To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Saco, in the county of Phillips and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Road-Working Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to a roadworking device, and has particular reference to that class of road-working devices which embody'in their construction a frame with a plurality of scraping blades mounted on the frame and adapted to act as a drag when pulled over-the surface of the road to be worked.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which will deposit the dirt accumulated in front of its scraping blades in the low places in the road, and thus effectively level the road surface.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the device that it may be dragged over the surface of the road with the blades in scraping relation relative thereto with minimum resistance to the draft.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for adjusting the angle of the scraping blades relativeto the road surface.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be more readily understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a preferred embodiment of the device;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a schematic view showing the relative position of the scraper blades with the road surface to be worked.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the device in its preferred form comprises a frame made up of angle irons of proper size and strength, consisting of two pairs of parallel side arms 5 and 6' with a pair of in termediate arms 7 arranged parallel with the pairs of side arms and in substantially the same plane. This structure is properly braced by means of the diagonal members 8 which are joined together in their middle and secured to the lower one of the intermediate pair of arms 7. The ends of the diagonal braces are secured to the lower ones side arms and the of the pairs of side members. This construction will offer a comparatively cheap but durable frame which will withstand the hard use to which the device will necessarily be put to in use.
Arranged transversely of the frame, with their relatively broad side surfaces presented in the direction of the line of draft, are the scraper blades, which preferably comprise a rear blade 9 which extends from and is connected to the side arms 5 and 6 of the frame and also connected to the intermedlate arms 7. As stated, this blade extends entirely across the frame, preferably at the rear thereof. In front of the blade 9 are a plurality of short blades 10, each of which extend only a part of the way across the frame, with their respective ends secured to the side arms and the intermediate arms. These blades are preferably arranged in staggered relation. with their inner ends in overlapping relation with each other, in other words, their ends extend to the opposite sides of the intermediate arms 7. Arranged directly opposite the forward blade 10, and carried by the end of the side arms 6, is a short blade 11 which acts as a stabilizer or skid for the left-hand front part of the device.
All of the blades are so mounted on the intermediate arms that their angles may be collectively adjusted relative to the surface of the road to be worked, whereupon they may be regulated as occasion demands. The means for regulating the blades preferably comprises a single lever 12, which is pivotally connected to both the upper and lower parallelly arranged angle arms of the intermediate memher 7, with a notch segment 18 associated with the lever and connected to the lower one of the arms 7. A pawl on the lever 12 is adapted to operate to engage the notches in the segment 13 for maintaining different adjustments of the blades. Both the upper and lower arms of the frame structure are pivotally connected together by links 14;. and the blades 9, 10 and 11 are mounted to the end of these links; therefore, when the lever 12 is manipulated to impart a thrust in opposite directions to the upper'and lower arms of the frame structure, the links 14 would be disposed at different angles, likewise the scraping relation of the blades relative to the road would be adjusted. The device may be dragged over the road surface blades supported on blades being ,staggeredly .sisting of a blades supported on said frame substantially at right angles to "their ends terminating in overlapping rela tion, and means for adjusting the angles of the blades relative to the road surface.
