Documented Injury. Diagnosed as Obsession. Complaint Dismissed
I sought psychological support at Terveystalo for serious, long-standing trauma with multiple documented sources: a history of bullying and abusive treatment going back to childhood, a partially unnecessary surgical injury performed in 2004, and a surgeon who fabricated his international professional credentials and forged the post-operative report submitted to the insurance company. This is what Psychologist Marilla Palmén was dealing with. She never disclosed her therapeutic approach during sessions. Only after I filed a formal complaint did Terveystalo reveal she had been applying an ACT brief intervention framework — introduced retrospectively to justify inadequate notes, not disclosed to me as a patient.
At the final session — session three of three — Palmén labelled my symptoms as pakkoajatukset (compulsive/obsessive thoughts), an OCD-spectrum framing applied to documented medical trauma. This was clinically wrong. Prior Finnish clinicians had already correctly documented the same symptoms as depression and medical trauma — a trauma-spectrum presentation, not OCD. Palmén delivered this label at the last session with no opportunity to challenge it. When I pushed back, she was visibly offended. One year later, independent radiology at Terveystalo itself confirmed the physical findings she had dismissed as health anxiety. The somatic reality she labelled as obsession was imaging-confirmed by her own institution.
An OCD label in Kanta follows you to every subsequent clinician and shapes how they read your file — including your legitimate medical complaints. This is not a documentation error. It is a mislabelling with permanent clinical consequences.
Palmén then referred me to psychotherapist Susanna Pekki-Erikkilä at Terveystalo Kamppi for a 10-session trauma block. Pekki-Erikkilä was proactively engaged before session 2 — she emailed me unprompted to chase my booking. After session 2 — when she reviewed my full trauma history for the first time — she made no contact for ten months. Not one email. No closure. No onward referral. No notification to the referring doctor. Because she never formally closed the block, the KELA-funded long-term therapy the referring doctor had planned was never triggered. The harm did not stop at the wrong label — it continued through the referral chain Palmén initiated.
When I filed a formal complaint, a case handler called to discuss it. During that call I mentioned I had evidence that the surgeon who performed the original operation had fabricated his international professional credentials and falsified the post-operative report — directly relevant to understanding the legitimacy and severity of the trauma. I was told to send it. I did. The formal written response, signed by Antti Ormio, Lead Occupational Health Physician at Terveystalo Otaniemi, ignored this context entirely and focused only on defending Palmén's documentation practices. Conclusion: service "did not meet my expectations." Action taken: Palmén will explain her methods better next time.
Warnings: Record every appointment — notes may not reflect what was said. File complaints within 2 years — after that Valvira will not investigate. Evidence submitted during complaints may be completely ignored. Their language ("did not meet expectations", "different interpretations") is designed to admit nothing.
Public record: Roope Bob Tikkanen, Regional Medical Director at Terveystalo since 2011, whose research focused on violent behavior and impulsivity, murdered his wife in December 2022. Life sentence handed down by Helsinki District Court, upheld by the Court of Appeal. Reported by Yle. He held leadership at Terveystalo throughout.
