After almost a year with Direct Energy, I can honestly say this company kept me stressed out month after month. I DO NOT recommend them.

My electric bill was rarely, if ever, under $300, even though I am home alone most of the day and the other person in my household usually doesn’t get home until around 8 PM. I constantly tried to lower my usage. I unplugged things when they weren’t being used, opened the blinds instead of turning on lights, kept my thermostat steady based on the weather, and paid close attention to how much electricity I was using. Somehow, the bills stayed high or got even higher.

The most frustrating part was getting completely different information depending on who answered the phone.

I explained my lifestyle and usage to a supervisor, and he recommended putting me on a Free Nights plan. Based on what was explained to me, my bill should have been somewhere around $260 a month. Instead, my next bill was over $300.

I called back, and another representative told me the supervisor should NOT have put me on Free Nights and that Free Days would have been better for my lifestyle. So I trusted their advice AGAIN and changed plans.

This experience is as ongoing and stressful.

My bill then shot up to almost $500.

When I called back about that bill, I got yet another explanation about my kWh usage and charges. It became a constant cycle of calling Direct Energy, being told something different, changing something based on THEIR recommendations, and still ending up with an expensive bill.

I have recordings of four separate conversations because the information became so inconsistent that I felt I needed to document what I was being told.

What bothered me most was that every time I finally caught my account up, another unusually high bill seemed to follow. Even when I reduced my usage, I never felt like my bill reflected those efforts. Every time I changed plans because a Direct Energy representative or supervisor said another plan would save me money, the expected savings never seemed to materialize.

At some point, you start wondering what else you’re supposed to do when you’re unplugging things, watching your thermostat, limiting lights, monitoring your usage, AND following the company’s own advice, yet the bill keeps climbing.

Customer service was also extremely frustrating because one representative would contradict what another representative or supervisor had previously told me.

After nearly a year of dealing with this monthly headache, I finally switched electricity companies.

And THAT has been the biggest relief.

Direct Energy started as a headache and remained a headache until the day I left.

Based on my experience, I would NOT recommend Direct Energy. Before signing up, read the Electricity Facts Label carefully, understand exactly how your rate changes at different kWh levels, and don’t assume that a plan recommended by customer service will automatically lower your bill.

I wish I had switched sooner.

I needed just 3 days extension on my due date during the worst time of the year in the heat of the summer in Texas. Instead of allowing me to go on their website or the app and request the extension I went on to chat and waited for 30 minutes to get an answer and they wouldn't even offer an extension of 3 days. This company is horrible. They bought out the company I was with before, so I got forced into using them. I highly recommend going with a different company. I had them years ago and wasn't ever going back but my account was bought by them.

Direct Energy bait and swith promotion…

Direct Energy bait and swith promotion with Vivant. Promo stated that as long as I was a customer of Direct Energy, for an initial charge of $99 I would be provided with Smart home functiona equipment i.e smart Thorostat, security systems, etc at no cost for monthly monitoring. Install technician showed up and went over everything that was included and presented me with a bill in excess of $1000 and a montly charge of $56 for monitoring.

After discussions witih representatives from both companies over the course of two days they promotion was disavowed. I found a Direct Energy website and in black and white it proved my understanding of the promo offer at the beginning of this review. The job order number that should have been issued was incorrect leadin to the proposed cost I mentioned earlier.

Bottom line was neither company would honor the statements on the Direct Energy web site. All contact with Vivant ended and my next move is to cancel Direct Energy as my electric provider and find a company that stands by its published word.

Absolutely horrific

Absolutely horrific. These clowns couldn't find their butts to wipe em. Heart patient in hospital missed a auto pay date. Then was put on non credit basis. Had to go to Walmart to pay. I did at their request. Then I tried to get out of contract. I was told I'd be penalized 400.00 So I was forced to stay. I called to get due balance. They not only told me to go to Walmart but also made sure I wrote down phone # and address. Then I called to confirm payment. I was told payment wouldn't post from Walmart for a week. THESE ARE NOT HONEST NOR REPUTABLE. THE WHOLE COMPANY IS MADE UP CHILDREN. THESE ARE THE ONES SITTING IN BACK OF CLASSROOM !! And God forbid you can understand them.

