LEBE- nncnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Retainers; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to necktie retainers and has particular. reference to that type of such devices employed in attaching the shield of a bow or four-in-hand tie to a collar button.

As its principal object this invention contemplates the construction of a retainer of the character above described formed from a single blank of sheet metal, and designed with such regard to proportion, number and arrangement of parts that it may be cheaply manufactured and will be durable and elficient in its operation.

A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a retainer equipped with means for holding the shield against vertical as well as horizontal shifting when attached to the collar button.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.

`With reference to the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the preferred form of the retainer is formed, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the retainer illustrated in its assembled position on a collar button, Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred form of my invention, its several parts in assembled position, Fig. 4 is a modified form of the attaching strip.

Proceeding now to the description of the drawings, the preferred embodiment of this invention includes the body portion of the retainer designated as an entirety in Fig. 1 by the numeral 1. The body portion 1 is substantially oblong in shape and carries on one longitudinal edge a laterally extending tongue 2 preferably rounded at its terminals as at 3, and provided with a button head receiving aperture 4. From each end edge 5 of the body portion 1 and from a point approximately central thereof, extends a locking tongue G. This, in the preferred forni, is reduced in breadth toward its free end to produce a point 7 for the obvious purpose of facilitating the insertion of the locking tongues in the shield of the tie. This body portion 1 is further provided-with an elongated .slot 8 extending inwardlv of the blank from the longitudinal edge 9 and formed in a lateral projection therefrom. In folding the various portions of the blank 1 to produce the assembled struct-ure illustrated in Fig. 2, the body portion is bent adjacent each terminal on the lines 10 and 11, producing the side walls 12 and 13 illustrated in Fig. 4. The locking tongues 6 are bent to eX- tend at right angles to the plane of the side walls. The tongue 2 is bent on the line of its junction with the edge of the body portion 1 and lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the blank, being disposed in this position with the aperture 4 in registration with the inner terminal of the slot 8. A modification of the locking tongues in the preferred form of retainer is illustrated in Fig. 3, in which one of the tongues is provided with an opening 2O adapted to receive the terminal portion of the tongue 21, which member is bent to engage the base of the tongue, thus holding the retainer firmly on the shield 22.

As regards the method of applying the retainer to a collar button, reference is had to Fig. 2 in which it will be seen that the retainer is mounted on the button 23 by sliding the blank 1 on the shank of the button bringing the shank portion in the inner end of the slot 8. As the retainer is placed on the shank of the button the head 24 rst engages the free end of the tongue 2, subsequently passing into the opening 4, when the shank has reached the inner terminal of the slot 8. A. portion of the head 24 of the collar button is received by the opening'4 in the tongue 2, which opening is circular and which has a diameter smaller than the largest diameter of the head 24, the wall of the opening engaging the head, and the tongue 2 clamps the head 24 between itself and the inner side of the rear Wall l, and in view thereof, the shield is held against horizontal and vertical shifting.

In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above desoription, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent With the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as'dened in the appended claim.

What I claim is:

A necktie retainer constructed from a single blank, said blank being bent to form a vertical rear Wall and side Walls, said rear n wall provided centrally with a button 'shank receiving slot opening out through its lower edge, neoktie engaging prongs formed centrally on the longitudinal edges oi the side walls and directed in opposite directions, a

tongue formed on the upper edge of the rear Wall, said tongue bent inwardly and downwardly and located between the side walls, said inwardly directed portion of the tongue holding the upper portion of the same at a spaced distance from the inner face of the rear wall, said tongue being provided with a circular opening and adapted to engage the head of a button, when the shank of which is iitted in the slot thereby preventing accidental movement of the same.
