Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 421 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently encountered unexpected extra fees, local taxes, and high costs at the desk that were never properly disclosed during the initial booking process. Customers also struggled to obtain refunds when travel plans went wrong, often facing unhelpful communication and very rigid cancellation policies from support. Some reviewers were happy with their overall experience, noting that certain partner rental companies provided good service and decent vehicles. These consumers appreciated smooth vehicle pickups and felt fully confident continuing to use the booking platform for all their future travel needs.

Paid for a rental car we never received

Extremely disappointing experience with both Wiber and Rentalcars.

We booked and prepaid a rental car through Rentalcars, with Wiber as the actual car rental company. The car was scheduled for collection at 8:00 AM.

We knew in advance that we would be delayed, so we did the right thing and contacted Wiber by email to let them know that we would arrive later.

Despite this, Wiber decided to cancel our reservation.

When we eventually arrived, the vehicle category we had reserved and paid for was no longer available. We were instead offered a different vehicle, but only if we paid an additional amount for an upgrade.

We did not accept this. We already had a paid reservation and had informed Wiber in advance that we would be delayed. In the end, we had no choice but to leave without a rental car.

This also meant that we incurred taxi expenses travelling to and from Wiber – without getting the car we had actually reserved.

What is most frustrating is that we had genuinely tried to do the right thing by contacting Wiber in advance. Nevertheless, our reservation was cancelled, and by the time we arrived, the vehicle we had reserved was no longer available.

After this experience, we find it very difficult to trust that a confirmed reservation with Wiber actually means that the vehicle you have paid for will be available to you.

A very disappointing way to handle a customer and certainly not the level of service we would expect from a professional car rental company.
1 star – Paid for a rental car we never received

Extremely disappointing experience with both Wiber and Rentalcars.

We booked and prepaid a rental car through Rentalcars, with Wiber as the actual car rental company. The car was scheduled for collection at 8:00 AM.

We realised in advance that we would be delayed, and we contacted Wiber by email before the scheduled collection time to inform them that we would arrive later. We therefore did not simply fail to show up without notice.

Despite this, Wiber cancelled our reservation.

When we eventually arrived, we were told that the vehicle category we had originally booked was no longer available. We were offered another vehicle, but only if we paid extra for an upgrade. We did not accept this and ultimately had to leave without a rental car.

The most frustrating part is what happened afterwards.

We had booked and paid for the car through Rentalcars, yet despite the fact that Wiber had cancelled the reservation and we never received the rental car, Rentalcars has refused to refund our money.

So we have ended up in the situation where we have paid for a rental car that we never received.

On top of that, we incurred taxi costs travelling to and from Wiber as a direct consequence of the situation.

We find this completely unacceptable. As a customer, it should not be our responsibility to bear the financial loss when the rental company cancels a confirmed reservation after we have notified them in advance of our delayed arrival.

We expected Rentalcars to assist us and protect us as the booking intermediary. Instead, we have been left without the car, without our money, and with additional taxi expenses.

A very disappointing customer experience from both Wiber and Rentalcars. We will certainly think twice before using either company again and cannot recommend them based on how this situation has been handled.

Appalling treatment when things go wrong!

I used Rentalcars.com (through Booking.com) to hire a 7 seater car through Enterprise in London. The day before picking the car up, Enterprise contacted me to say they did not have the car I paid for and offered me a smaller car from the lower category. The Enterprise employee confirmed that he could not give me a refund for the cheaper car as made the booking through Rentalcars.com. He advised that upon returning the car I should contact Booking.com for a refund. Unsurprising Booking.com rejected the claim hands down putting the blame on me, saying that I should contacted them at the time and give them the opportunity to do something about it, something unrealistic and completely impractical. Imagine having a problem in the middle of the night picking a car up at an airport with family and young kids, the last thing anyone will think of doing is calling Booking.com. Enterprise said they would have refunded me if I had booked with them. I am appalled by the way they treated a repeat customer. You just lost my custom for ever. I would rather pay more than give Booking.com my money ever again.

