Abstract

1308959 Carburizing or carbonitriding steels UNION CARBIDE CORP 26 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 14638/70 Heading C7U A carbon steel article having a carbon content of 0À1-0À4% is case hardened by heating at a temperature of 1450-1750‹F in a carburizing atmosphere comprising a gaseous hydrocarbon, the atmosphere being contacted with a sooting inhibitor heated to at least 200‹F prior to or during exposure of the article to the atmosphere, the inhibitor comprising one or more of the elements Ba, Ca and Sr in the form of metal, alloy, oxide, hydronide or halide. The inhibitor may be dusted in finely divided form over the surface of the article or the atmosphere may be passed over a heated bed of the inhibitor prior to coming into contact with the article or the inhibitor may be incorporated in the walls of the furnace. The atmosphere may include 2-12% by volume of gaseous hydrocarbon such as methane, ethane, propane or natural gas, and may include a minor amount of ammonia for carbonitriding
