G. P. HUMPHREY NECKTIE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 19. 1917.
L m fiwu Patented. Jan. 22, 1918.
WIN/E88 l/VVE/V TOR A rum/v5 m GEORGE P. HUMPHREY, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
NECKTIE-HOLDEEt.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan... 22, rare.
Application filed January 19, 1917. Serial No. 143,232.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gronon P. HUM- rHnEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New Rochelle, county of lVestchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Holders of which. the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Necktie holders by which a four-in-hand necktieor scarf can be tied readily with.
such shape as suits the wearer and by which the necktie or scarf can be applied and detached readily, while enjoying increasing popularity, are open to the objection that the holder itself is free to move vertically along the collar button so that the tie is apt to become displaced from its intended position in the collar. The present invention has for its object to provide a holder which, while of any desired and known character, carries or has formed integral therewith, means for maintaining the ho der in fixed relation to the collar and button so that the tie cannot become displaced. In the preferred and simplest form of the invention. theretaining means are formed as a flange integral with the holder and adapted to engage the lower edge of the collar after the holder is attached to the button so as to prevent the holder from moving ver tically with relation to the collar and button. The characteristics of the invention will appear more clearly hereinafter in connection with the detailed description of the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment. In the dra win rs-- Figure 1 is a front view of a holder with a tie, secured in proper position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View l'l section, taken along the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. l and lookin in the direction of the arrows.
Fin. 8 is a front view of the holder.
Fig. 4 is a side view thereof.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed views of the button for the holder.
While the invention is not to be limited to the precise character of the holder since it is believed to be new to provide means for securing the holder against vertical movement when in position. there has been illustrated herein one simple type of holder which lends itself conveniently to the application thereto of the improved form. of retainer. This holder a may be stamped out of a single piece of metal and provided with a cross bar a over which the tie may pass in a manner understood, and in the holder is stamped out a vertical slot a having a circular enlargement a at its end to receive the head 6 of the collar button 6, the width of the slot a being: such as to receive snugly the neck 6 of this collar button. Broadly, the present invention resides in the application of a retainer to the holder whereby vertical movement of the holder in the collar is prevented. In the illustrated embodiment. this retainer is formed as a flange a turned up integral with the holder at the lower end thereof. This flange is so spaced with relation to the collar button 6 that when the holder a is in use (Figs. 1 and 2) the flange will rest under and engage the lower edge of the collar 0. Obviously, with the parts in the position illustrated and the flange of in engagement with the lower edge of the collar vertical displacement of the holder and tie is positively prevented. Further. the engagement of the head 7) of the collar button with the outer face of the holder is such as to prevent the flange (2 from springingout of engagement with the lower edge of the co lar until the holder is removed by turning" the head 7) with its narrow edge in line w th the slot at in the holder. By this peculiar coiiperation it is assured that the holder cannot become dis" placed or the flange (1 be iostled out of no sition. since the collar button acts as a loelr to prevent lateral movement of the holder.
As indicated hereinbefore, the invention is not to be limited to the particular type of ho der so long as the retaining element therefor is carried therewith and. as a subcomhination. so long as the improved cooperat on between the Collar button and the retain ng device is provided.
l claim as my invention:
1. in c mbination with a scarf holder having a body portion provided with a slot, a collar button to enter the slot. and pro vided with an enlarged head to engage the holder and prevent lateral movement there of. and a retainer carried by the ho der to engage the lower edge of the collar and prevent vertical movement of. the holder with relation to the collan the retainer he llll lltlfi Jllllo a collar button to enter the slot and pro-' vided with an enlarged head to engage the holder and prevent lateral movement there of, and a flange formed integral with the body portion at the lower edge thereof to engage the lower edge of the collar and prevent vertical movement of the holder with relation to the collar, tl1e flange being held against disengagement with the collar by V the locklng engagement of the button with the holder. 7