Real price more expensive than the offer on Rentalcars

When I rented the car, my credit card (with my name on it) that had been used many times before was refused by the rental company. Despite the fact that I had already a full insurance (bought also through Rentalcars), the rental company forced be to buy another one (so that I could use my debit card :) ). That changed the rental price by over 300%. Rentalcars told me that I should have called them - it was a Saturday and on their website it is clearly stated that their contact phone works Mon-Fri and not on the weekends.
They have washed their hands from everything saying that it is my problem if I bought this additional insurance. I did not buy it voluntarily, but was forced to do it.
It is clear that the good prices showed by them when you rent the car have nothing to do with reality.
I can confirm what other are saying - you will be very surprised when you get the price from the rental car company since it will be a lot more expensive than what you are offered when you reserve a car on Rentalcars.com. They do not control what happens and you will be left on your own to fight with the rental company. That makes me wonder what their service is really about?

Don´t trust what they offer

We made a booking through their website but the details in the offer were not finalized in the booking, for example an additional driver. It was impossible for me as a customer to see how, when you accept an offer with details, it does not end up in what was actually offered. So in the end we had to pay for things that we thought we had booked already. When contacting the customer service and providing information, we were accused of not providing right images, images that could me manipulated, although it clearly stated the date of the offer etc. A very bad - and expensive - experience.

Very dated vehicle, inadequate hygiene conditions and an open complaint

I booked a car through Rentalcars.com for 11 days in Crete, advertised as a Volkswagen Polo or similar, for a total rental price of €334.31.

At collection, through Caldera Car Hire / Europrent, I was provided with a Renault Clio showing 68,376 km, which appeared to belong to a significantly older version of the Clio IV. I fully understand that “or similar” does not guarantee a specific make or model. The issue is not that I received a Renault instead of a Volkswagen, but the overall quality and condition of the vehicle actually supplied.

The most serious issue concerned the hygiene of the interior, which we found dusty and inadequately cleaned. During the rental period, several members of my family repeatedly developed itchy red skin lesions consistent with insect bites, which we documented with photographs, to the point that we had to purchase an antihistamine treatment.

The problem was not immediately apparent at the time of collection. By the time the first reactions appeared, we had already driven for around two hours through Crete and initially had no way of understanding what was causing them. We only began to suspect a possible connection with the vehicle after the episodes repeatedly occurred over the following days.

In addition, I paid €180 at the rental desk for Super Collision Damage Waiver, and the member of staff justified the price by referring to the category of the vehicle. I have therefore formally requested clarification regarding both the actual age and classification of the car and the criteria used to determine that additional charge.

At the time of returning the vehicle, I personally expressed my dissatisfaction to the staff member present. I subsequently submitted a formal complaint to Rentalcars.com, Caldera and Europrent, requesting a partial refund and a detailed response to the issues raised.

The total cost of the rental and additional protection was €514.31. For that amount, I believe it is entirely reasonable to expect a vehicle in significantly better overall condition and, above all, with proper hygiene standards.

I will update this review based on the response and solution provided by Rentalcars.com and the rental company

False extra charging for 'Road Use'

False extra charging for 'Road Use'
£13.50 GBP charged after rental to use the road.

Not stated at the booking stage.

Customer services falsely claim, 'Because it’s a mandatory government‑imposed charge, it cannot be refunded or removed from the booking.'

This is nonsense and not charged by any other car hire company.

What a scammers

What a scammers really, could not get my rental car at all as the car was not equiped with the right insurance to travel on cruises around the Greek Islands, Green Motion agreed to cancel it with full refund, and had to book a new car triple the amount paid ( as last minute booking from Hertz, which was amazing btw). Now to claim my refund from Rentalcars the refused my claim. ( from Santorini to Ios Island and back ) .
What a scammers.

Steer clear of this company

Steer clear of this company, I went to Gran Canaria booked with this company, going through passport control on Gran Canaria side 2.5 hours, advised to ring a number if running late tried the number no answer on either the number provided or another one I found online, got to the office shut at 23.00 got there at 23.05, luckily still had the transfer to the hotel by jet2, rung the next day to ask if it would be ok to get a taxi to the airport to pick the car up told the car is no longer available so asked for a refund told to refer to the terms and conditions that basically I don’t get a refund in the end discussed with manager and eventually got a partial refund of 4 days rental back through no fault of my own and followed their terms and conditions by trying to ring the number provided, so car cost me £240 and only got £150 back and no car

Do NOT buy Booking/Rentalcars "Full Protection" - It's a scam!

