AUBREY G. SARTIN, OF SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA.
MATCH-HOLDER.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUBREY G. SARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Pedro. in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to match holders adapted to be applied to articles of apparel and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a match holder of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which includes means for securely retaining the matches and means for striking the matches.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the match holder.
Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of my improved match holder.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which my match holder is made.
The match holder comprises a plate 1 of sheet metal having a pin 2 attached to the back thereof whereby the plate may be secured upon an article of apparel. Sprmg pressed clips 3 are hingedly mounted upon the upper portion of the plate 1 and are adapted to retain a strip of roughened material 4 upon which safety matches may be struck. Below the strip 4 the plate 1 is provided with a roughened surface 5 upon which ordinary matches may be struck.
The plate 1 is provided at its side edges and in the vicinity of its lower edge with angularly disposed flanges 6. The plate 1 is provided at its lower edge with spaced fiat portions 7. The portions 7 are resllient and are curved so that they are bowed outwardly from the plate. The flaps 7 are provided at their upper ends with angularly disposed tongues 8 which stand out from the plate 1.
The matches, indicated at 9, may be slipped along the tongues 8 and between the flaps 7 and the outer surface of the plate 1 and the flanges 6 will restrain the matches 9 against longitudinal movement under the flaps 7.-
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted 1 15 1921 Application filed August 16, 1918.
Serial No. 250,170.
When it is desired to remove a match from the holder the intermediate portion of the match is grasped between the fingers which are inserted through the space between the inner edges of the flaps 7 and the particular match grasped is withdrawn from between the flaps 7 and the plate 1. The match may then be struck upon the surface 5 or the strip 4.. Inasmuch as the clips 3 arehingedly connected with the plate 1 the said clips may be swung outwardly to remove the strip 4 and a new strip may be substituted instead.
From the foregoing description taken'in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a match holder of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same will effectually retain the matches and may be conveniently carried upon an article of apparel whereby the matches are readily accessible when desired.
The plate 1 is provided at its upper edge with hook portions lO'adapted to be engaged over the edge of a pocket whereby the holder may be supported upon the pocket patch of a garment.
& designates a strip of sand paper or other abrasive substance that is arranged between the strip 4 and thevplate 1.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A. match holder comprising a plate of re silient material, a pair of spaced ears formed on the side edges of said plate and bent toward each other to extend at right angles to the plate, said ears being semicircular in shape, one end portion of said plate having a cut-out portion with its inner edge coincident with a line drawn transversely of the plate at the lower edges of the ears, said out out portion defining lugs said lugs being bent toward the plate and engaging the oute edges of the ears with the terminals of the lugs rebent to extend away from the plate, said lugs when bent cooperating with the ears to form a receptacle for the reception of a plurality of matches.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
