Had a car braking issue. Called Sixt customer service. They kept transferring me to next agent. Total 7 agents and 58 minutes later got someone to help me. Seriously poor customer service

Unjustified Late Return Fee & Failure to Acknowledge Digital Proof (Sixt Augsburg)

I am writing this review to urge prospective renters to exercise extreme caution at Sixt Augsburg and maintain detailed, time-stamped proof for every vehicle drop-off.
Summary of the Incident:
Drop-off Schedule: July 21, 2026, at 17:00
Actual Arrival at Facility: July 21, 2026, at 16:21
Key Drop Box Time: July 21, 2026, at 16:24
Despite returning the vehicle nearly 40 minutes early and taking photos/videos at drop-off, I received an automated notification on July 22 claiming the car had not been returned.
When I called customer service, the local Augsburg branch confirmed the vehicle was on the lot. However, instead of correcting the glitch, Sixt recorded the return time as 18:00 (1 hour late) and assessed extra charges.
Even after providing clear metadata photos, time-stamped videos, and garage entry records, customer support has failed to correct the system error and adjust my invoice - requested further emails to annoy or suck it up.
Altering return timestamps and assessing late fees when a customer has verifiable entry proof is completely unacceptable customer treatment. I have formally requested a corrected invoice and will proceed with a credit card dispute and consumer agency escalation (Verbraucherzentrale) if these erroneous charges are not promptly reversed.

Dishonest branch agents lying to upsell car upgrades, customer support refuses to help

We rented a car at the Flensburg branch in December 2025 with the intention of driving to Austria and Italy. I think i had booked a VW Golf on the website with the cross country travel. When we arrived at the branch in Flensburg by train, the agent told us that the car wasn't available and we had the option of choosing a slightly cheaper worse option or upgrade to an Audi A5 which would be about 200 Euro more expensive. At first i was hesitant but the agent offered to give me a few discounts, up the protection on the insurance and a few other things so the upgrade was only about 100-120 euros as far as i remember. I ended up agreeing to it as he spent a considerable time trying to convince me and the car was a bit nicer.

We had a long conversation where i was prodding about the upgrade to make sure everything was okay. He kept saying "you're fully covered don't worry". I then asked him about the cross country travel if that would follow the new car on the upgrade, he said yes of course. I also asked him if the car had the needed stickers in the window to be travel to both Austria and Italy. The salesmen again assured us that everything was taken care of and we only needed to worry about local tolls on some of the roads in those two countries.

After returning from our vacation we handed in the car and everything was fine, the process was okay, we got the refund of the deposit after a few days, and as i always do after vacation, i cancel my credit card because i want to make sure some foreign company doesn't try to abuse it.

Fast forward 7 months, i receive an email that i owe Sixt 120 Euros for a "traffic infraction". Weird, my trip was 7 months ago, but i guess the foreign police could be working slow. Obviously i'm thinking that i must have gotten a speeding ticket, so i check it out and it turns out to be from Asfinag which is Austrias tolling company. We did drive on one toll road, which we paid for and i could prove with my receipt. I quickly called the company, and to my surprise they told me the fine was for not having the required vignette sticker in the window.

I contact Sixt again, asking them to anull the invoice as there must have been a mistake by their branch agent in making sure it was taken care of, considering he assured my verbally it was. The agent on the phone tells me that the agent probably forgot to switch it when we did the car upgrade, but she says i have to email another department for the anulment.

The response i get from this other department is just a very simple quoted page from deep within their terms saying its my responsibility to buy the vignette sticker before driving into Austria. Obviously i plead my case back and forth with the department telling them that i would understand that if the agent hadn't assured me that i didn't have to worry about it. They will not budge and now i am here trying to file a complaint with a customer protection agency.

In summation

- The branch agent lied about coverage to complete the sale of an expensive car upgrade. He could have just said remember to buy the vignette sticker after we told him multiple times about our plans to go to Austria (they are only like 10 euros), but he clearly used it as a sales tactic not caring about the fine i would inevitably incur.

- The customer service department does not trust the words of their customers and are fine with their sales people lying trying to upsell their customers with sleazy tactics

- The customer service as well as their accounting department is slow, awful and robotic, and now i have to deal with a large fine about 7 months after my trip

- I contacted my bank and the company apparently tried to charge my account 7 months ago with no written statement about what they were attempting to charge me for, the exact reason why i always cancel my cards after traveling.

- Do not use this company, if you do, do not ever have a conversation with a branch agent, just ask for the car you booked prior to your trip with nothing else and expect nothing to be covered from their side even if their employees offer you verbal guarantees.

Unfair Damage Charge – Rental 9612391399

Rental Number: 9612391399

The windshield was already cracked when I picked up the car. Despite this, they tried to hold me responsible for the damage. I provided a photo as evidence, but the experience was very disappointing. I do not recommend Sixt Düsseldor Zentrum HBF.

Be very careful when booking with Sixt

Be very careful when booking with Sixt, especially when choosing a prepaid reservation. Read all the terms and conditions carefully, as they appear to protect the company more than provide fair protection for both sides.

