UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
HORACE O. JONES, OF DOVVAGIAO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAVE BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,419, dated July 13, 1875 5 application filed April 8, 1875.
CASE E.
To all whom it may cancer n:
Be it known that I, HORACE G. J oNEs, of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stave Baskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central transverse section, showing a portion of a stave basket with my improved bottom applied to it. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the disks with its hoop.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to the construction of that class of basket bottoms known as board bottoms.
The nature of my invention consists in encircling the disks which form the bottom with base-hoops, by which means the common board bottom is materially strengthened and improved.
My improved bottom for any description of basket is formed of the upper disk A and the lower disk B. Each of these disks I bind with a hoop, O C. These hoops bind the fibers of the wood together, and thus prevent splitting of the disks. The hoops are fastened to the disks by nails inserted through their periphery, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
In applying the hooped disks for forming the basket bottom they are set apart sufficiently to admit the ends of the staves or splints D between them, and when the ends 7 of the staves or splints are inserted they are confined by means of nails, as illustrated, or
in any other practical well-known manner of uniting two or more clamping-disks together 7 upon an intermediate object.
Nails may pass up through the hoops and staves or splints, and also through the disks and staves; or it may be sufficient to only pass the nails through the disks, or through the hoops of the disks when the hoops are permanently fastened to the disks.
I do not confine myself to any particular way of applying the nails, nor to any particular manner of laying the staves or splints to form the body of the basket. The disks may be placed, with respect to one another, so that the grain of the wood of one will cross the grain of the wood of the other, and thus aid the hoops in preventing the bottom from splitting.
The improved bottom above described will greatly increase the durability of board-bottom baskets which are subjected to rough usage.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stave basket, consisting of the staves D, passing between hoops O 0, one on the inner, the other on the outer, side, and disks A B, surrounded by said hoops, both hoops and disks being bolted together by rivets passing through the staves, and being also united by .nails driven laterally into each disk through its surrounding hoop, substantially as described.
