Specification of certain improvements in Metallic Packing for Piston-Rods, Svc., invented by JOHN YOUNG, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York.
Nature and Object of the Invention. l My invention has for its object to diminish the frictionoi` the rod in passing back and forth through the packing of the stuffing-box andy at the same time to furnish an economical and superior article; and consists of an ordinary hemp or other packing, or its equivalent, enclosed in a. net-workot` brass Wire, as hereinafter more fully described.
Description of the Drawings.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a piston-rod, stuingibox, gland, Aandmepresenting my improved packng enclosed in the stuiiing-box and pressed down. 4 i
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the piston-rod, StnHing-AbOX, and packing, looking to the right of the line a: z, fig. l'. I
Figure 3 isa view of one size of packing.
Figure 4 is a view of a larger size of packing, the wire being loosely netted to show the construction.
Figure 5 is a cross-section of iig. 4. l
General Descrzptz'on. A is the piston-rod; B is the stnng-box C is the gland; D is the packing, which is an ordinary hemp packing, covered with brass wire by either `Ninding, weaving, or braiding. The latter construction I prefer.V
Said packing D is manufactured of various sizes, and sold in lengths to suit purchasers. When used, a suicient length is cnt from 'the roll to form a ring around the inside of the stuing-box, as shown in iig. 2.- Another length is then cut o' and placed within the stuiing-box upon the first ringfcare being taken to break joints as indicated by the dotted lines in tig. 2, and so on, according to the depth .of the stuffing-box. By the pressnre of the gland C the packing D'A takes the shape represented in tigri, or even a rectangular form, if suicieut pressure is applied. The packing should be saturated with tallow or other lubricating substance/before being placed in -the stuing-box, the same as other packing.
Among the advantages of-this packing are the readiness with which it is {itted to, and inserted in, a stuing;
box of any size; its perfection as a packing completely resisting the passage of steam or Water; the very great reduction in the friction; the long time which the packing will wear without being'renewed; and the tine polish which its use gives to the rod.
Claim. I claim a metallic packing formed by enclosing an ordinary hemp or other packing, or its equivalent, in a netting of brass wire, by either winding, weaving, or braiding the enclosing wire around it, substantially as and to the effect described. A
JOHN YOUNG.
