ToaZZ whom it may concern:
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
' i GEQRGE SP ICER, F PERU, INDIANA, ASSIGNOB T0 GEORGE N. CLYMER, OF ROCHESTER, INDIANA. i
i: 1 Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. SPICER, a
citizen of i the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful 1 Improvements in Road-Scrapers, of
11 which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to road scrapers.
One object of the invention is to provide a road scraper embodying such characteristics that it will insure an eflicient scraping v of the road and provide for an eflicient leveling of the center of the road subsequent to the scraping thereof.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a road scraper embodying r i such characteristics that it may be readily folded so that it may be easily transported from one place to another.
- With the above and otherobjects in View, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes ma be made in the form, proportion, size an .minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is an elevation illustrating the device 1 y in its folded condition for transportation over a road. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the leveling device disconnected from the drag.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character A indicates a drag or scraper embodying the preferred form of my invention, in which it will be seen that I employ opposite sets of scraping bars 1 and 2 with the sets Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1910.
Application filed May 7, .1909. Serial No. 494,675.
rear ends beyond the rear ends of the beams 6 and 7. i I
Connected to the forward ends of the beams 5 and 6 is a cross piece 9, while connected to the forward ends of the beams 7 and 8 is a cross piece 10. The inner ends of these cross pieces 9 and 10 are spaced, and in their spaced relation connected together through the instrumentality of the hinge straps l1 and the hinge pintle 12, the latter bein disposed in alinement with the hinge pintfe 3 before referred to.
Connected to the device and preferably at the forward ends of the outermost beams 5 and 8 are draft appliances 13 for a purpose obviously understood, and upon the outermost beams I also connect the seat legs 14 of the seats 15, whereby the weight of the operators of the device, if two be employed, may be placed upon the device at both sides. Obviously, however, these seats 15 could be connected to the innermost beams 6 and 7, or if preferred a seat may be secured to each of the beams, or only one seat mi ht be employed if desired, or none at all; for that matter.
The reference letter B indicates a trailer or leveling device, which is composed of two rearwardly diverging bars 16, whose divergency is the reverse to the divergency of the bars 1 and 2 of the main frame A of the device. These bars 16 are much shorter than the bars 1 and 2 and have their inner ends hingeclly connected together at 17 with a cross plece 18 connected to the rear ends thereof and hingedly connected at 19 with the hinge connection 19 in alinement with the hinge connection 17, and preferably with bothof the hinge connections 17 and 19 disposed in direct alinement with the hinge pintle 3 of the main structure. In fact, the
leveling device is preferably disposed cen trally of and in the rear of the main structure A and it is connected to the latter through the instrumentality of link 0011- nections 20 and '21 which are loosely connected at 22 to the leveling member B and at 23 to the main structure A. These link connections 20 and 21 provide for a slight lateral play of the leveler B and also permit of the placing of the leveler B upon the main frame A, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of the device for road scraping purposes, it is placed upon the road and pulled thereover in the usual manner, and
as the road is scraped, the dirt, owing to the forward divergency of the bars 1 and 2, is caused tobe worked toward the center of the scraper and pass out rearwardly thereof beneath the hinge pintle 3, when the leveler B causes that dirt which is forced toward the center of'the road to be leveled, the rearward outward divergency of the bars 16 of the latter providing for an even leveling of the roadway.
'All of the elements composing my invention may be of any suitable material, and it will be understood that, ifydesired, I may provide wooden bars 1 and 2 and 16, and to the forward edges of these wooden bars I may secure in any suitable manner metallic scraping strips 24:, as clearly shown in the drawings.
When it is desired to take the device out of commission, it is only necessary to fold the leveler B upon its hinges 17 and 19and place the same upon one of the sections of the main structure A. The main structure is then folded upon its hinge connections, as shown in Fig. 3, with the leveler B between the sections. The device may then be drawn along with the bars 1 or 2, according to which section is not folded over upon the other, and the bars still remaining upon the ground may be dragged longitudinally of the roadway to transport the device after the fashion of a sleigh, as will be understood.
What is claimed is 1. In a scraping device, a main frame ineluding pairs of beams, a cross piece connecting each pair of beams, a hinge connection between said cross pieces, front and rear pairs of scraper bars secured to said beams, the pairs of scraper bars diverging forwardly, means for hingedly connecting the pairs of scraper bars together thereby forming the main frame into two sections, whereby one section of the main frame may be folded upon the other section thereof and said other section serve as a runner to transport the device, a leveling frame including rea-rwardly diverging scraper bars hingedly connected together, and link connections between the rear scraper bars of the main frame and the scraper bars of the leveling frame, the leveling frame being smaller than the main frame and when folded adapted to be disposed between the folded sections of the main frame without disconnecting said link connections and thereby transport the leveling frame upon said runner section.'
2; In a scraping device, a frame including pairs of beams, a cross piece connecting'each pair of beams, a hingeconnection between said cross pieces, front and rear pairs of scraper bars secured tosaid beams, hinges connected tothe inner ends of said scraper bars, and a single hinge pintle extending through said hinges, thereby forming the frameinto two sections, whereby one section of the frame maybe folded upon the other section thereof and said other section thereof serve as a runner to transport the device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W; SPICER.
