WILLIAM l-IAlt'lLEY MILLER, OIF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNEE OF JAMES L. BATES, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 33,987, dated November 25, 1862;l reissue No. 3,108, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT* IN STEAM-ENGINE PACKING.
To ALL WHoM 1T MAY ooNoERN;
Bs it known that .Latinasv L. BATES, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Islandfdid inventa new and improved Packing for'StuHing-Boxes and' other partsof Steam-Engines,
Pumps, und other Apparatus und I do hereby declare .that the following is a. full, clesr, and exact description J of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of. this specification, in which- .Figure 1 represents u longitudinal view of a. piece of theimproved packing. ,I
Figure 2 is n central section of a smiling-box, having the packing applied within it. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
The nnture of this invention consists in providing n. lling of cork, cotton, or other suitable materiaal, lith' n. fibrous cover, composed of cotton or other soft fibrous material, woven, braided, or wound 'around the-filling.
To enublc others skilled in the art to make anduse this invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. v
covered.
A represents a. iillet or strip of cork cut of uniform size, and bn cotton-covered twine, with which itis c is un open brading,"io't' twine or other light material, braidedo'n the cori" bct'orethe outer covering-5 ie' applied, its object being to strengthen the cork and enable it'to be bent without being broken.
.lfhe external covering b is composed of n. twine thickly covered with soft cotton, as shown in the drnwing the cotton being wound upon it in the form of a. soft sliver, and theV twin-e being merely to hold the soft cotton together, und give it o desirable degreeof tenacity. The said covering b is wound closely around the braided fillet of cork,'or this' covering b is first wound around the cork and the braided cover applied externsllypis shown by letter c.
The packing m'ay be mede in` pieces of-anyzlength, and of any required diameter or thickness, und-kept for use in coils of convenient size, its ilexibility being suicient to enable it to be coiledup. The cork may be mnde in pieces of asgreut s. length as can be obtained, or ofuny convenient length, united by scarf-joints.
One great advantage of the\braidiug"c is thnt it strengthens and preservesithe scarf-joints bywhich the lilletsof cork n're united, and makes a c/mpsct covering-which renders the packing more serviceable, und` enables the filling more readily to be brought into use. The said braiding is indispensable, 'since Iwithout it the cork would be destroyed too rapidly for practical use. v
This packing is usedv in the same manner as India-rubber or other packing, which isused in fillets or strips, being saturated us much as possiblewrith melted tallo'w, and then coiled up within the stuffing-box or other joint where it is-to befused, and pressed tight by the gland or followerf The advantages'of this packing, as compared with India-rubber packing, here been demonstrated by nctunl trial in the smiling-boxes of a locomotive-piston rod.. 0f the India-rubber packing, costing one dollar per pound,
vabout. one pound is necessary for each smiling-box. 0f this pecking, costing but half a d'ollsr a. pound, -only veue-third of a. pound is required hence its first cost is but one-sixth that of India. rubber, but as it iss-t least three times more durable, its real cost is only about one-twentieth that of India rubber. It is more pliable and sustains n greater pressure thun India-rubber packing, and it does not melt, and clog the piston-rod, as the Indio rubber does. p J v What I yclaim us my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the fillet or strip of cork A, and the covering b,`composed of twine covered with soft cotton or other soft fibrous material, substantially as herein specified.
' 2.` The braidinglc, applied in combination with the fillet or strip A and covering b, substantially. .herein specified. y
vSi. y.The construction of packing, substantially es herein set forth. 4. The construction of Ebrous-braid coverings for packing, substantially as shown.
A WM. HARTLEY MILLER.
