A Sixt employee drove a vehicle over…

A Sixt employee drove a vehicle over our ski bag at a pedestrian crossing while my husband was crossing on the way to the airport. The driver refused to stop and deal with it, but several witnesses — including two of his own colleagues — documented the incident in writing. The car crushed the ski bag’s wheels and base beyond repair and damaged one ski. A Sixt representative at the airport gave us contact details and told us the damage would be covered by corporate insurance.

I submitted the witness statement, photos, and the receipt, and requested reimbursement. Six months and endless follow-ups later, I have nothing — not even the rental voucher I offered to accept to make it simple. A straightforward case handled with total indifference.

Great experience with SIXT in Calgary

I had a great experience renting a car with SIXT in Calgary. The entire rental process was smooth and straightforward, from picking up the car to returning it. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful, and everything was handled quickly without any unnecessary hassle.

The car was in great condition and perfectly suited for my trip through Calgary and Banff. Overall, a very positive experience and I would definitely rent from SIXT again!

Fraudulent upselling at Frankfurt Airport - Misled by staff (Res: 9732444698)

I was completely scammed by the counter staff at Frankfurt Airport. My original prepaid booking was 2,445.70 EUR. However, the staff sneakily added a "Choice Upgrade" (1,176.30 EUR) and other unwanted insurance options without explaining the extra costs. They just asked me to sign for "vehicle vehicle pickup". No sane person would agree to pay an extra 1,600 EUR for a 10-day rental if properly informed! I have emailed customer service multiple times, but they keep hiding behind the signature and refusing to refund. This is a highly deceptive and predatory business practice targeting international tourists. Give me my 1,606.48 EUR back!

Worst car rental experience I have ever had – Frankfurt Airport

I had an extremely disappointing experience renting from SIXT at Frankfurt Airport.

When I arrived, the colleague at reception handed me a child car seat and gave me directions on where to collect the vehicle/key. Unfortunately, the instructions were very difficult to understand due to the communication/language barrier. I spent around 30 minutes walking around with a child car seat trying to find the key box and locate the vehicle.

When I finally got the key and reached the car, the situation became even worse. The vehicle was not functioning. The engine warning light was on, and the car would not start at all. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to get the vehicle working, but it simply would not start.

As it was late at night and I was travelling with a child, I had no choice but to return the key and arrange alternative transportation. This resulted in additional costs for an Uber and caused a huge amount of unnecessary stress.

What makes the situation even more frustrating is SIXT's response afterwards. They are refusing to refund the rental and claim that the vehicle was inspected shortly after I returned the key and was supposedly working.

I have repeatedly asked SIXT to provide the inspection report, the exact time of the inspection, and evidence that the vehicle was actually started and tested after I returned the key. They have not provided any of this documentation.

I know what I experienced: the car did not start and I could not use it. The fact that SIXT says the car was used again later does not prove that it was working when I collected it.

I am extremely disappointed with how SIXT has handled this complaint. A customer should not be charged for a vehicle that was unusable at the time of collection, especially when the company cannot provide evidence supporting its refusal to refund.

I would strongly recommend that SIXT properly investigates this matter and provides the evidence requested rather than simply dismissing the customer's experience.

Bad car rental company

A very unsavoury experience with Sixt, like an assassin they come with smiles, until you get home and find charges that in no way have been discussed with the client.
Sadly we could not even consider dealing with them again.
Please be very aware that if your rental car is towed, Sixt dither and let things drift on and then hit you with a bill from hell.
Those smiles are fake folks. Watch these guys closely.

If I could give 0 stars I would

If I could give 0 stars I would. This company defrauds its customers. DON'T USE THEM. Here's what happened (I originally submitted this to Better Business Bureau, and Sixt got it removed because of all their subsidiary shenanigans, so I'm posting here).

