Stay away. Hertz charges an extra 500€ after rental without sending an invoice or any damage to the car. No invoice, no explanation, no way of contacting them. Apparently they routinely do this.

Be Aware fraudulent upgrades

Picked up a pre paid car at Munich airport. Was told I had been allocated a station wagon ( had ordered a small car) even asked that it would not be too big would it? After rental get charged £50 for it. Hertz are claiming this was discussed and they gave me a good deal - pure lies and fraudulent practices by their desk clerk no doubt for some commission. Yet another customer they have lost forever

1000 Euro fee

I reserved a car to pick up at Charles de Gaulle airport. After a 9 hour overnight flight from Seattle, i was told at the Hertz counter that I had rented a manual transmission vehicle, and did I prefer an automatic? No mention of any upcharge, and so I agreed and foolishly signed off. They charged me a 1000 Euro fee. Caveat Emptor!

I rented a car and I had to extend the rental period due to an unexpected emergency. No one ever picked up the phone at the rental station at Frankfurt airport! I tried at least 50 times! No response to several emails. No central service phone number. Its a shame and this was my last rental at this poor company

2 months no DEPOSIT

I’m writing this review regarding I’m waiting for my deposit for 2 months and I have been going back and forth for my money which is not a small sum. I have book the vehicle for one day on the 18th April 2026 and returned 19th April 2026 it’s the 19th of June and I haven’t received my deposit. This is poor service from staff and they can’t help and rectify the situation. I will be posting constantly reviews till my deposit is paid then is unacceptable and unprofessional.

Horrible Experience

Having been a loyal Hertz customer for two decades, the most recent rental experience in April with that company has been absolutely horrible. Prepaid $800.00 for a car at Munich airport online and needed to modify the dates because Lufthansa cancelled two flights; each time I attempted to modify rental online, the website crashed.I then sent numerous emails to Hertz, requesting assistance. None came. I then called Hertz in the U.S. and was told the rental was cancelled. Same result when I used the Hertz.com chat. I rented another vehicle with Hertz at the cost of $844.00. I sent more emails to Hertz about the situation, no response. At Munich airport, asked staff about the refund for the original rental and was told it would be about 2 weeks for the refund to arrive. Didn't happen. To this day, I haven't been refunded the $800.00 I prepaid for a car, but couldn't drive because I wasn't able to modify the rental dates. In addition to that, rental car I ended up with broke down, I was left without vehicle for four hours and have not been refunded for that amount of time or the gas that was in the car. Adding insult to injury, Hertz now claims the replacement car was returned with damage even though I could prove that the damage was noted on the damage report. I will not rent from that company again.

SCAMMERS. Stay well away.

***WARNING*** SCAM! FRAUD! THIEVES! STAY FAR AWAY!

Rental Agreement No: 291360661
Reservation ID: L60023145D9

I have literally never come across such a blatant scam in my life. I rented a car from Hertz in Dusseldorf airport. Car was fine. Returned the car, Hertz employee checked it over, said everything was fine, no damage, obviously because there wasn't a scratch on it. All good! Then a few days later I get an invoice charging me €496 for "damage"! I was gobsmacked. I looked at the photos they attached. They have highlighted a literal speck of dirt about 1mm in size. I'm not exaggerating. You can see in the photo the width of the numbers in the number plate is exactly 1cm and the spot of dirt they highlighted is at most 10% that width which makes it 0.1cm or 1mm. But the sneakiest and most scummy bit is telling me that we're all good and then charging me this huge bill later and literally stealing my money. Because this so called "damage" was never shown to me at the time I returned the car there was no way for me to inspect it. I'm sure I could have just wiped it off. The money has already been taken off my card. I have contacted them and am awaiting a reply. I don't know how Hertz can allow these people at this branch to drag down their reputation but if you look at other reviews you can see they are trying it with many people and this is their way of scamming everyone and making extra money. I will update this review when I hear back from them but I am absolutely fuming as it is.

I have been charged over £500 for apparently returning the car without refueling it, even though I did so at a petrol station less than 500m from the drop-off, and I have a receipt to prove it. The man checking the car when I dropped it off told me everything was OK. Thrifty/Hertz are not responding to my emails or phone calls.

