Hi Jennifer, owner Jaimee here replying personally. I’d love to clear up a few misconceptions about our ingredients. Cooki is absolutely a better-for-you, low-tox haircare brand stocked in hundreds of health stores, but we don’t claim that every ingredient in our products is “100% natural”. As someone who is passionately low-tox, I’m particularly conscious of the ingredients in the products I use every day, which is one of the reasons I’m so thoughtful about our ingredients and formulations. For me it’s been about finding a balance between more natural formulations plus product efficacy, so that we are removing unnecessary nasties while also creating a range that gives people the same foamy, satisfying cleanse they’re used to.
Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS) is a coconut-derived cleansing ingredient commonly used in shampoos, facial cleansers and other personal care products, including many natural and health-store ranges. It’s an effective surfactant that helps remove excess oil and product buildup while producing the rich, bubbly lather our customers love.
While SCS is derived from coconut oil and then chemically processed, this doesn’t automatically make it harmful. It has been independently assessed as safe for cosmetic use, which is why it’s often spotted in the health aisle. Like any cleansing ingredient, it may not suit every scalp, but it simply isn’t accurate to suggest that it inevitably damages hair or causes irritation.
We’re completely transparent about our ingredients and list them in full on our website. We also offer a fully sulfate-free Rice Water Protein shampoo bar with an SCI base for customers who prefer to avoid sulfates altogether, which for example is a popular choice for those who have keratin-treated hair. All Cooki products are free from phthalates, parabens, PEGs, silicones, phenoxyethanol, gluten and synthetic fragrance.
We understand that everyone has different ingredient preferences, and we’re always happy to answer questions at hello@cookihaircare.com.
Thanks,
Jaimee
