Abstract

1286721 Recovering nickel from ores INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 31 March 1970 [28 March 1969] 15057/70 Heading C1A A process for the recovery of nickel from laterite ores containing nickel and iron comprises selectively reducing the ore in the temperature range 550-725‹ C. so as to reduce to metal a major part of the nickel, but only a minor part of the iron, then treating the reduced ore with carbon monoxide at at least two atmospheres pressure but at less than 80‹ C. to recover at least 75% of the reduced nickel as nickel carbonyl. The reduction may be carried out in a fluid bed or in a rotary furnace through which reducing gases are passed countercurrent to the ore and having two zones, a reducing zone where fuel is partially burnt in a deficiency of air so as to provide the required temperature and reducing atmosphere, and a pre-heating zone where the fuel is then completely burnt to heat the ore to at least 400‹ C. The combustion may be carried out by means of a series of mantle burners where the fuel is burnt with amounts of free oxygen-containing gases that diminish from the heating to the reducing zones. The combustion is preferably controlled so that the reducing potential is equivalent to a CO : CO 2 ratio of from 1 : 1 to 1 : 4 by volume. The nickel carbonyl formation may be catalysed by the addition of one or more of H 2 S, COS, SO 2 or pyrites either during or after the reduction operation in amounts of from 0À1 to 1% by weight of ore.