I booked a car in Greece through Booking.com / Rentalcars.com and paid extra for their "Full Protection" policy to ensure peace of mind for our family. Our parked car was hit by a driver who took 100% responsibility. I had to pay €384 out of pocket to AutoUnion, trusting the insurance would reimburse me quickly.

I submitted all documents (police details, receipts, photos) on June 8th. The claims team officially replied: "we are not missing any documentation." Yet, they refuse to refund my money! They claim they are waiting for the Greek insurance companies to settle. Why did I buy independent insurance from Booking if I have to wait for third-party international settlements? Now, over a month later, they are completely ghosting my emails. A terrible product and horrific customer service. Avoid at all costs and buy local insurance instead!

Beware of extra fees if hiring in USA got price for vehicle hire then got charged nearly $500 more at the end of the rental for airport fee because I collected from airport and one way fee because I dropped at a different airport.
Rentals cars knew I was picking up and dropping off at 2 locations but still failed to put this in the costs.
Used Expedia in the past no issues like this

Avoid Rentalcars.com - waste of time. Go direct to the rental company

Renting a car through Rentalcars.com looked like good value. They sold me a rental for a BMW 5-series - required as we had 5 adults for a long journey. When I got to the rental desk I was offered a Ford Focus as an equivalent car. I had to pay extra to upgrade to a Peugeot 5008. The problem seems to be that the rental company's definition of what constitutes an equivalent car differs from that of Rentalcars.com. Don't waste your time with this crowd. They're just another complication in the process and not willing to stand over what they're selling. Also their customer service was terrible - just a lot of stock responses. I will not be using them again.

Booked through Rentalcars — ended up with Record Go nightmare, no support

We booked a rental car through Rentalcars (booking reference 754375058) for Barcelona El Prat Airport on 24 June 2026. The car was assigned to Record Go.

Upon arrival, Record Go's terminal had a technical failure and we were made to wait almost 5 hours — with two young children, late at night. The vehicle was handed over with no representative present and no damage inspection conducted.

The security deposit and fuel deposit totalling €1,910 were fully charged to our card. The vehicle was returned on 6 July in perfect condition with a full tank, confirmed by Record Go. It is now 20 August and we have not received a penny back.

When we contacted Rentalcars for support, their representative confirmed they act only as an intermediary and cannot intervene in charges made directly by Record Go. Fair enough legally — but as a platform that profits from connecting customers with suppliers, having zero accountability for who you recommend is not good enough.

Rentalcars should either vet their partners more carefully or provide meaningful support when things go wrong. Instead, we were left completely alone to chase a company that has now ignored us for two months.

Use a platform that actually stands behind its partners.

Extremely concerning handling of a…

Extremely concerning handling of a prepaid rental and subsequent complaint

I booked a 10-day car rental through Rentalcars.com for Kraków Airport and prepaid AED 3,668.11.

I arrived late to the rental desk following a prolonged immigration delay. I accept that the supplier's terms contained a 59-minute grace period, so my complaint is not about pretending that this condition did not exist.

My concern is what happened afterwards.

I contacted Rentalcars.com from the rental counter. Rentalcars.com has since acknowledged in writing that I contacted them on the day of collection, and their representatives have also confirmed in writing that there was an option to cancel the reservation subject to a three-day rental cancellation fee, with the remainder refunded.

During my approximately eight-minute call, I was asking for a full refund and objecting to losing money. The call became repetitive and was disconnected. I did not knowingly agree to forfeit the entire prepaid amount.

Nobody called me back.

Nobody emailed me after the call to confirm what had supposedly been agreed.

I was not sent a written warning saying that if I did not accept the three-day deduction during that call, I would lose the entire 10-day payment.

Rentalcars.com subsequently cancelled the booking and charged a cancellation fee of AED 3,668.11 — the entire amount I had prepaid — with AED 0 refunded.

What concerns me most is the explanation that followed.

After multiple exchanges with different customer-service representatives, Rentalcars.com eventually stated that their internal records indicate that I had declined the three-day refund option and had supposedly later “confirmed” that cancellation would result in the complete loss of my prepaid amount.

I categorically dispute that account.

I have therefore formally asked Rentalcars.com to produce the call recording and contemporaneous notes showing where I supposedly agreed to surrender the entire AED 3,668.11.

