Abstract
1338795 Reducing metal oxides INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 6 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 31733/71 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] A method of heating charges, which are subjected to an oxidizing or reducing atmosphere flowing through a conventional rotary film, comprises the introduction into the kiln of gases having no detrimental effect on the atmosphere at the point of introduction and at least 2400‹F. produced by the complete reaction of atomized liquid hydrocarbon and a gas containing uncombined oxygen in a side burner 49 (see Division F4] shown in greater detail in Fig.2, which comprises a refractory tube with a sharp change in its cross-section and sufficiently thick walls to maintain the interior surface incandescent in use. The method is particularly suitable for the reduction of heavy metal oxides (i.e. oxides of iron, nickel, copper, cobalt, and mixtures thereof) and for the selective reduction of nickel with only small amounts of iron from nickelferous oxides ores. The charge is introduced from a chute 38 and passed down the kiln against a flow of hot gas from a main burner 34 at the other end, first through a pre-heating zone and then through a reducing zone in which the side burner discharges its gas through a lateral outlet 66 in counter-current to the gas flow from the main burner. The side burner is fed with insufficient oxygen to ensure that its combustion products are reducing. A second similar side burner mounted in the pre-heating zone may be fed with excess oxygen which then reacts with the uncombusted fuel from the first side burner flowing from the reducing zone. The invention may also be applied to oxidizing treatments as well. A mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be added to the kiln at suitable points to provide the desired atmosphere.
