Description

N-PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASNlNGTON. D C
UNITED STATES RICHARD MARTIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PISTON-ROD PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,163, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MARTIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Packngs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and` exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let ters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to furnish a packing which may be made at a cheaper rate than the varieties now in use, and of any indeinite length, and which shall possess the advantage of a diminution of friction by means ofthe use of a wire covering, and also the ad-V vantage of a vegetable brous exterior as regards lubrication and resistance to the passage of steam through the stuffing-box.
The said invention consists of a steam-packing made in lengths and covered with wire and hemp or other fibrous material combined to form said covering by being interwoven, intertwisted, or interbraided with each other, so as to present a partly vegetable or lbrous and a partly-metallic external surface, as hereinafter more fully set forth, the wire, from its more unyielding nature, receiving the most of the friction, and the vegetable ber lubricating the piston-rod and resisting the passage of the steam through the stuffing-box.
Figure l is a view of a sample of packing made according to my improvement and showing one mode of carrying out my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view of a sample of packing made according to my improvement and showing another mode of carrying out my invention. Fig. 4 is a crosssection ot' Fig. 3.
Fig. 1 represents a sample of packing embodying my invention, which is made with a central strand, A, of rubber, hemp, or equivalent, surrounded by strands B, of hemp or other vegetable ber, alternating with similar strands C, covered or surrounded with wire,
said surrou nding strands B and C being coiled l or wound spirally about the central strand, A, as represented in Figs. l and 2.
Fig. 3 represents a sample of packing einbodying my invention, which is made with a central strand,D, of rubber, hemp, or equivalent, surrounded or wound with a woven vegetable material, E, and then covered with a layer of wire-cloth, F, the weft of which is formed of vegetable ber and the woof of wire, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4.
In both samples the distinctive features of my invention are apparent-viz., the combination of wire and vegetable fiber in the external covering or outside portion ot' the packing, the wire, from its more unyielding nature, receivin g the most of the friction, and furnishing the advantages of a metallic packing, and the vegetable ber filling the insterstices of the wire holding the lubricating substance, and insuring the constant and sufficient lubrication of the piston-rod, and which also leaves no openings about or between the wi res through which the steam can lind its way, thus forming a much more serviceable packing, made in lengths, and that can be manufactured at a less expense and sold at a less price than the metal packings now in use.
I claim- A steam-packing made by combining with the body of said packing a covering consisting of wire and fibrous material interwoven, intertwisted, or interbraided together to form said covering, substantially as set forth.
' RICHARD MARTIN.