I have also asked them several straightforward questions that I believe any customer in this position would be entitled to have answered:

• What exact contractual provision governed the three-day cancellation charge?

• If a three-day cancellation option applied when I contacted them from the rental counter, why was I ultimately charged for all ten days?

• What amount would actually have been refunded under the three-day option?

• Was the booked vehicle or an equivalent actually available at the scheduled collection time?

• When exactly was the reservation cancelled and the vehicle released back into inventory?

• Was the vehicle or equivalent capacity subsequently rented to somebody else during my intended 10-day rental period?

• What financial loss did Rentalcars.com or the underlying rental company actually suffer that justified retaining the entire prepaid amount?

• Why was there no callback or written confirmation before imposing a 100% cancellation charge?

So far, dealing with this has involved repeated correspondence with different representatives, inconsistent explanations, and escalation through several channels rather than a straightforward investigation of the central issue.

I have now submitted:

- a formal Customer Relations complaint;
- a separate complaint concerning the handling of the original telephone call;
- a Subject Access Request requesting preservation and disclosure of the call recording and internal notes;
- a complaint directly to the underlying rental company, Flex To Go;
- a card transaction dispute with my bank; and
- reports to relevant UK consumer-protection authorities.

I am posting this because other customers should understand the potential consequences of a late airport collection and, more importantly, should know how important it is to document every telephone conversation, take screenshots, and insist that any cancellation or refund proposal is confirmed in writing before ending a call.

My dispute is ongoing and I will update this review when Rentalcars.com provides its final response and, in particular, when it provides the evidence supporting its assertion that I knowingly agreed to lose the entire prepaid amount.

At present, based on my experience, I would be extremely reluctant to prepay a substantial rental amount through Rentalcars.com again.

Regarding the INDY Airport branch:

Regarding the INDY Airport branch:

If I could give a 0 star I would. I input my age at 24 a day in advance to reserve get a truck. I had a hour and a half drive. I was patient in line, WHICH WAS 2+ HOURS of wait time. I get up there and they said because of your age we cannot let you rent a truck. I wasted 3.5 hours, plus the time to plan this, plus the driving time. They have wasted time of my life that I will not get back. This company. I told them to figure out how to cancel my insurance I pre bought with them, when I was talking to the kiosk member he said “don’t depend on us to do anything.” That was the most true words I’ve heard all day. This company is HORRIBLE. Other individuals in line mentioned how for months this has been the case every time they are here. I know for a fact that other individuals waited 4+ hours in front of me. No one is accountable because it is someone else’s fault. Do better.

They charged extra for a vehicle described as the company having a desk in the airport terminal. Arrived at our destination and there were no rental companies in the airport. When I tried to get an explanation from rentalcars.com they ran me through the AI gauntlet of unacceptable customer care until I gave up trying to make an enquiry. Don't trust this company.

Truly awful customer service.

Truly awful customer service from Rentalcars.com. I reserved a vehicle for collection at 12pm the following day. When I arrived at the counter the rental agent apologised saying that the vehicle had been returned with damage from the previous rental and that no cars were available. This was hugely inconvenient. Here's the staggering part. Rentalcars.com have told me there is no refund because I didn't inform them if their own suppliers failure while I was at the desk. I contacted them using their own support channel within 1 hour of getting on a train with family and luggage. Unbelievable. I was a customer for more than 10 years. Never again!

Hidden credit card requirement

Booked a car rental. All the information said the company accepts debit OR credit cards. So did the emails I received. Went to pick the car up, was told in no uncertain terms that only credit cards are valid.
At least Rentalcars customer support agreed to cancel the booking and refund me completely - that's why it's 2 stars and not 1. I still got stranded at an airport.

Payment method taken by RentalCars but not by car provider, 250+ un-refunded.

I booked a car via this website with an Amex and went to pick it up to find out that the rental car company don't accept Amex or any alternative Debit Card. Only Visa and Mastercard.

When speaking to this websites customer service they were completely unhelpful with the situation, mentioning I should have called while at the pickup desk. While the rental company offered only one solution calling RentalCars for a refund. I'm honestly so disappointed with this experience I'm a loyal booking.com customer and I'm completely shocked by the lack goodwill, in a scenario that was pretty misleading on RentalCars part.