I rented a vehicle from Sixt in Germany from 5/7 to 5/14. Sixt reached out to me after I returned my rental car and told me that they noted damage on return (a scratch in the paint on the rear right of the car), and that they were quoting me 1500 euros (more than $1800). I did not get in any collisions or cause any damage to the car while I was operating the vehicle during the time it was in my possession. I called the customer service line twice (both resulted in >1 hour holds that I had to end for other appointments, with no answer), and also messaged with an online agent, who told me she was not able to help me, and I would need to communicate with the German Damages Department directly through email. I sent my first email to them on June 4 requesting photos of the car from pick up (to show me that the damage was new). They never answered this first email so I opened an insurance claim with my credit card, since my credit card benefits provide car insurance for rental cars. I sent Sixt a second email on June 11, informing them that I did not plan to pay them directly and that I opened an insurance claim, and I needed more information from them in order to complete the claim form. Sixt never responded to this email either. On June 15, Sixt charged my credit card $1813.41 without my consent, and without addressing my previous requests for documents. I immediately disputed the charge, since Sixt never answered any of my emails, offered proof that the damage occurred while I possessed the car, and never furnished the information I needed to proceed with the insurance claim. On June 30, Cassandra Niesing from Sixt emailed me and stated that they "were able to identify the cause of damage to our vehicle and closed the file". I asked for clarification and never received an answer. On July 16, I received yet another email from Sixt's automated email service reminding me that I had outstanding bills to pay.

The only thing making me comfortable with the situation at this point is that my credit card is closed and Sixt doesn't have any of my up-to-date information. This company will steal from you if they can. Stay away.

Great service, personal touch

Very happy with service. Walked in after another booking was cancelled. Leon, the agent at the desk, was very helpful, organised me a BMW on the spot and said I didn't have to refill the tank due to the issues I had with the previous booking. A nice touch considering the stress of being late for a business trip that morning.

Nightmare experience with Sixt Europe

I just recently made a trip to Germany with the intent to rent a Porsche cabriolet 911 and do a dream drive over the Alps into Italy for my stay at Lake Como. I research different car rental companies and ended up deciding on Sixt, mostly because I figured they were a large organization with thousands of locations across Europe and a complete service team. If I had any issues with the car, I would be best serve to go with a large company, especially being in Europe. I rented the car from their Munich office, and the car was in decent shape, but unbeknownst to me was given to me with extremely worn and dangerous tires on the vehicle. On the first day of my drive I noticed the air pressure indicator going off so I stopped and filled and to continue to lose pressure for the next day. Once I arrived at my destination, I notified Sixt and they said they could not send out a repair person. That’s not what they do. They can either take the car completely and not guarantee me any replacement vehicle. I had the car inspected at the local repair shop and they found that the tire was extremely dangerous and should have never left the rental yard. I notified Sixt and they arranged to have a flatbed come pick up the vehicle the next morning. I literally spent at least 15 hours over at least 20 phone calls dealing with their AI systems and being cut off and disconnected too many times to count. Over the following four days and huge frustration, not knowing how I was going to get back to Munich with no car let alone in the car that I had arranged to rent. I was promised at least four times that they were on it and would find me a replacement car, but that never happened. I had to cut off my trip shorts and fly home out of Milan, costing me large amounts of money for ticket, replacements, and hotel stays. To make matters even worse.Sixt then charged my credit card for the full amount due which was over $3200 which was supposed to be for seven days rental, when I actually only had access to use the vehicle for two days. This whole experience literally ruined my trip and to this day, they are not issuing me the full refund that I am due, even though I was very reasonable about the entire situation. In my opinion, I will never use this company again nor should anybody trust them, especially when traveling abroad.

Awaiting 3 months for an answer

finally received an answer following three follow-ups and almost three months of delay and two visits in person.

I had forgotten two items in the car, an B&O headset (1000 euros) and a UGREEN power bank (150 euros) in May and they responded in August. Of course, they haven’t found anything although we were two people knowing that I left them there and I contacted them the following day.

I am extremely dissatisfied with the level of customer service I have received, particularly considering that I am a returning Sixt customer (15 to 20 times the last 2 years in Frankfurt and Chicago).

