Abstract

A process for the reduction of metal-bearing ores (e.g. iron ores) consists of passing particulated ore into a high temperature reactor wherein a gaseus or particulated fuel (e.g. fuel gas or fine coal dust) is burnt, producing a gas whose CO/CO2 ratio (preferably at least 5 : 1) is such that it is capable of reducing the ore to liquid metal by maintaining the temperature in the reactor above the melting-point of that metal (e.g. 1300 DEG to 1800 DEG C. for iron). The gas produced in the reactor is passed through a heat-exchanger, to a pre-reduction zone, and preferably further to a pre-heating zone, whereby the particulated ore is partially reduced (e.g. 30% to 80%) and pre-heated to a temperature below its agglomerating temperature (e.g. 750 DEG C. for iron ore); the CO/CO2 ratio of the gas leaving the pre-reduction zone is preferably up to 4 : 1. Fluidized beds, through which the gasses pass upwards, may be present in these zones. The method of introducing the ore, fuel and oxygen into the reactor may be by a central supply passage comprised of concentric tubes.
