Oct..15, 1929. c. T. RASCHICK CHECK HOLDER AND CUTTER Filed March 50. 1921 r W mw. r mw NW W W [T w y @3 Patented that. 15, 1.9.2.9
TENT @FFTQE CHARLES '1. RASCHICK, 015 $1. PAUL, MINNESOTA CHECK HOLDER- AND CUTTER Application filed March 30, 1921.
My invention relates to check holders and cutters and has for its object to provide a check holder adapted to hold one or more books of checks with their edges projecting toward the person of the user so that the checks may be removed from the same by tearing the checks outwardly from the side of the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cutter adapted to be positioned on the top of the holder so as to cover the edges of the checks contained within the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for engaging a number of pads of checks between the leaves thereof for holding the same on the holder, said means being formed out of the metal of said holder.
A still further object is to form the holder so that the check pads may be easily inserted into or removed from the same.
in carrying out my objects I provide a sup porting plate on which is formed a loop mem her to be used in securing the holder to the person of the user. This supporting member is provided with pairs of inwardly turned ears adapted to engage in between the leaves of the pads of checks and has an upwardly turned body member from which extends a flange, having corresponding ears adapted to engage the pad of checks on the opposite sides thereof. Said last named flange is provided with a cutter.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my invention taken from the open side of the holder.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device taken on line 3+3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of my invention.
In the drawings I have shown body member 10 the whole length of the device which is formed on its upper side with a flange member 12, issuing at right angles therefrom Serial No. 457,088.
and of uniform width throughout but constructed slightly shorter in length than said body portion. On the bottom of body portion 10 the same is provided with a narrow flange 13 at the central port-ion thereof and two projecting supporting members 14: and 15 are connected with said flange 13 and positioned at the ends of the holder, as will be clearly seen in the figures. The entire holder is open at its ends so that one or more pads of checks may be inserted between the flange member 1.2 on one side of the holder and supporting members 1-1 and 15 and flange 13 on the other side of the holder against the body member 10 thereof.
For holding flrmly the pads of checks in place on the holder I provide a pair of inwardly turned ears 16 and 17 on the flange member 12 on the end thereof opposite supporting member 15. These ears are formed by severing portions of the metal of this flange from the top thereof and pressing said metal inwardly clearly indicated in Figure 3. On the opposite side of the device on en a Jortina' member 15 are formed similarl positioned projecting registering ears 18 and 19, ear 19 being cut out of the metal and turned inwardly similar to ear 1'? while the ear 18 is formed from an extended portion of supporting member 15 and merely bent over at right angles thereto. All of the cars 16, 17, 18 and 19 are preferably formed with their edges sharpened or reduced in thickness as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2 at 20. It can clearly be understood that when the device is detached from the person of the user and a pad of checks laid on the body member 10 and slid inwardly into the holder in engagement with the lowermost ears 17 and 19, the sharpened edges 20 will engage in be tween the leaves of the pad and become firmly embedded tl'ierein as the portion of the pad adjacent the staple for securing the leaves thereof together approaches the ears. When the pad of checks has been forced into the device a suflicient distance these ears serve to firmly hold the pad in place within the holder.
As will be noted in Figure 3 the ears 16 and 18 are positioned away from the top 22 ofthe 3ad of checks 21 so that the entire pad of checks 23 may be inserted into the holder and held in place therein in a manner similar ing the use of the device to pads of varied thicknesses the number of leaves of the upper pad inserted between 18 and 16 and the upper surface 22 of the lower pad 21 may be varied to meet the requirements so as to hold the pads properly positioned and secured within the holders. It can therefore be seen that variation in the thickness of the pads will not effect the-security of adjustment of the pads to the holder. I I I For adapting the check holder with the checks mountedthereon to the person of the user, I provide a looped extension 24 which is adapted to be hooked on a hook or attached to a chain or other fastening member for use in securingthe same to the person of the user. These devices being of common use are not shown in the drawings.
The member 24 is formed integral with and extends outwardly from the pad supporting member in the plane thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 4. In use the supporting members. 15 and 14 and the looped member 24 lie against. the surface of the person of the user so that the checks can normally hang downward with the edges thereof extending inwardly toward the user. In removing the checks the end of the holder adjacent supporting'member 14 is grasped by the hand and raised from the users person. In this position each used check may be swung outwardly from the pad to'which it is attached and torn therefrom with a movement extending from the front to the rear of the device. This is rendered possible since the supporting member15 is of such a size and shape that the downward end 25 thereof falls short of the line of perforation 26 of the respective check pads 23' and'21. It can clearly be seen that when any-of the checks are swung V outward the same are free from supporting member 14so no obstruction is encountered in the tearing of the same from the pad toward the supporting members 14 and 15.
-- "The cutter ofmy invention comprises a longitudinal tongue 27 struck out of the body flange mem'ber 12 and formed with a sharp edged pointed end 28. This tongue is raised from the body portion of tl eflange 12 and ,spaced therefrom. The end 28 of this tongue is adapted to engage a V shaped notch 29 formed inv an outwardly inclined portion 30 of the flange member 12 formed at the extreme end thereof. WVhen a check is inserted between the portion 30 and the cutting end 28 of tongue 27 and said tongue pressed inwardly a portion of the edge of said check is severed by shearing action from the remainder of said check, thus forming a notch at the edge of the check. To stiffen the bent up portion 30 of the device I provide two web members 31 and 32 formed by depressing the metal of the flange member 12 at either side of tongue 27 at the angle of connection of member 30 and said flange 12. These webs stiffen the connection between the member 30 and the flange 12 thereby insuring the proper position of the cutter 28 relative to notch 29 at all times.
To permit the easy removal of the check pads or stubs from the holder I remove a portion of the body member 10 at 33 adjacent to loop member 24 thereof by means of which the thumb may be inserted under the check pad and the same withdrawn from the holder. To get access to the last checks on the pad adjacent to body member 10 for removal of said checks I remove a portion of the other end of body member 10 at 34 so that said checks may be made accessible by the insertion of the forefinger to the side of the device. It is therefore clearly seen that the removal of the checks and check stubs from the holder is simple and efi'ective and that all of the checks are individually accessible for removal from the pads.
The advantages of my invention are inanifest. The checks are so positioned in the holder that a number of pads of checks may be placed within the same so that same will not protrude beyond the person of the user to an extent greater than the width of one pad of checks. At the same time the checks are so arranged that the same may be easily removed from the pads with a movement natural and convenient to the user of the checks, the cutter of the device being so arranged that a minimum amount of movement of the user is required in removing and notching the check. With this form of device check pads of varied thicknesses may be as equally and effectively attached to the holder as pads of the same thickness. lVhcn the user of the holder has a partly used check pad left over from a preceding day, which he does not wish to throw away and requires at least one new pad for immediate use. a new pad may be placed on the bottom of the holder and the partly used pad inserted on the top of the same. This eliminates the necessity of carrying about in the pocket of the users clothing the new check pad until the old one has been completely used up, thus saving time and greatly facilitating matters for the users of the checks.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of ill) which I now consider to represent the best.
