GEORGE F. HQFFMAN, 015
ELPHIA, PENNSYLV ROPE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 2, 1935a Amputation filed March 20, 1.915. Serial No. 15,893.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HOFFMAN, a citizen of theUm'ted States,- residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the countyof Philadelphia and State -of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ropes, of which the-following is a specification.
Twisted. ropes of the kind frequently used for clothes-lines, if made of low grade cot-' ton, such as waste or linters, are objectionable because they present the characteristic dark and undesirable color of that kind of low grade stock. The expense of bleaching or dyeing is so great that these expedients cannot be applied in the manufacture of rope from such low grade cotton, and even if these expedients could be availed of, the rope would not be water-repellent. It is perhaps possible to coat finished rope made of such low grade stock after the plies have been twisted, but the coating, while waterrepellent, collects in lumps or ridges and adheres in the crevices between the plies, thus presenting an unsightly appearance. Moreover, dyeing and bleaching, and the coating referred to, do not add to the strength of the rope.
Ob ects of the present invention are not only to overcome the above mentioned defects and disadvantages, but also to impart strength to the rope while keeping it of the same size, and to provide a sightly, water- .repellent, white, twisted rope made of such low grade ofi-colored stock and possessed of increased strength.
The accompanying drawing is a more or less diagrammatic side view, drawn to a much enlarged scale, of a rope embodying features of the invention and showing plies and'strands partially untwisted and with a part of the coating removed to expose the stock. A
In the drawings 1, is discolored or dark colored cotton such as waste or linters or equivalent stock. V
2, is a coating which is superficially applied to'the plies 3, before they are twisted or primarily, so as to impregnate them to a greater or less extent. This coating, if desired, may be similarly applied to the strands 4, so that the word plies may be understood to include the strands.
The coating is water-repellent and it may advantageously contain a pigment in order to impart a white color to the rope. By the application of the coating to the plies rimarily or before twisting, the coating oes not collect in the crevices 5, of the rope and so the latter presents a sightly appearance. Furthermore the coating binds the fibers together and in that way imparts strength with the result that the rope can be made smaller for the same strength. I
The coating may consist of fluid glue or glue-like material which, when dry, is water-repellent, together with 'a white substance or mineral pigment material in cases where the rope is to be made white.
The coating can be applied to the plies by drawing them through a bath of it and then permitting the coating to dry whereupon the plies are twisted.
I What I claim is:
A water repellent white twisted rope consisting of low grade dark colored cotton, as
waste or linters, and having its plies primarily, z. e., before they are twisted, superficially impregnated or coated with a dry coating of glue and a white mineral pigment, whereby strength is imparted to the low grade cotton and collection of the coating in the crevices is avoided and an attractive appearance imparted, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I
