I filed a property tax protest and found Ownwell Inc. as the protesting agent. I did not request them. I called them and they said the co-owner signed a contract with them. By answering questions they provided to “see if they could lower our property taxes” turned into a contract on our house. I'm sure these scams are prevalent. I didn't receive a response from the county to my own protest, so I looked up the protest and saw these parasites on my own protest form. They said they will be sending me an invoice if my property value goes down. So, the info I’m providing to the county goes on their protest and then Ownwell will charge me for my own work. I spoke to them again and they admitted they get complaints from people who did not intend to enter a contract when gave their name and address. Their response, “we will be invoicing you if your property value goes down.”

The letter sent looked very official, however they comparables he sent would never be acceptable to a tax assessor. I have 35 years of experience in the real estate industry and this is just another example of companies trying to get a consumer to pay for something a realtor will do for free.

I started signing up with Ownwell to protest my property taxes. Halfway through, I wanted to think about it some more so I decided to cancel. There was no link on the sight to let you cancel once you start the application. I sent a message to the contact us link. The next day I got an email saying it's to late, we've already started working on your on your property taxes. Word of caution, PLEASE DO NOT start filling out the application if you're not completely sure that you want your taxes challenged. Once you put in your personal information there's no turning back.
