IMPROVEMENT m BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,135, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. I, HORACE G. JoNEs, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Baskets, of
which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of baskets known as double-stave baskets, and the object of my invention is to cheapen the expense of manufacturing stave baskets.
The accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, shows a vertical transverse section through the diameter of a basket an improvement; but in this arrangement I place the lining or short staves on the outer side of the long staves. The advantage of this arrangement will be obvious to all when it is considered that the best material is required on the outside of the basket, that being most exposed to wear and strain 5 and as these staves must be out parallel with the grain of the timber it is not as difficult to find good timber that will cut short staves, thus enabling the manufacturer to use timber that otherwise would be wasted or used on the inner side, where the best timber is not required. The outer series of staves extends from the top of the basket to near the center of the bottom, the lower ends of which are confined by means of the circular plate G. This plate is attached to the center of the basket bottom by means of the nails D, or otherwise substantially the same. -B represents an inside bottom hoop. E represents an outside bottom hoop. By means of these hoops the basket is held in position at the bottom, as is usual in stave baskets.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is Constructing a basket of two thicknesses, the inner thickness extending from the top of one side across the bottom to the top of the other side, and the outer thickness extending from the top of the basket to the bottom only, and confined at the lower end by the disk 0 and hoops B and E, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
