I had my mortgage with ING Bank
I had my mortgage with ING Bank, which was bought out by Scotia Bank, which put it in its all-digital bank, Tangerine. My mortgage went with Tangerine. I had no problems with ING. I have had nothing but problems with Tangerine. This last episode is really unbelievable. I live in BC. I had my mortgage with Tangerine and decided to transfer it to a local credit union. I did this in May, and they paid out the mortgage at Tangerine in full. In BC, seniors can opt for the government to pay their property taxes until the house is sold. When I moved my mortgage, my account was accidentally closed. I have been trying since June to get it reopened. It never was. I have been assessed penalties because my taxes remain unpaid. I am on a fixed income and could not pay it on my own. Today, after dealing with five different government departments, I find the reason is that Tangerine never lifted the mortgage lien. They are legally bound to do so within 30 days of the change in mortgage holder. It has been over 90 days. As others have stated, it is impossible to reach anyone at Tangerine by phone. The wait time is long. If they say to ask for a callback and someone will call you, well, I got called, and it asked me to punch 1 so the agent would come on the line. I did so. Then it repeated that, and I did. After three tries, the machine hung up on me. Any emails to them go as 'undeliverable'. I finally sent a letter via priority post (76 cost) to beg them to email it to the BC Land Registry Office so I could get my tax deferral. It has not been done. If they do not do it by September 10th, I will lose all right to get tax deferral for this year. I will be contacting the Ontario Banking Ombudsman and the Canadian National Banking Ombudsman to lodge a formal complaint against both Tangerine and Scotia Bank. If you have the same problem, I urge you to do so as well. This bank needs to be dealt with legally by the government for their failure to act in good faith with their clients.
