HERBERT C. 'ROUTERY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO E. J3.v MYERS AND KATE IVI. MYERS, BOTH F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA;
COMBINATION ATHLETIC SUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Apr. 11, 1911.
applicati@ filed January 6, 1909. serial-No. 471,013.
To all whom 'it may concern; Be it known that I, HERBERT C. RoU'rnRr,
l a subject of the King 'ofV the United Kingf doin of Great Britain and Ireland,-residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and Sta-te of California, have invented a 'new and useful Combination Athletic Suit, of
which the followingis a` specification.
This invention relates to combination athletic suits for ladies, being adapted for use as a bathingsuit, basket ball suit and gymx nasium suit, -and one of the main objects of the-mvention 1 s to 'so construct' the opening 'at the-upper part of thesuit'. that the wearer may step into the suit through theupper part, and yetwhen the suit is on the person the opening at the 'upper part will only extend down a slight distance, so that should the suitbecome unfastened at the neck the,
front piece; cannot open far enough to unduly expose theperson;
Another object of theinvention is to provide for adjusting the size` of the'waistjof thegarment at thewaist'band to permit the same to be expanded to a considerableextent suiiioient to permit it to pass the hips of the wearer in putting on the garment or in taking the garment off.
I prefer to make' the garment in one .pie-ce` so that-the skirtl will' always beheld in substant-ially the proper relative position and .thus b e prevented from entangling and pre. venting 'the free act-ion ofthelimbsin swimmin'g." 4 In oneI form of thep'resent invention the skirtxdoes'not extend entirely around,but
only extendsin front, the rear .portion being formedf .by the bloomers. v
` The aeconipa' ying drawings illustrate the invention, pand referring thereto- Figure 1 vis a front leleva-tion of my 1mproved combinationathletic suit as worn,
with one corner of the-front piece unbiit- `toned'to show the length of the 'opening at the top; also thewaistband is -unbuttoned at "one end V to lillustrate the adjustability the1 7eof,' and the loweredge of the skirt is 'raised to 'reveal' thevbloomers behind. Fig. '2 is a rear view of thecomplete 's uit. Fig. 3
is an enlarged cross -section on li'ner:r8v
Fig-2.' Fig; 4 is a vertical `section through the lower portion of the nether portion 'or bloomes. Fi 5 is a sidevew of the suit. Fig. 6- is a sie view" of the nether portio or blooniers showing the gusset.
l designates the waist portion having short sleeves 2. ,The waist in front has two slits 3 extending down from the top a short` distance. The entire front part ot' the' garvment'consists of a single-flap t. the top ot which'is formed as a flap 5 which is nnati tached for a short distance at the upper-'part of the waist portion 1 to form the slits Buttons 6- are provided for each corner for securing 'the flap A. waist band 7 extends around the back portion and around part of the iront,'wlii-l` a front waist band section 8 is served tothe front flap 4. The waist band l in -front is provided with buttons orother fasteixeis 9 -spaced apart, andthe front band 8 is provided .with a similar fastening device 10 for securing to the 'fasteners 9, thereby 'per mitting the ,waist of 'the garment to be ad justed to thevwaist size or expanded to large sized opening to permit' thejgarm'ent' to pass the. hips of the wearer in putting it on or in removing it. The flap 4 .overlaps the waist portiongl s o that considerable fullness is '.ajl'ordednot only attlie bust but also allowingth'e garment to go over the hips.4 The `Vnet'her portionot` the garment in the present embodiment 'comprises a pair 'of Abl'oon'iers sewed to the garment at the waistlinehaving two legs 10, which, as shown in Fig. 2, form'the back of thev lower'part of the garmentand givethe. appearance of a 'skirt'at the back, while as' shownin Figs. 1""
'and 3 a'skirt portion 1].-- covers4 the front of the' bloomers, each edge 'of the skirt 11A belngfsewed at 12 along the outerfside ofeach bloomer leg to form a tuck which gives the appearance of a, continuous skirt.
A s Vshown in4 Fig. 4, the lower portion of each blomer has an' elastic band4 13 which fits above the knee of the wearer so that the bloomer is held slightly above the lower edge of the skirt, ,and thus the skirt 'hides the-A 'i tht O bloolners do not slip up and the skirt is held by the bloonlers; at the saine time full freedom of movement is permitted as there `is no skirt around the 'back of the bloonicrs,
the two legs of the latter being free from each other, and there being sufficient fullness in the skirt at the front to permit the required movement of the legs.
The fastening devices 9 and 10 permit of enlarging or reducing the size of the Waist as required, andthese fastening devices may b e of any desired construction such as buttons, snap fasteners or the like. At the throat the upper part of the flap 4 can only expose but a slight portion of the neckv should it become unfastened, Whereas in suits as heretofore constructed the opening Sextended from the neck to below the Waist. In thepresent construction this Opening at the top Is theonly opening inI the suit, except at the sleeves' and bloomers..
A combination athletic suit 'comprising a single piece garment form'ed of Waist, blo'ornersa'nd a-- skirt portion, the skirt por- 'tion covering the front of the bloorners only `-and the Aedges ofthe skirt being seived along the-iside seamsof the bloomers, the front portion-cf the Waist and Skirt comprising'a Hap slit fromthe Waist at the top, and .fas teniiig devices for securing the flap' to the upper Dart of 'the Waist.
'2 A- combination athletic suit comprising a single piece garment formed of' Waist,-
. 3. In a combination athletic suit compris-- ing 'a waist and a neth'er portion, the front part thereof comprising a flap :tree at the "top, fastening devices for securing the iap to the upper part of the Waist, and a. Waist band comprising :i front section and a rear section with' fastening devices for detachably Vfastening the two sections of the Waist bend Atogether to permit the latter to be ad justed to th .fize of the' waist or expanded to a large-sized opening to pass the hips f the wearer'.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, Califoi'nia, this 29th day of December, 1908.