Fraud!

Fraud!! Scam!!

Very disappointing and misleading experience with Hertz.

When I picked up my rental car, the employee explained the amount being charged as a deposit and never clearly informed me that additional insurance was being added to my contract. At no point was I given a transparent explanation that I would be paying an extra €210 for optional coverage.

I only discovered the charge later when I received the final bill. This is not how optional services should be sold. Customers should be clearly told what they are paying for and given a genuine opportunity to accept or decline additional products. Presenting extra insurance as part of a deposit, or failing to properly explain it, is misleading and creates a serious lack of trust.

What frustrates me most is not the amount itself, but the lack of transparency during the rental process. I expected honest communication from a well-known international rental company, but instead I was left with an unexpected charge that I never knowingly agreed to purchase.

I strongly advise future customers to carefully review every item on the rental agreement and ask for written confirmation of all charges before signing. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this location.

Disgraceful Rental Car Company

Be very careful when you pick up the car, drive into the light (out of the garage), and take the best video (and pictures) of every detail on the car. On return, do the same thing. The staff at the return counter seemingly makes the return easy for you by telling you "not to wait", whereas in fact, Hertz then claims you acknowledged alleged damage and had to rush away without a signature. Overall, very bad experience. I'm actually shocked by the level of fraudulent behaviour; it feels like a complete set-up. I assume rental car companies make their money nowadays with false damage claims rather than with rental fees. I suggest just avoiding renting a car altogether!

Loyal customer and they tried to scam me...

Loyal Hertz customer for 15 years without a single issue and then suddenly this shit:

Picked up an Opel Corsa, found a scratch not in the damage protocol. Reported it immediately — showed the staff, emailed photos within 20 minutes, did everything right. They still charged me almost 1,000 EUR for the exact same scratch I had already reported. The charge overdrew my bank account as they also still were holding the deposit!

Incredulously, when I disputed the charge, they told me my evidence (time stamped email and clear time stamped photos) was insufficient to prove I wasn't responsible for the damage. That was infuriating.

It took weeks, a Verbraucherzentrale complaint, and threats of legal action to get a full refund. It should never have gotten that far.

Always photograph every inch of the car before you drive off, and don't assume they'll do the right thing. And never give in into their shit!

Worst car rental service ever

By far the worst car rental service I have experienced in my whole life.

Giving 1 star because the system does not allow zero or even negative stars.

After a 34+ hour trip when my wife arrived to Frankfurt, we went to pick up the car at HErtz earlier than the original time. Important note: giving some margin is strongly encouraged since some rental car companies have the policy that if you don't show up within an hour you may loose your rental and still be charged.

When we arrived to the Hertz office in FRA airport and after waiting in line for a considerable time, the HErtz employee told us our booking was cancelled. The booking had been via an independent car rental broker.

Luckily the car broker was very efficient and solved the issue which turned out to be was a total lack of professionality by the HErtz staff. Basically the problem was that Hertz runs two offices at the airport and apparently don't know about each other so if your car is supposed to be in Terminal 1 and you go to Terminal 2 they don't know anything and send you back home. With this in mind, if these people are unable to sync the two offices, you should be extremely concerned about the technical and safety condition of whatever car you may be renting from these guys...

In any case, complete lack of good manners and not even apologizing for the waste of time and anxiety they caused .

Then, just ot make things even better, when bringing back the car I ran late (FRA airport is far from the friendliest airport and moving around is difficult) and a 37' delay was used by Hertz to charge an additional day at a higher daily rate.

I contacted the German Hertz customer service by chat:not possible to make a call, only interacting with a bot and eventually a chat (this is the kind of service you can expect from this people) who redirected me to report to an email address from which I have got zero feedback..... Bravo HERTZ!! You are the best company when it comes at ghosting your customers.

In summary, I have learnt the lesson and to the best of my possibilities I will never rent a car with Hertz.

