Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 640 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people expressed significant dissatisfaction with the pricing and low payouts for items they sold, often feeling the returns were minimal even for high-quality or new clothing. Customers frequently found the fees for selling and the overall value for money to be poor. Additionally, the return policy caused frustration due to unexpected charges for returns, restocking, or for items that arrived damaged or incorrectly described. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied when buying, appreciating the good deals on items often in new or excellent condition. Some reviewers also noted accurate item descriptions and a wonderful selection of clothing available.

Terrible!!

Terrible!!! The absolute worst second hand website ever!!
Where to even begin.
Purchased several flats and sandals- the leather on the inside and outside peeled from my first time wearing, they went into the trash. A couple were cheap cheap…
I kept one dress out of fourteen.
Couldn’t return three or four of them.
And what was returned was prorated for restocking fees, So I don’t even get back what I paid.
Would never recommend or purchase from this place ever again.

I recently placed multiple orders on…

I recently placed multiple orders on thredup for the 1st time. To try to manage my expectations, I picked mostly brands I was familiar with their fit and picked very good condition with only minor wear/ NWT. Many of the items were in good shape. Two items were in horrible shape. One had a giant hole and the other item had tons of stains all over it. When I reached out to them and sent photos, they want to encourage more orders so they offer discounts on future orders and tried to say that they have a robust QC Team but things still get past them every so often. The stained item I would never ever wear as it is stained in multiple places. The item with the giant hole is crocheted and might be able to be closed. For me, I think I would prefer going back to local consignment shops as they do better quality control.

Thredup is easy to sell too low payout

Thredup is easy to sell to just print label mail off getting payout is easy but payouts are very low on most items and they are not very skilled in which are good brands or not they will really misprice items or even reject them. For Just one of many examples I had a dress new with tags over 350 dollars new they listed it as assorted brands 20 bucks or something my payout was 1.72
But if you just want to get rid of stuff and are happy to get anything than it ok.

I just started using Thredup

I just started using Thredup, and so far I'm really happy with everything.
My purchases, the selling, and customer service.
The clothes I buy here are normally expensive in store But here, I can usually buy it from 1/2 or 1/3 the price. So far I've sent in 3 bags a shortly my 4th. I'm not hoping to get rich, I cleaned out my closet. And I just hope someone else gets to enjoy the item, like I did. I've read many of the reviews of unhappy customers, this is thrifting on line, you won't get what you paid for it. And if you wanted more money for your item, you should have listed it yourself. Or sold it elsewhere. And what they dont except, I truely hope someone gets to wear it and enjoy it.
Thredup is a great company to take ppls clean used clothing and sell it for you. They do the work, ALL THE WORK. THEY package it and ship it, at no cost to the seller. So what if they charge you for shipping you, your bag, for their services. At least you can make a few bucks.
So Thredup, I've told a few ppl about your business. And they seem super happy with what they purchase. Just like me, and I've only got 1 thing I wasn't happy with. I made them into shorts. They look 110% better as shorts. I will keep buying from Thredup and I will keep selling with Thredup also. Thank for making this so easy. I appreciate the work you do, and am thankful to make a few bucks here and there. But I'm pretty sure I'll never see a penny of that money, because I'll use it on purchases from Thredup

This company totally ripped me off for designer goods

This company totally ripped me off. I got an add for cleaning out my closet and selling stuff on consignment. It offered to send in my things (they provide a free shipping label) and I'd get paid once they sell. I thought, hey, that's easy, and I do have stuff I'd like to sell but I never have the time for it.

Well, a few weeks later, after sending in probably 20-30 pieces, a few items sell so I check the portal. Turns out I'm making pennies on items that sold for $20-50, AND they didn't "accept" about half my items I sent in, giving random, arbitrary, totally subjective reasons as to why they did not accept them.

Two of the items were high value; one was vintage designer. Worth a few hundred dollars at least. The portal says "this item will be reused or responsibly recycled." BULLSHIT.

Someone in their back office obviously scooped up this vintage designer piece and the company wanted nothing to do with me when I contacted for help. Just "sorry, you should have purchased Return Assurance for $35."

Ridiculous. Theft. I see why they've got 1.3 stars on here.

My mistake; I guess you just want things to be what they claim they are. Should have done my due diligence on the front end before I flushed hundreds of dollars down the toilet.

Thredup is a joke beyond joke

Thredup is a joke beyond joke. Sent them 4 of the 5 bags and literally the clothes sent were valued over $2000 in value and I've literally made $35.00 I am beyond shocked at the amount they steal from customers and then they decide what they think is of value and "donate" what they want or steal and keep for themselves and then if you want to buy your items back they want to charge like $5.00 per item to get them back....biggest scam ever...thinking of filing a class action lawsuit against this company.

