Valerie D. reposted thisValerie D. reposted thisThe subject of European competitiveness has been a consistent (and hotly debated) topic during my interactions with European Business Leaders and Policy Makers over the last 12 months. Thanks to the Business Post for giving me the opportunity to share my views on what Europe needs to do now to reaffirm our leadership position on the world stage. Some key callouts below, and a link to the article in full in the comments. The data is clear: The European economy is challenged because it’s getting less output from each hour worked, and a survey we ran shows that 45% of European business leaders believe the business climate is deteriorating, compared to just 11% in the US. Europe needs three critical changes to compete globally: ➡️Regulatory simplification: One example of this is the ongoing consultation on the 28th regime. Starting a business can take 3+ months in Germany, compared to just one day in the US. This provides a promising opportunity to deliver on an urgent demand from the startup ecosystem – a fast, digital pan-European entity incorporation that will allow founders to operate and scale seamlessly across the EU’s 27 markets. ➡️Better access to capital: While the US invests around 0.7% of GDP in high-growth firms, this figure is less than 0.3% in Europe. Europe needs to attract more capital and make access to EU funding easier. ➡️Increase access to talent: We need a pan-European tech visa with processing times measured in days, not months. Europe has shown it can reinvent itself before. Regulations like PSD2 enabled many global fintech businesses to operate across the entire EU, by being licensed in just one EU market, and my optimism for Europe remains strong. By moving decisively to foster investment, attract talent, and streamline regulation, Europe can unlock its immense potential and secure a leading role in the global economy for generations to come.

Stripe now powers 1.3% of the global GDP. ⭐ Conor McNamara, Stripe’s EMEA CRO, moderated a panel discussion with leaders from Ramp Network, SiteGround and Shoper. 🌍 Booksy shared learnings from scaling payments globally on Stripe. 📊 Finally, we showcased how Stripe Billing can help subscription businesses unlock growth. We were also excited to announce that Stripe Terminal is now available for users in Poland. With Stripe you can now build delightful omnichannel experiences for your customers. That's what attracted me to the role. In the time together here is what we got done: • Defined the function, built the KPIs and comp model, and hired the team from scratch • 3x ARR • 4x Enterprise go-lives • 5x Win Rate (with vs without a Solution Engineer) To my incredible team Eduardo Janicas, Marko Babić, Andreas Hanaekan, Syed Moosa Abbas and my partners in crime Aristotelis Lefas, Victoria Ivanhorodska, Sakshi Shukla, Kanan Binnatzada and Rana Hammad thank you for all the fun times and memories. Valerie D. liked thisValerie D. liked thisLayoffs will continue to happen. I don’t think any of us are naïve about that anymore. Businesses change, priorities shift, and sometimes that means people lose their jobs. But I do think we need to get better at how we do it. There’s a playbook now. The scripted call, the carefully approved words, the process designed to protect the business and move through a very human moment as efficiently as possible. I’ve spent a big part of my career in the talent world talking about culture, belonging and employee experience. I believed in those things then, and I still do. But having now experienced the other side of that conversation, I think we sometimes define employee experience too narrowly. It’s not just how you welcome people, develop them, recognize them or make them feel like they belong while they’re there. It’s also how you treat them when they’re no longer going to be. And in a world where we keep talking about the need to be more human at work, this feels like a pretty good place to start. How people leave is part of your culture too. Probably more than we like to admit.

We worked together from opposite sides of the table. A few years later, we ended up on the same side of the table at Stripe. Fast forward to 2026 and Jen's now at LinkedIn, I'm at Acquired, and here we are in San Diego still talking payments, partnerships and what's next. More than 10 years. Four different companies. Plenty has changed. But probably the best part of the story is this: - We started out as industry partners. - Then became colleagues. - And somewhere along the way, became friends. That's one of the things I love about this industry. The companies and roles change, but some of the relationships you build along the way stay with you.