Beware: False claim of cancellation fee on legal 14-day provider switch

Someone from Direct Energy (DE) called my parents claiming they owed a cancellation fee on the day we started service with a new Retail Electricity Provider (REP), despite our switch occurring within the 14-day window of contract expiration. We were only with DE because they bought out accounts from our previous provider. I find it very hard to believe that someone from a REP is not aware of this Texas legal right, especially since this came from a call instead of a letter or bill. My parents are elderly, and I can't help but wonder whether tactics like this specifically target unsuspecting seniors who may be unaware of their legal rights.

What's even more surprising is DE actually sent us an email almost 3 weeks prior, notifying that our contract would be expiring soon and provided the renewal offer. Further, in the excerpt below, they stated we could cancel as of the date of the email and would not be charged a cancellation fee:

"The cancellation fee for your current plan no longer applies. (Although the cancellation fee for your current plan was scheduled to remain applicable until at least 14 days before your first meter read on or after x/xx/2026, Direct Energy has waived this fee as of the date of this notice.)"

Clearly, they provided written documentation that any cancellation fee would be waived immediately. So now we have shady behavior AND incompetence. Perfect combo. Stay away from this company.

Transferred their service to you without your consent

Transferred their service to you without your consent. The call rep was extremely rude and pushy. He tried everything to get your new address and information to transfer service to you without your consent. I explicitly expressed I don't transfer and requested stop service from my previous address. However, the second day I received a message from my current electricity provider saying I requested moving out, which actually the direct energy did. I hope the government can do something on this shit company.

Company sucks

I've been a customer of direct energy for a little over 10 years. They started decent back in the day and became total trash to their loyal customers. I moved away from them and found someone else. It was worth paying the early termination fee of closecto $500 just to get away from them. They are way over priced and there customer service sucks. Find another company. Do not go with these people.

Awful experience!!! After being misinformed about the deposit I decided not to go with their service. I've been fighting since 5/9 for my deposit to be out back in my account. From the supervisors Cesar to the employees are untruthful. Do better Direct Energy!!!

If ever you should be approached in the…

If ever you should be approached in the mall, by a salesperson from Direct Energy. RUN SCREAMING! Direct Energy allowed someone who isn't on my account, access to my account. Instead of cooperating with the RCMP, Direct Energy decided to play "Perry Mason" with the police instead. To the point of frustration, where the RCMP decided that my complaint was more trouble than it is worth, and dropped my complaint altogether. Direct Energy exserted more effort into assisting the person, who they helped break into my account. More than they did by assisting me, their customer. I spoke to a smug, smarmy, unprofessional reprobate. By the name of Paul. Paul has license to speak to customers anyway he pleases. Because there is no manager within Direct Energy higher than him. If I could have given this sorry excuse for a company 0 stars, I would have. If you value your privacy, security, and identity. Avoid these dregs at all costs! They truly don't give a shit about you.

I would like to make the public aware of the contract for Monthly average contract.

I would like to make the public aware of issues I had with Direct Energy. I put my house up for sale in March 2026 due to a medical necessity to relocate toe a Chartwell Retirement Residence. The house sold the first day and I contacted Direst Energy to cancel contract. I Wass told they would do so on 1 APR 26 and wave the requires 30 day required for the average plan they have to keep the payments at constant level.

I received a bill for March which I paid and the next day I received another bill to cover the so called savings per month. I explained this to three people in Customer Relations and explained the circumstances for being unable to cancel prior to 30 days. Which I find would have had not bearing on the catch clause that when you cancel this plan you are hit with all the charges you thought you had saved.

After speaking with three individuals in Customer Service staff which include to levels of supervisor. I was told that even under my circumstances (medical). they would not refund the addition charges.

I was deeply unimpressed by the cold attitude they had even with the circumstances I provided. There seemed to be a disconnect between the person I first stalked with and those further up the chain of Customer Service.

I would Direct Energy to ensure they put this contract issue in big red letters on each bill.

Direct Energy has terrible billing…

Direct Energy has terrible billing practices. They didn't send me a bill for one month. I contacted them and they said that no payment was due for that month. Then they decided to send me 2 bills due in following month. We are talking about $900. Ridiculous!