We requested to cancel the child car seats that had been added to our booking. Sixt initially confirmed that we would receive a refund, but the matter turned into almost two months of repeated communication. Each time, we received a reply from a different customer-service representative, and the case was handled inconsistently and unprofessionally.

We paid approximately €130 for the child car seats, but Sixt refunded only around €40. They refused to refund the remaining approximately €90 and repeatedly changed their explanation, referring to the terms and conditions and claiming that we had later added options relating to cross-border driving and returning the vehicle in another country. However, these options had already been selected when we originally made the booking.

Based on our experience, the customer service was extremely disappointing. The written responses were inconsistent, and a staff member even raised their voice during a phone call.

Customers living in Germany may want to consider having legal-expenses insurance when dealing with disputes involving companies like this. Overall, our experience with Sixt was stressful, time-consuming and handled very unprofessionally.

Absolutely unacceptable

Absolutely unacceptable! Sixt cancelled my confirmed reservation few days before without offering any alternative or taking responsibility. I made this reservation 3 month before my trip. A confirmed booking should mean something. This completely disrupted my plans and the lack of customer care was shocking. I expected far better from an international company. I will seriously reconsider using Sixt again and cannot recommend this agency to anyone.

Booked UFAR SUV at Frankfurt Airport – pressured into paying €588.67 extra

I booked a UFAR category vehicle at Frankfurt Airport for 11–22 June 2026, fully prepaid. Upon arrival at 22:00, after a long queue, I was told no suitable vehicle was available. The only free alternative offered was a Volvo XC60.
When I requested a Mercedes alternative, the supervisor (Kelvin) said an E-Class would cost €25/day extra, or a GLE €45/day extra. If the XC60 was genuinely equivalent to my booking, why were other options being charged? With a 5-hour night drive ahead and no other rental options at that hour, I had no real choice. I paid €588.67 more than my original booking.
I submitted four formal complaints (Case Nos. 18315520, 18406886, 18410906, 18410908). After receiving only automated replies for over a week, Sixt offered a 50% goodwill refund of the upgrade charge only — which does not cover the full disputed amount and does not acknowledge the circumstances under which I was pressured into signing.
I have declined this offer and the dispute remains unresolved. Chargeback initiated with my bank.
I will update this review when the matter is resolved.

A SIXT Review - Bait & Switch on an Advance Pay Rental

A SIXT Review – “MINUS STARS”. Consider this review in your decision to rent any vehicle from SIXT, either directly or through any 3rd parties. I will NOT again. I have experienced their “bait and switch” tactics for the 3rd and last time:

“Your RESERVED and PAID FOR vehicle is no longer available. BUT we can offer you this alternative upgrade - at a higher price.”

Finally, I emphatically replied “NO”; and pursued an alternate rental car company. SIXT owes me reimbursement for my alternate 3rd party vehicle rental: USD$1,297.19

I had reserved a vehicle for three days for pickup at SIXT – FRA; pickup May 27, 2026. The reservation was made through EXPEDIA; I received both EXPEDIA and SIXT confirmation numbers: Expedia itinerary: 73440683727690; SIXT Rental # 9733690594. BECOMING a client of BOTH Expedia and SIXT.

Concerned that I might be delayed from the expected pickup time, I attempted to update my pickup time through Expedia; the link would not work. I tried through SIXT also, via the internet (could not due to Expedia origination); by phone (went immediately to message – in German); and via text (I found a number and got a text through. Apparently, ignored.)

Upon my arrival the afternoon of May 27, 2026 at the SIXT – FRA counter: “Your vehicle is no longer available. But we can offer a higher-level vehicle at additional cost.”

MY RESERVED/PAID FOR IN ADVANCE vehicle rental is no longer available!!!! If the RESERVED/PAID FOR IN ADVANCE vehicle had sat for the PAID FOR three days, SIXT would have already reaped economic benefit: PAID FOR REVENUES, with “no miles/no wear and tear”

But SIXT apparently has a different business model:

“Accept PAID FOR rentals. Release the RESERVED/PAID FOR rental vehicles to other lessees (DOUBLE YOUR REVENUES for the same vehicle already under PAID rental). Then charge the original rental client additional fees.) THAT is “Bait and Switch”

If you like that behavior, rent from SIXT. I am still owed USD$1,297.19 for alternate third-party rental costs incurred. I will be re-posting this review until SIXT completes my reimbursement. As for the SIXT perspective: this is an Expedia problem. I also had a SIXT Rental #; became a SIXT client (for the last time).

Good luck to you as a SIXT client. (Victim?) Watch out for their explanation to you: “Yes, we will re-rent your RESERVED/PAID FOR vehicle. But don’t worry, SIXT will have a more expensive vehicle for you.”

I made a few months in advance to receive a rental car at Duesseldorf airport upon my arrival from usa via connecting amsterdam airport after arrival at Duesseldorf airport went to pick my car ,manager told me I already missed 30 minutes waiting time and now have to pay instead of $742 now would cost over $2100 . After arguing with manager I left this rental car without getting a car. I lost also over $210 for insurance (third party) as a result of this . I am very frustrated with service and dishonesty of this company. I was my first and last time I made booking with this company. Everyone knows that after arrival your destination you have to go through customs and immigration before that .all this happened on June 14th,2026 .

