Swiss holiday, Roc et Neige Hotel, Chateau d'Oex,
The holiday was mostly well-organised and the places we visited were delightful. The hotel was pleasant and the rooms were small but comfortable, except that just about all of the people who joined it at the same time as us needed to request another pillow as only 1 thin pillow was supplied per person..
The food, however, was definitely underwhelming. More like school food than hotel food. There was never a choice (which to a point is OK if the food is good). There was inevitably a very ordinary starter and the main course was disappointing. Our first meal at the hotel (on the 3rd day) was a chicken leg, 6 small pieces of carrot and a baked potato with creme fraiche. The next night it was a plain piece of fish on top of rice with a few (possibly tinned or frozen) chopped square vegetables in it. We did not have any green vegetables except for the final night, when we had a few green beans.
Another cause of disappointment was on our first two nights, when we were expected to walk uphill to the village to find something to eat as the 'chef' was off. No guidance was given as to where we might eat and we discovered tht some of the restaurants were closed. After an exhausting flight that was delayed by at least two hours and difficulty in finding our holiday host at the airport as a result, coupled with the heat, this proved too much for my husband. He has heart trouble and actually collapsed on the way uphill. In the end he waited at the roadside while I shopped in the local supermarket and we took food back to eat at the hotel.
We have no complaints about the holiday host nor about the trips, which were well organised, but the food situation was dire and disappointing. Not what we expected to encounter at a good hotel.
