NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LENA SITTIG, OF BROOKLYN ,NEW YORK.
SKIP-(TED TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,601, dated Januaryl, 1895.
Application filed September 26, 1394:- Serial No. 5241 (No 111011913 To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LENA SITTIG, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skirted Trousers, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in skirted trousers in which a pair of trousers is so combined with a skirt that the wearer will present the appearance of havinga gracefully hanging skirt and will, at the same time, be protected in case of ridinga bicycle, climbing ladders, or walking in a strong wind, against exposure, and the legs of the wearer will be free to bend, as in riding the bicycle or walking, without hinderance from the skirt.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 represents a front view of the skirted trousers, showing the parts in the position which they assume when adjusted on the person.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the front flap of the skirt turned down and showing, in dotted lines, the trousers extended, and Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation, showing the front portion of the skirt removed and the trousers with one leg extended and the other turned up and secured beneath the kneeof the wearer.
The skirt is denoted by A' and is secured to the waist band B. The skirt is divided from the band downwardly a short distance on each side, as shown at a and a,'lea'ving a front flap a which may be turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2, for purposes of adjusting the skirted trousers for wear. The flap a is provided with a band a atits top and with suitable fastening devices a at its corners for the purpose of securing it to the band B when turned up in the position shown in Fig. 1. The front flap a may further be conveniently, provided with a side.
pocket a as shown in Fig. l.
Trouser legs 0, G are permanently secured to the same band B from which the skirt A hangs, by stitching or other suitable fastening means, the said trouser legs being separated at the crotch from at or near the band at the back to the band at the front and provided with some suitable fastening devices, such for example as buttons 0, at intervals for uniting them. The trouser legs at their lower ends are gathered by an elastic band 0' to cause them to fit the lower leg and to hold them in a turned up position,after the manner of Turkish trousers, by slipping the elastic band 0' up to a position under the knee.
The trouser legs are preferably sewed along their outer edges to the skirt A fromthe waist band down to a point where the flap d is united with the skirt, for the purpose of making the upper portion of the trousers hang smoothly within the skirt and below this point they are further fastened at or about opposite the knee portions by buttons, hooks or other suitable fastenings D, D, while the lower ends of the trouser legs may be connected with the skirt by separable fastening devices d, 01' near the bottom of the skirt for the purpose of preventing the skirt from flying up in windy weather when the trouserlegs are in their downwardly extended position.
In connecting the trouser legs with the band and skirt,I prefer to lap the upper portions of the skirt over the upper portions of the trouser legs, as shown at E, E and the openings in the sides of the skirt near the flap a are fastened to the band and will permit the hand to pass through the skirt and into such, pocket or pockets as may be provided in the upper portion of the trousers.
The garmentmay be adjusted to the wearer by simply loosening the front flap a and unbuttoning one or more of the buttons 0 at and below the band B at the front and, after slipping the legs through the trousers, again buttoning the band and fastening the front flap to the band.
The article is very simple and graceful in external appearance and serves as a perfect protection for the limbs and body of the wearer in riding and walking and may be adjusted and removed with great facility.
What I claim is- A skirted trousers, comprising a skirt, trouserswithin the skirt and permanently secured t0 the skirt at the top and hip portions and separable fastenings for securing the skirt to the trouser legs at the lower portions thereof, substantially as set forth.