Promised 'no extra cost' in writing, then charged €651.79 over the agreed price

I was on a long-planned trip with my family and had fully prepaid a rental: EUR 356.95 (booking 9731479819), pick-up Koblenz, return Frankfurt Airport. The very first step went wrong: instead of the booked VW Tiguan I was given a much smaller car. Sixt itself then instructed me in writing to bring the car to Cologne for an exchange, which I did exactly.

At the Cologne City/Hilton station came the real, serious error: although I clearly stated the exchange both at drop-off and at the desk, the car was booked as a final return. This forced a completely new contract. Instead of quickly fixing their own mistake, they left me and my entire family — including elderly relatives visiting from Thailand — waiting about 90 minutes, and put the blame on me. There was visibly no interest in resolving a Sixt-caused error in a customer-friendly way.

The new contract was issued to me with an explicit written promise of "no additional costs." In reality my card was charged EUR 1,058.53 and only EUR 49.79 was refunded — EUR 651.79 short of the agreed price. Despite numerous emails, several service cases (incl. 17746792, 17790294, 17793877) and a clear deadline, I have received no substantive resolution, only automated replies and referrals elsewhere. Every error was Sixt's — I will gladly update this review once a fair refund is made.

Disgusting customer service. Sixt staff ignored warnings and forced me into a nightmare.

I accidentally left my prescription Gucci sunglasses in the rear door pocket of rented vehicle, when returning it at Berlin BER on this Sunday at 19:30.

Just 4 hours later, I returned to the lot. The car had already been fully cleaned by their crew, and a visual check through the window confirmed the glasses were gone. They were stolen immediately within that 4-hour window by the cleaning staff.

What followed was an absolute nightmare of corporate neglect. Knowing the item was missing, I sent over couple of urgent emails to the BER stations, but no response. I talked to their customer success team over the phone and they sounded so cool like it happens everyday and certainly I will receive the sunglasses through lost and found soon, they asked me to fill the online form. I did that and also chatted with their "live chat" team which said no need to go to BER airport as it will be of no use and everything has to go through form which I filled. Despite that I went to the BER airport next day and team told me they ignored my emails and vehicle has been re-rented which will be returned after 4 days in Dusseldorf. They downplayed like their washing crew can't stole the glasses hence, they might be inside the car and they wrote to customer directly to check them and also they wrote dusseldorf team to freeze the car so it could be searched. Even after this, Sixt completely ignored every single email. Because their digital customer service is non-existent, I was forced to waste hours of my life traveling back and forth to the BER airport multiple times just to get tiny, useless updates from stone-faced desk staff.

To hide their lack of care, another front desk staff casually joked, "maybe our car wash team stole them," and tried to pass the buck by claiming the glasses "might still be in the car with the next renter," using this as an excuse for why they wouldn't help me.

I have officially filed a criminal complaint for suspected misappropriation of lost property (§ 246 StGB) with the Berlin Police against the cleaning crew now.

Till date, neither online form is answered, nor any email. All updates I just got by going directly at BER airport again and again and talked to on-ground frontdesk employees.

The issue is not just the theft. The issue is that Sixt has built a system that actively isolates and ignores customers, treating a major loss with utter laziness. Rent from anyone else.

Very friendly

Very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive staff. Expert advice regarding the vehicle, insurance options, etc.
I highly recommend the option to select the vehicle (booked category or upgrades) via the app about 30 minutes before pickup. Fast and smooth vehicle handover.
This location has become my go-to spot for rental cars.
I would recommend it to anyone in the area looking to rent a car.

I booked a 7-seater vehicle - ekstra charge

I booked a 7-seater vehicle (5+1) more than two months in advance and expected the reservation to be honored. When I arrived at the Flensburg pickup location, the vehicle I had reserved was not available.

First, I was offered an Audi A5, which was completely unsuitable for my needs. After explaining that I had specifically booked a 7-seater, I was told that an 8-seater vehicle was available, but only if I paid an additional €58.

When I questioned the extra charge, the branch manager told me that the surcharge would only be €30 and that he would adjust it later. Unfortunately, after this experience, I am not confident that what customers are told can be relied upon.

I had already paid online, yet I was asked to provide my card again and another €358 was reserved. The entire process felt disorganized and confusing.

What makes this even more frustrating is that it appeared the type of vehicle I originally booked may actually have been available, but I was told it could not be provided because the vehicle would be returned to Hamburg Airport. Customers should not have to pay extra because of internal fleet management decisions.

I booked the correct vehicle category more than two months in advance specifically to avoid problems like this. Instead, I was asked to pay more due to circumstances that were not my fault.

Overall, a very disappointing experience at the Flensburg branch. Poor communication, inconsistent information, and additional charges for a vehicle that should have been available. I would not recommend this location, especially for families who require a specific vehicle size and expect their reservation to be respected.

Due to the way this reservation was handled, I am considering seeking legal advice regarding whether the vehicle availability and pricing were presented accurately. As a customer, I feel I was charged extra for a problem that should not have existed given my reservation was made more than two months in advance.
