Thanks. I also emailed TitanTV and got back that they are not interested... didn't get a response from the top though. :) I'm pretty confident *someone* will be willing to take this on. We're probably talking thousands of potential (paying) customers. One of the financial issues is the high suspected cost of a raw data feed from Tribune makes it hard for a stand-alone project to break even (much less make a profit!) The good news is the marginal costs are much more reasonable, so teaming up with a company that already pays the base fee should be profitable (for them). I had a short e-mail conversation with Jack Perry CEO of Decisionmark, the owner of TitanTV.com. I asked him if they'd be willing to look at this situation, but he pointed out that the listings are a minor part of their future plans and so improving or adding features is not a priority. I can forward you the email if you're interested. -Ian --- Robert Eden <rm...@ya...> wrote: > On 6/19 Tribune Media announced that they will be discontinuing their > Zap2IT Labs service on September 1, 2007. > > XMLTV/tv_grab_na_dd uses this for U.S./Canada guide data. > > I'd like to start by publicly saying Tribune and Zap2IT for their > guide > data all these years. On 6/19 Tribune Media announced that they will be discontinuing their
Zap2IT Labs service on September 1, 2007.
XMLTV/tv_grab_na_dd uses this for U.S./Canada guide data.
I'd like to start by publicly saying Tribune and Zap2IT for their guide
data all these years. It was very much appreciated.
Tribune has said they have no interest in converting Z2L to a paid
service even though many people have expressed a willingness to pay.
This doesn't only effect XMLTV, it effects MythTV, GBPVR, and many more
applications that use U.S./Canada listings. I'm confident the Open
Source Community will work out a solution, there is no need to panic.
I've had conversations with developers on other projects and we are all
trying to solicit another source of data without resorting to web
scraping. I can't guarantee the data will be free (or surveyware), but
I do hope it will be reasonably priced.
I've set up a private mailing list for leaders of open source projects
to work together on this issue. If you are a leader of a Open Source
project that uses TV listings, drop me an email to be added to the
list. (include your project name for verification please). Working
together we can come up with a solution.
If you have TV data with redistribution rights and are willing to work
with XMLTV or other Open Source projects, please drop me an email so we
can discuss it. I'll pass it on.

do you really use a local proxy server? It's unusual to have the proxy server on the same system. What happens if you remove the HHTP_PROXY* environment variables? Hi, Thank you to everybody that has already signed up to the "Free TV Listings" petition which is due to close on 29th June (this month). If you are a UK resident that supports the idea then you can sign up now at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Free-TV-listings/ Since there is less than a month to go and we require a further 60 signatures to hit the 200 required for a consideration from Number 10, I would like to give it a run on Digg to as to reach a wide audience: http://digg.com/hardware/Sign_my_petition_Free_UK_TV_Listings If you are into such things then please Digg It! This will be my last posting regarding this topic unless we hit 200 signatures and receive an official response from the Prime Minster's office, in which case I will post it here. Thanks for the continued patience of those for whom this is not directly relevant.
