What does it take to build a viable portfolio career? We recently chatted with George Minogue, who is two years into finding out. At 62, after 35 years in enterprise tech, he left his full-time role to advise startups that needed his support. When asked what he enjoyed most about his fractional career he said: “As cliche as it sounds, no two weeks are the same. One week is helping a startup rethink its go-to-market. The next, is spotting supply-chain risk or introducing a founder to the one person in my network who can solve a problem I can’t.” While he would describe his portfolio career as thriving, he doesn’t make light of the fact it took groundwork to get there. “If there was a program like Connectd when I was 50, I would've had the time to build my portfolio alongside my full-time role ... and set myself up earlier.” A portfolio career isn’t something you simply fall into at the end of a corporate career. Claire Matern, the founder of JONI, was over in the UK this week, so we could do a proper hands-on working session instead of another call. We were connected through Connectd. I've always been flexible about where and how people want to work, because I don't want to give a potential client a barrier to getting a call in. That has meant late night calls because of the time difference for a pitch with LA. But also, it's the flexibility I want myself. Relationships can be built in any way, but it is true that business relationships are made stronger when sitting around a table. The session was the culmination of months of hard work and conversations. Part of it was aligning the narrative. Claire has honed how she describes JONI over years of selling it to people, and the site has to say the same thing. Drift happens. Too often, team bonding means going to the pub. Don’t get me wrong, a pub in the sun over the last few months has been bloody lovely… but chucking your team on quad bikes and sending them off on a scavenger hunt takes it to another level. We recently got the Connectd team together for a proper adventure, and it was one of the best team-building activities we’ve done. A great way to get people working together, have a laugh, and see your colleagues in a completely different light. Huge thanks to Jim Dixon for organising it.
