IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 37,845, dated April 15, 1873; application filed December 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE C.'JONES, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention relates to the construction of baskets of the class known as stave-baskets; and consists in the .peculiar arrangement of the staves whereby substantial advantages are obtained, as will be seen from the annexed specification.
The accompanying drawing making a part of this, shows a top view of a device embodying my invention, with letters of reference marked thereon, in which- A A represent the body of the basket. This I construct by placing each stave so as to overlap each succeeding stave, making but one series, each stave B forming a portion of the outer and a portion of the inner surface of the side of the basket. Now it willbe seen that if pressure be applied to the side of this basket, (when hooped in the usual manner of hoopin g stave baskets,) it will be resisted by all the staves in the series. Thus a strong where these staves cross the bottom the overlapping of so many staves at one point causes a degree of roughness.- To obviate this I employ the standards GO 0 O, by placing them across the bottom both inside and outside of the staves B, using a sufficient number to cover the rough parts of the bottom, and so crossing each other as to leave equal spaces between the outer ends. These staves also serve to brace and strengthen the sides of the basket, and several thicknesses of thcsestaves may be used, if desired.
