Description

H. C. JONES.
Improvement in Baskets.
Patented Aug 6,1872.
WITN'ESSES INVENTOR;
board-bottomed baskets UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE O. JONES, OF DOWAGIAO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.
SPECIFICATION. I, HORACE O. JONES, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Board-Bottomed Baskets, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to the construction of the object being to provide a more efficient method of fastening the uprights or staves to the board bottoms in baskets where a single disk is used in constructing the bottom.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification, and shows a vertical transverse section of a device embodying my invention.
The letters of reference marked thereon indicate the parts denoted by a similar letter in the written part of this specification, of which A represents a disk.- This disk is made of the usual diameter and thickness employed in constructing board-bottomed baskets when a single disk is used having a groove to receive the lower ends of the uprights; but, instead of the groove, I provide an annular rabbet in the under corner of the periphery of the disk, as seen at B. In the inner corner of this rabbet I provide a shallow groove, as shown at O. The object of this groove is to facilitate the process of constructing the basket, for, by inserting the ends of the stave in this groove, they will retain their position until they can be more securely fastened by applying the hoop D. This hoopis made to fit the annular shoulder of the rabbet B, and is sufficiently deep to project a little below the shoulder of the disk, forming a base, on which the basket will rest when in use, and is fastened in the rabbet by means of nails driven through the hoop and through the staves, and clinched in the projecting lip of the disk on the inner side of the basket. Now, it will be seen that this method of applying the hoop D will materially strengthen the disk A and render the use of the cleat commonly used on single disk-bottoms unnecessary.
I do not confine myself to any particular form of staves or uprights, but may use any of the forms in common use; but in constructing stave baskets having two series of overlapping staves in connection with this style of bottom I employ inside and outside middle hoops E F and the top hoops G H, with handles attached in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The single disk A having the annular rabbet B and groove 0, in combination with the hoop D, when constructed, arranged, and combined as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
HORACE (J. JONES.
