IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.

Specilication forming part of `Letters Patent No. 133,941, dated December 17, 1.872.

` provement in the Mode or Manner of Manufac-A turing Baskets of Staves or Splints; and the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had t'o the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification,

in which'- r' f Figure 1 represents the bottom portions of a basket in an upright position, and Fig. 2 represents a downward view of the inside of the basket, and showsthe arrangement of the inside series of staves.

This invention relates to anew and improved mode of constructing the bottoms of stave baskets, whereby they can be made with a smooth inside surface, while it at the same time servesk to strengthen the baskets and make them more durable, and also to lessen the labor and consequently the expense of their manufacture.

- .The following is a description of my said invention, and the letters here given refer to "like letters in the accompanying drawing.

A A refer to the inside series of overlapping staves;v B B, to the inside bottom hoop; C C,

to the central disk or cap; and D D, to the rivet, which is driventhrough said disk or cap and the bottom of the basket, and clinched on 'its under side.

Instead of using short overlapping staves, as above mentioned, I use those having sufficient'length to extend from the top of the basket down under the said bottom hoop, and thence to the center of the bottom of the basket, where they terminate.

To obviate the diicnlties experienced in setting up'baskets so constructed I taper my staves from the point where they pass under the said bottom hoop so that they terminate at a point and in the center of the bottom oi' the basket. This I accomplish by trimming` from one or both of their edges, as the occasion may require. The tapered ends are then secured in place by the disk C C and rivet D D.

Having thus described my invention, the claim I make, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a basket having an outer and an inner series of staves, so constructing the inner series that they shall overlap each other from the top down to or near the bottom hoop, and from said hoop tothe center of the bottom of the basket so trimming them that their edges shall join each other and form a smooth inner surface for the bottom of the basket, substantially as described.