Awful experience with Hertz, still trying to get our money back

Awful experience with Hertz. Picked up a car from Munich Airport using a prepaid voucher from Autoeurope. I needed the car from 8am but didn’t want to return it til 11am on the 10th day, so I paid for 11 days. Wasn’t provided with a condition report so I took video and photos of numerous scratches on the car (condition report which was emailed later said there was no damage). When we returned the car (just after 10am), the returns area was very busy and the attendant instructed me to just leave the key in the car. I said I wanted him to check the car in but he rudely ignored me and walked away. Turns out he took another hour to check it in. I heard nothing from Hertz, but several days later noticed a charge of nearly AUD$900 on my credit card. I emailed Hertz Munich a couple of times, but no response. Eventually I emailed Hertz Germany and a week later received a response. They claimed that a) I had returned the car late, and b) there was a scratch that I was responsible for. Weeks of emailing back and forth, providing clear photographic evidence that the damage was already there, they argued the toss, even provided a metadata report for my photos which they thought proved their position, but in fact just proved mine. Eventually, 5 weeks into dealing with them, they informed me of the “good news” that they were refunding the damage amount, but the extra day’s charge stood. Unbelievably, they seemed to be unable to count the days between two dates, because I returned the car within 10 days and 3 hours (as stated on the voucher and agreement), but they kept arguing that this was late (remember I paid for 11 days and had to keep telling them to look at the voucher!) It’s now 6 weeks of arguing with them, they have retracted the damage claim, but I’m still out of pocket $150 for the ‘extra day’, which is complete rubbish. I’m still fighting it, but please be warned, Hertz Germany is NOT to be trusted. I wish I’d read the other terrible reviews here before renting from them. Very good lesson when hiring a car too - take detailed video and photos all round and under the car before you drive away. This evidence is what we needed to prove we didn’t cause the damage. Awful awful company, will never hire from Hertz again.

Hertz charged me three times the rental…

Fraud by claiming damage!

Hertz charged me three times the rental fee for a barely noticeable bumper scratch that they claim occurred during the rental period! This is pure fraud! The scratches they claim are actually quite insignificant, as they didn't happen during my rental and it was almost impossible to notice them upon pickup.

It's impossible for a customer to notice even tiny scratches when picking up their vehicle. And I'm absolutely certain the car was never involved in any accident like that during my rental period.

I will never do business with Hertz again. I feel completely scammed!

Invented costs, false damage charges, be aware of Hertz Munich airport!

We rented a car via third party, got it from Hertz, Munich airport. They did not have the car that was agreed, but gave instead different. Hertz took deposit of 2 x 700 e, other for them other for Thrifty. I asked about it, they said it is usual way. We returned the car with full tank, no damages and on time. Next day Hertz charged my credit card 1470 e. I thought it was the deposit, but still after a month they did not return it. I never received any invoice. I tried to call dozens of times, nobody answered. No email address no way to contact them. Except Hertz customer support, which did not handle Europes rentals, so they transferred me to talk with AI. Incredible. Now, after four moths the third party rental company got the invoice from Hertz, where are peculiar insurance lines (which i already have paid), and surprise 1 360 e damage cost plus something else!! When we returned the car, the rental guy checked it, and said all good. No I am handling this with credit card company, third party rental company and European Consumer Center. Also I got into contact with Thrifty, they have been very helpful and try to help. The cheater one is Hertz. I consider this as fraud, and I am not going to give up my money for cheaters.

Stuttgart Airport: pressured add-ons and duplicate insurance charge

Stuttgart Airport: pressured add-ons and duplicate insurance charge

At Hertz/Thrifty Stuttgart Airport I was charged for add-ons I did not knowingly intend to buy. I arrived late. At the counter I was told the booked category was not available and I had to accept an upgrade to receive a car at a huge cost (more than double).

After signing, I found these paid items on the agreement:
• Super Cover insurance €188.94
• Upgrade Charges €285.00

I already had broker coverage and did not want additional insurance. It was not made clear to me that “Super Cover” was a separate paid product duplicating existing coverage. A total of €621.51 was later posted to my bank. My complaint is ongoing, but the response so far is only “you signed.”

If you rent here: ask them to explain each add-on line-by-line and do not sign until you understand exactly what is optional.