Jessica,

We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience hasn’t met your expectations, and we understand how frustrating this must be. This is not the way we want our sellers to feel. We understand that sending in items of value requires trust, and our team evaluates each item based on current resale demand, condition, and brand performance on our platform.

To help set expectations in advance, we offer a payout estimator so sellers can preview potential earnings and decide if we are the right option before sending in a Clean Out. While we aim to price items competitively to help them sell, payouts and acceptance can vary, and specific amounts cannot be guaranteed.

We truly value the trust our sellers place in us and are always working to improve transparency in the Clean Out process. If you would like our team to take a closer look at your results, please feel free to contact our Support Team.

No skills selection process

Several years ago I had a pretty good experience with ThredUp so I decided to give them another try. My daughter buys a lot of clothes and never wears them so we sent 3 bags of her things recently. Now I see that they listed no name brands that barely give a payout and rejected lots of never worn designer items like Levi’s, Betty Barclay, Coldwater Creek, DNKY, as well as lots of Forever 21 items. A brand new swimsuit from Speedo also not accepted. I don’t know who makes the decisions there but they are obviously not very skilled. Never again!

Do NOT send them clothes

I sent them 2 clean out bags of clothes. 1 had 81 items of new or like new kids clothes, most of which were popular brands. They listed 17 and donated the rest. The ones that hey did list, if they sell, I will make pennies. Absolute scam.

Junky and Smelly

A couple of years ago I bought two beautiful pair of shoes on ThredUp. Unfortunately, things have changed.

I recently bought pants and shoes. Not only was everything junky and not like the pictures but all the items, including the two pair of shoes, had evidently been sprayed with Febreze. Sickening. I could have washed the pants 10 times in white vinegar to maybe remove the smell but how do you get the chemicals out of shoes? NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN. Wasted over $75.00.

I would give thredUP negative stars if…

I would give thredUP negative stars if I could. I spent days curating a bundled package before a trip. They sent the wrong package and never offered to track mine down. Total waste of time. I had to spend an hour online with customer service to get a refund. They offered an apology and a $20 credit. I’m sending the package back because I feel bad for everyone involved. But I have limited mobility and it is literally going to be a heavy lift. Hard pass next time.

The clothing can be very used. The sizing is inaccurate. I am purchasing a size xl and many of the clothes in that size do not fit. The prices are too high for what you get. The bras I purchased are disgusting and I would not even try them on. Good idea but lacking on quality.

My Love Has Slowly Dwindled....

For me it was a sad downward spiral with ThredUp as I absolutely loved them in the beginning! The deals I got for items still with tags on them was unmatched compared to other sites. Even pre-owned items I purchased were in great condition. Their commitment and dedication to having people buy pre-owned is something that I completely loved and stood behind however other things not so much. Customer service takes forever to get in contact with and quite often you are waiting forever to get a response back from anyone with no option to talk to anyone live. The most frustrating thing however and the reason I've issued my single star rating is because of the shipping/delivery. 3 times (with this week being the 3rd) my packages were delivered and left outside by the delivery driver after hours and were stolen in spite of the directive's provided to not deliver after hours or on the weekends. These were items that I carefully selected and would never find again. But it is the overall lack of interest from ThredUp to make sure that this type of thing stops happening that's really most upsetting. Sometimes just refunding the customers money is just not enough. Showing that you care by holding someone accountable is what needs to be done especially when the online reviews are horrific!

I sold my first item on ThredUp

I sold my first item on ThredUp. Now, maybe I didn’t look too deep into getting paid after listing items, but I didn’t realize in order to cash out you have to have PayPal or Stripe (which I’ve never heard of). I refuse to use PayPal as my account has been hacked many times. So I got stripe. Really annoying process to set up. I ended up texting customer service on ThredUp and they just stopped replying? I eventually figured out how to do the damn Stripe transfer then it told me it’ll be 3-5 business days. Poshmark and Mercari are such easier apps to sell through. This app has very little brands and the clothes seem to be beat up too. I couldn’t find one thing I was willing to use my credit on.

Long story short, this app sucks.

I should have researched better

I should have researched better. I sent a dozen items, several of which were rejected (that's fine). One was sold but I received no money. The biggest seller, I received less than 18% of the purchase price. Of 3 dresses (one formal) and a blouse, I was paid $13.25. I would have preferred to bring it to the local charity. The others did not sell within the 45 days. It would have cost me more than $5 each to have them returned.

THEY KEEP WHAT THEY WANT AND LIST THE REST

Sent a lot of my items to get sold

Some frivolous items got listed, but my other mint condition specialty items were rejected and "recycled". When I confronted them, they said it wasn't up to standards and ended the chat. Sure, my Opening Ceramony with no damage or stain got "recycled" but my decade old Uniqlo pants was listed. Sounds to me like the person that processed picked out what they wanted to keep categorized them as "recycled".
