A good credit score can change lives, especially for important long-term goals like mortgages, car loans, or getting the best possible repayment plan on bigger purchases. Despite this, few alternatives for building credit exist. We’re here to change that.

Poor value and heavy-handed payment handling
I used BuildMyCreditScore for around two and a half years and paid the monthly subscription, but personally I saw very little real benefit from the product.
The app gives the impression of an improving credit score, but in my experience that seemed to reflect how my account looked within their own system rather than any meaningful improvement to my wider credit profile. I understand they may report account activity to credit reference agencies, but I did not feel the monthly fee was worth it for the limited benefit I saw.
The card itself also became frustrating to use. There were occasions where a Direct Debit collection did not work on the first attempt, the card was restricted, and I had to contact support because there did not appear to be a simple way in the app to manually pay or retry the amount. The payments were later recovered, and I was told they would not be reported as missed or late, but the process felt clunky and unnecessary.
I also found the payment warning emails very off-putting. A potential £35 late payment fee feels high, especially for a product aimed at people trying to build or improve their credit. The wording around further charges, debt collection, legal action and possible credit-file impact felt heavy-handed and intimidating, particularly when support responses can take time and customers may simply be trying to resolve a short-term issue.
My account was later closed after a manual review. Their initial closure email gave very little explanation and simply referred me to the terms and conditions. I had to raise a formal complaint and subject access request to get a clearer explanation. They ultimately said the closure was due to repeated unsuccessful Direct Debit collection attempts, even though the amounts were later recovered.
Compared with other credit-building products I’ve used, BuildMyCreditScore would be at the bottom for me. With other products, the benefit feels clearer, whether that is building a savings habit while reporting payments or offering more practical bill-support features. With BuildMyCreditScore, I felt I was mainly paying a monthly fee for a card and an in-app score display, without seeing enough real-world benefit to justify the cost.
To be fair, they did later confirm the account would be reported as closed/settled and not as missed or late. However, overall I found the product poor value, the credit-building benefit unclear, and the account/payment handling frustrating.
I’m honestly glad I’m no longer paying £7.95 a month for it.
Update: BuildMyCreditScore have replied with general comments about how the product is intended to work, but my review is based on my own experience. They had separately confirmed to me that the recovered retry payment would not be reported as missed or late and that the account would be reported as closed/settled.

What they don’t tell you when you sign up.
What they don’t tell you when you sign up for BuildMyCreditScore is that it’s best to make purchases in the middle of the month not towards the end or beginning – I only found this out when I subscribed to Experian. Using a quarter of your daily limit on three purchases at the end of the month can actually lower your Credit score as it increases card utilisation.
Once I learned this I adjusted my spending behaviour taking this in mind my score increased, however then I received an email from someone called Georgi Slavov asking me to upload personal details with what looked like a suspicious phishing link to verify my identity but our IDs and identity should be verified through Open Banking (it’s how we create the account in the first place).
When I asked for further details apparently I may be a “Politically Imposed Person” – I have no idea what this means and when I asked for details I was given the name of some political party in Crawley.
I then asked to close my account rather than providing ID but apparently I can’t do this without confirming my date of birth - this all sounds very suspicious and like an attempt to harvest my data outside of Open Banking.
When I mention that under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, I am entitled to a termination when a service is not provided with reasonable care or as described he stopped responding
To be clear I don’t actually want to close my account before a year has elapsed and would rather carry on but this all seems very odd and suspicious to me.
The link I was sent to apparently "verify" myself didn't have buildmycreditscore in name. If I was suitably assured this was a bona fide request I would look to retain my account.
I will ultimately raise this with the FCA and the Financial Ombudsman Service if not resolved to my satisfaction. I am a paying customer with legitimate concerns that are not being addressed.
-- Edit --
I've upped the rating to two stars as I've had contact and am now satisfied the link is bona fide, I'll update further based on what happens next.

