To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to check holders, and it comprises a plate or clip adapted to be arranged on the belt or other part of the clothing of the user, a holding member secured thereto, said holding member comprising a single piece of wire having its ends secured to said plate, the wire being coiled adjacent each end to form two spaced coils and being extended to form a loop, the end of said loop being arranged between said coils.

In the present invention, I have provided a device for holding miners checks, key rings, and similar articles which may be readily applied to a part of a garment of the user and a miners check or key ring readily attached thereto and removed therefrom.

The device comprises a plate shaped to form a sleeve adapted to be slidably mounted on a belt or other part of the clothing of the user. To this plate, there is attached a clip formed of a single piece of wire, in the form of a loop having an open portion near the top. The two ends of the wire are arranged to form coils spaced from each other, and positioned on each side of the opening of the loop, whereby accidental displacement of the miners check or key ring, arranged on the loop, is prevented. IVhen the miners check is to be removed, slight pressure is applied, suflicient to move the end of the wire loop outwardly from between the coils, and the wire is sufliciently resilient to spring back in place after the check has been removed.

shown, a'plate of any suitable material is bent to form a front portion 2, and a back portlon 3, adapted to be slidably mounted on the belt. The check holder is secured to the front of the plate and comprises a single piece of wire, the ends 1 of which are adapted to be secured to the plate by soldering, welding, or any other suitable manner. Adjacent the ends, the wire is coiled, as at 5, to form two spaced coils. (See Fig. 4.) Beyond the coil, the wire is extended along the plate, as at 6, and may be secured thereto in any suitable manner, the bottom of the wire being extended outwardly, as at 9, and arranged between the two coils. The two ends of the wire are connected at the upper end of the loop, which is spaced outwardly, as at 10, to be grasped by the finger of the operator in removing and replacing checks or key rings.

The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. In the drawings, there is indicated in dotted lines a miners check 11, having an opening 12. The check is to be retained on the clip or check holder to prevent accidental displacement thereof. By placing the opening 12 over the upper end 10 of the loop and applying slight pressure, the loop is moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings outwardly beyond the coils 5. The check is then allowed to assume the po sition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the resiliency of the wire is sufiicient to restore the loop to its normal position. shown in full lines in the drawings. The position of the portion 9 of the loop between the coils prevents displacement of the check until sufficient pressure is applied to move the upper end of the loop outwardly. It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a device of the character described, a supporting plate and a clip secured thereto, said clip being formed of a single piece of wire, the ends of the wire being secured to said plate, the wire being extended to form a coil adjacent each end, the coils being arranged at substantially right angles to the plate, extending outwardly therefrom and spaced from each other, the Wire beyond the coils being extended along the plate and secured thereto and the intermediate portion thereof being extended in a reverse direction, spaced from the plate to form a coil having an open portion, said open portion being normally arranged between said 10 spaced coils.
