoned asks include a native daemon's, so the
refusal says "the Minimal daemon", not "VM daemon". With several control
sockets the release echoes name the socket again, so the answers can be
told apart. The no-DNS-service refusal gains a next step, and the release
and cancel replies are pinned by distinctive phrases.
