, Be it knownithat I, WILLIAM-HARTLEY MIL-Len, of the city of Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia;-
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement whereby the Packing of Stufiing-Bo-xe's of Engines, Pumps, &c., and of otherjoints of machinery, may be greatly improved; and I hereby declare that The nature of my invention consists in the use of calcimine china-clay, white clay, or their equivalents,

. Geleimine is a well-known article of white, used for whitening walls, and for other purposes,v rendered practically free from grit, has a soft-soapy feel, and it can be pulverized and used in a dry state, or it can be compohnded with liquids or melted wax-and used as a. paste. Chino-clay and white clay are similar in their nature to calcimine.
When calcimine it'nsed in combination witll'fiblous material, it protectsthe fibre from the effects of the heat, and becomes a good substitute for soapstone as an ingredient of packing. Itcen be applied to any form of packing by combining it with lubricants, metallic, fibrous, or other materials used in the manufacture of packing. In some instances, I combine it with fibrous material by taking a given number of strands or threads of fibrous material, and twisting, braiding, plaiting, or weaving theminto rope-form, securing thereby the calcimino in ajoint or stulfing-box.
I do not limit'mysclf to any specific form or method of application.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The use of calcimine, china-clay, or white clay, or their equivalents, as a substitute for dry-powdered soapstone, and other dry-powdered substances, in their combination with fibrous or other materials in the manufacture of packing. I s
2. Theme of calcimine, china-clay, white clay, or their equivalents, for the purpose above described, in
the manner above described, or any other practical application thereof, whereby said substances'bccome ingredients of packing for the stufling-boxes of engines, pumps, and for thejoints of other machinery.