It is especially disappointing that Sixt is quick to approach customers when seeking a five-star review, yet when a customer requires assistance, repeated emails and follow-ups can simply go unanswered for months. This falls far below the level of service I would expect from a company such as Sixt.

Moreover, as my emails were addressed directly to Thomas (store director at Frankfurt airport and he has contacted me previously for a 5 star review), I would have expected, at the very least as a matter of professional courtesy, a response from him regarding my requests. Unfortunately, Sixt has failed to meet even this basic expectation.

Financial rip-off

Great service at pick up, very accommodating sales agent, but financially a complete rip-off. I was wrongly sold additional insurance that was already included. When this was pointed out at a later stage, SIXT completely refused to accept their mistake and refund the additional charge or even part of it. On top of that, I paid a deposit upfront, but SIXT applied the wrong amount on the invoice leaving me out of pocket again. Customer Service did reply quite promptly to my first email, but stopped engaging completely afterwards. Value for money was okay at time of booking, but a few hundred extra Euros on top of initial price have made this a rip off. I will not book with SIXT again and certainly will not recommend SIXT

Advanced booking

We booked a car 5 months in advance, two days before we were to pick it up, they told us to go to another location being their location was closed on Sunday. There was no car available to us when we got there, they told us the first location just cancelled our reservation. It was nuts!! If I could give them a zero, I would.

Worst company I have encountered

Very possibly the worst company (not just car hire company) I have ever encountered.

I rented a car from Weeze airport in June 2026. I started to encounter issues right from pick up. The QR code I should have received to access the key from the key collection box was never sent through (25 mins on hold to customer service then followed), the car was smaller than requested (making in touch and go whether our luggage would fit) and one of the car seats was smaller than advertised. There were no Sixt employees to raise these issues with because the desk had closed early that day.

Determined to make the best of a bad situation, we drove off and started our holiday. Unfortunately on day 3, I clipped a curb and picked up a puncture. The roadside assistance team (not directly part of Sixt) were very helpful and arranged a pick up truck and booked me a replacement from Weeze Airport.

That should have been the end of the drama but upon turning up at the Sixt desk at Weeze Airport I was told my car had been given to another customer and that there were no cars left. When I asked why this was the case I was told that they only hold cars for 60 mins after booking time. The fact that only 50 mins had passed since the booking seemed to have little impact on the most helpful woman in the world. Instead she told me that the desk was now closed and retreated into the back office!

After much stress we decided not to try and secure a second replacement. I then contacted Sixt asking for a refund for the unused days in the hire period and for the taxi costs of my pointless return trip to Weeze Airport. After 5 weeks of radio silence and much chasing, I was given a refund for the unused days but Sixt still think I should bear the cost of taxis to a pick up that they reneged on.

Avoid Sixt at all costs!

Very disappointing and misleading…

Very disappointing and misleading experience with SIXT Munich (Airport).

I booked a VW, but it was not available when I arrived. I was given a BMW X3 instead. At no point was I offered the Volvo XC60 that SIXT later claimed was offered to me. More importantly, nobody told me that the BMW X3 was an upgrade or that it would cost an additional €277.31. Had I been told, I would have declined it.

After returning the car, I was charged €277.31 for the upgrade, plus additional related charges. When I complained, SIXT simply stated that I had signed the rental agreement.

There was also a very unpleasant experience regarding insurance. I showed the representative documentation for supplemental insurance I had purchased through Rentalcars.com. Instead of simply explaining my options, he insisted that the insurance was "no good" and pressured me to purchase SIXT's insurance.

I have disputed these charges and SIXT has refused to take responsibility.

I would strongly recommend checking every charge carefully before signing anything at this location and being extremely cautious about accepting any "replacement" vehicle or insurance offered at the counter.

