LOUIS GRANER, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.
coAT'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,200, datedbctober'19,1897.
Application filed August 2A, 1897.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, LOUIS GRANER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Garments, of which the following is a specification and description.
The object of this invention is to provide a garment the front of whichcis so adjustable that the same, while presenting the appearance of a collar, either standing or lying down, will afford at the same time a complete protection for the neck and chest of the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent the said garment with the collar thereon in various apparentpositions. Fig. 4 represents the back of the neck of the garment. Fig. 5 represents the front thereof when not worn.
Similarletters refer to correspondingparts in the various figures.
K represents a garment of which A is th K on the line M N, Fig. 4:, on the lines 0 P and Q B, Fig. 5, said collar A consisting of the neck part S, side pieces J J, the neck part S being fastened along the lines M N, and said side pieces J J being fastened along the lines 0 P and Q R. B represents revers fastened to the bodyL of the garment K, under the line M N. O is a strap fastened to said collar A by the buttons F and G. H is a button on one side of said collar A, to which said strap 0 can be attached, as shown in Fig. 2. The collar A is so cut that the edges, when it is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1, will meet. I I represent the sleeves of the coat. As a result of this arrangement, when it is desired the coat can be worn, as shown in Fig. 3, with the collar A turned down. \Vhen so worn, the strap or fastener 0 should be fastened to the buttons F and G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, so'as not to be visible. WVhen it is desired to afford protection to the chest only, the collar A can be raised and folded, as shown in Fig. 2, and the-strap O can be fastened to the button H, as shown in Fig. 2.
To protect the throat, said collar A can be Serial No. 649,291. (No model.)
raised altogether tocoverthe neck, as shown in Fig. 1, when the edges T will meet and said strap 0 can be fastened, as shown in Fig. 2.
In this way it will be seen that the collar A can be worn either closed at the throat or partly open, andatthe same time a garment be provided which will appear dressy when either the throat or chest protecting features of the garment or both are in use. It will also. be seen that in this way independent action is secured to the. collar A, while the revers B are not interfered with,
Of course I donot limit myself to the precise construction here shown, but desire to be understood as claiming all mechanical equivalents of the device here shown.
What I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. A coat comprising in its construction a body portion proper having revers or lapels,
and a foldable collar having downwardly-pro- "jecting extensions which are attached to the body portion proper inside of and below the upper edge of the revers or lapels, the collar being adapted to be turned up and its edges brought together in front without affecting the set or position of the revers or lapels, sub stantially as described. R
2. A coat comprising in its construction a body portion proper having revers or lapels, and a-foldable collar disconnected from the revers or lapels and having downwardly-projecting extensions which are attached to the body portion of the coat inside of and for a considerable distance below theupper edge of the revers or lapels to reinforce the coat at this point, the collar being so constructed and arranged that it can be turned up and its edges brought together in front, above and below the upper edges of the revers or lapels, without affecting the set or position of the latter, substantially as described.
