Abstract
1309725 Blackening iron articles NORTHERN METAL PRODUCTS Inc 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 20774/71 Heading C7U A method of blackening iron-containing articles comprises treating them in an oxidising zone at an elevated temperature with an oxidising gas comprising a gaseous product of air combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel, free oxygen, and steam. The gas contains at least ¢% by volume of oxygen, at least ¢% by volume of added steam, and 2-7% by volume of combustible gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The steam content is less than an amount which could cause condensation on the articles in the coolest portion of the zone. The elevated temperature is 1100-1200F., and the articles are cooled to less than 300F. before leaving the zone. Fig.1, shows articles 12 entering a furnace through stainless steel curtains 17ad, being heated by elements 19, treated by gas supplied through pipes 26, 28, and cooled in a cooling chamber 29.