Unlawful Upgrade Charge at Düsseldorf Airport – Demand Full Refund (404.73 EUR)

I pre-paid 615.63 EUR months in advance for an IWAR (Station Wagon) category vehicle at Düsseldorf Airport (June 13–21, 2026) to travel comfortably with my family. Upon arrival, SIXT failed to provide the booked vehicle due to fleet shortage—which SIXT Customer Relations later confirmed in writing ("due to the unavailability of the originally reserved vehicle").

Under international rental rules, when the reserved category is unavailable, the customer must be given a higher category vehicle FREE OF CHARGE (Free Upgrade). Instead, the counter staff exploited the situation while I was traveling with two young children and forced me to sign a "Choice Upgrade" for an Audi A6, charging an extra 404.73 EUR (340.11 EUR + VAT).

SIXT acknowledged their fleet failure and offered a 50% partial refund. However, because this extra charge was caused 100% by SIXT's breach of contract, charging any fee is unlawful. I demand a FULL refund of 404.73 EUR immediately.

Fraudsters - do use another company

Impossible to contact if needed, slow if any replies, and it was quite clear, that they make their money on fraudelent claims about damages. Had so spend several weeks of writing back and forth to make them accept, that I had documented the damages when picking up the car. No emailaddress or phonenumber to get in touch with them. And more than a month since the rental, I haven't got my deposit back. Use someone else - they can't be as shit as sixt!

Gross Misinformation by Counter Agent…

Gross Misinformation by Counter Agent at Munich Airport – Rental Agreement 9613235036
On 05/08/2026, I picked up a rental vehicle at Munich Airport (Terminal 1) under Rental Agreement 9613235036.
Before driving to Austria, I specifically asked the counter representative if the added Cross-Border option covered all legal requirements for driving in Austria through 19/08/2026. The representative explicitly confirmed that it did and completely failed to inform me about the mandatory Austrian toll sticker (Vignette).
Relying on this official advice, I entered Austria, where I was stopped by ASFINAG toll enforcement officers and fined €200 on the spot for lacking a Vignette.
This is severe negligence and misrepresentation by Sixt staff. I have reached out to customer support regarding this unacceptable service failure but have been completely ignored.

Fantastic Customer Service at Sixt Zagreb

I had a great experience with the Sixt Team in Zagreb. Everything from the pick up to the return was smooth and well organized.
We had a flight delay and arrived after the Sixt office's opening hours in Zagreb. A member of the Sixt team in Stuttgart was incredibly kind and helpful and contacted the Sixt team in Zagreb in advance on our behalf and made sure everything was arranged despite our late arrival.
The vehicle was clean, comfortable and in good condition.
What impressed me the most was the return process. It was quick, simple and stress free. I would especially like to thank the employee in the return office. He was incredibly friendly, polite, helpful and professional. His positive attitude and genuine kindness made a real difference! Great customer service like this is rare these days and it deserves to be recognized. Employees like him are a real asset to the company.
Thank you to the Sixt Team in Zagreb. I would be happy to rent from you again in the future!

Billed €948 for damage their own rental contract lists as pre-existing

I rented from Sixt in Freiburg (May 31 to June 2, 2026). After return, Sixt billed me €948.62 for a rear passenger-side alloy wheel scratch (5-10 cm, down to primer).

That exact damage is listed as pre-existing on Sixt's own rental agreement for the vehicle I was given (M-KB 3476). The pre-existing damage section reads, word for word: "Alufelge hinten Beifahrerseite Kratzer 5-10 cm (bis Grundierung)," which is rear alloy rim, passenger side, scratch 5-10 cm, down to primer. In other words, the damage was documented on the car before I ever drove it.

Sixt's own return inspection recorded only a "superficial" wheel-arch scratch, not a rim scratch, yet the invoice bills a full alloy wheel replacement. I disputed this in writing, with the contract attached, pointing to the pre-existing entry. I have received only automated payment reminders and now a threat to send it to collections, with no response addressing the fact that their own contract shows the damage pre-dated my rental.

I am asking Sixt to withdraw a claim that their own documents do not support.

Damage no. 9078113557 / Rental agreement 9611010994