DONT
My personal experience with this company is they do not care about you as a customer all they are interested in is taking your money and then will tell you lies to stop any refunds.
I never received my card but paid twice then after emails with this company I was told they will not be giving me any refund but when you start to tell them the law they soon think twice.
Even though my account has now been closed they have decided to report to my credit file incorrect information which I have now opened a case.
If you do some research before signing up you can find other companies that offer the same service with better reviews

Impossible to cancel!
I paid for the annual subscription which was nearly £80.
It gives you a card that you can spend up to £30 a day on, if you have that money on your account.
This card has not improved my credit rating over the year I've had it.
The worst thing is now I want to cancel the card, I cannot get it done. There's no phone number, you send an email, get a stock response from a 'customer service' agent asking for you to send further info, but the return email bounces back. I have tried send all the info they need in one email, but still get the same stock reply. I have cancelled the direct debit to stop the next annual fee going out. But if this bounces it will negatively effect my score, which is the opposite of why I have taken the card out!
A disaster of a company, stick with more well known ones!

Easy and nice
AVOID!!!
I signed up hoping to increase my credit score, the app shows regular increases, which don't reflect on any other credit score apps charging £9.95, from august 2025, then I noticed they were taking £13.95 in Oct/Nov without informing me of any increase to the subscription cost. I rarely used the card as it was so I cancelled the subscription. I informed them via email to which they didn't respond. They took a further 9.95 from my bank so I cancelled the direct debit, explaining to their customer services team who take up to a week to reply. They have now deducted the 60 points I had gained from my credit score and marked a default on my credit reports. Its a useless scam

One of the Most Chaotic and Incompetent Services I’ve Ever Dealt With
In my personal opinion, Build My Credit Score has been an absolute disaster to deal with. I have never encountered a company so disorganised, confused, and incapable of handling even the simplest request.
Throughout my experience, I was handed from one agent to another, each giving me completely different information. It honestly felt like nobody had any idea what the previous person had done. The level of internal confusion was unbelievable — as if the left hand had no idea what the right hand was doing.
I was even given written confirmation that my account would be closed automatically once my refund was completed. Months later? I was suddenly told something else entirely. To me, this shows a shocking lack of professionalism and reliability. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch a company contradict its own statements.
Even worse, unpaid payment entries appeared on my credit file — something that should never have happened. In my view, this is the result of their internal mess, and dealing with the fallout has been stressful, slow and frankly exhausting. Instead of helping me build my credit score, they created more problems than they solved.
Overall, my experience has been overwhelmingly negative. Build My Credit Score needs serious internal restructuring, better communication practices, and a much higher level of competence if they want to operate a service that directly affects people’s credit history.
I would strongly advise others to think twice before trusting them with something as important as their credit record.

Not worth it
Literally impossible to get urgent support.t card got stolen somehow before I could even relieve it in my letter box, as I got notifications of declined transactions at a nearby town when I was at home. I even contacted one of the merchants and confirmed someone had come in to make a payment and their card got declined. The live chat was useless as nobody was responding other than a bot, there is no direct number, and we all know emails can take time. Meanwhile my own personal bank account is connected to this and there was no way of disconnecting it. Literally rather not even build my credit,

Avoid
I cancelled immediately after signing up and confirmed by email that i cancelled, yet you issue a card for me and tell me to activate it. I made it clear that I would not be paying for our service as I cancelled immediately and never used it. Yet you send me a card and tell me you'll report me the the credit reference agencies, if I don't pay. Absolutely terrible company. Avoid at all costs.
*Update for my response.... I did reply!!!!! Absolutely shameless company. I cancelled immediately after signing up and confirmed by email when asked, if I wanted to cancel. This company are very very underhand!

Matter Resolved with Professional…
I had an outstanding balance with BuildMyCreditScore, and while the repayment process had its tense moments, I appreciate that the matter has now been resolved professionally.
Nikita from the support team was courteous, clear, and respectful in handling the closure. The remaining balance was written off as agreed, and the account has been fully closed with no further charges applied.
Though I would have preferred more flexibility in the early communication phase, I recognise the company has policies to follow. I'm grateful that they honoured our agreement and confirmed that my credit file would reflect a settled balance of £0.00.
Overall, I appreciate the professionalism shown throughout the process. Thank you.
