F; 80mm;
ROAD SCRAPER. APPLICATLOH FILED HIM 31,1916.
Patented Jan. 9, 1917.
2 SHEETS-SHEET I ma m alibmmmg I if FRANK BODINE, 0T RICHWOOD, MINNESOTA.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
' Application filed May 31,
vTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BoniNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richwood, in the county of Becker and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ro.ad-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification. n
The invention relates to a road grader or leveler designed with a view to providing a' wheeled implement which may be readily transported to the place of use in comparatively compact form, and which in use may be adjusted to secure the desired result.
The improved road grader comprises a main beam in the form of a wheeled truck, to which the leveling beams are connected in a manner to permit their adjustment for various purposes.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved road grader; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the draft attachment omitted; Fig. 4 is a plan showing the leveling means in the inoperative position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved road leveler or grader comprises a main beam 1, of appropriate length, mounted at the respective ends 'upon ground wheels 2 and 3.
Combined with the main beam 1, are what I term leveling beams l and These beams are of duplicate construction and each include a beam like element on the relatively inner-side and at the forward end is arranged a scraper or cutting blade 6. The blade is secured to the edge of the beam and is of concavo-convex formation in vertical section in order to provide for a rolling or spreading of the material collected by the scraper. I The leveling beams are mounted at their rear ends to the main beam'by flexible connectors, such as chains 7 and the connee tion between the chains, which are fixed to the main beam and the leveling beams, is
such that the length of the chains between the main beam and leveling beams may be transferred at will, for a purpose which Will later appeal:
Each leveling beam isiprov'ided with a bar 8 secured to the upper surface thereof, and projecting inwardly therefrom, the stay Specification of Letters Patent.

bar being connected to the main beam by a flexible connector 9. The levelingbeamsare each also provided with an upright post 10, which through the medium of a chain 11 is connected to the chain 9, the main beam terminals of the chains 9 and 11, being arranged for adjustable connection so that the lerigth of the chains may be transferred at wi The main beam is. provided with a cross strut 12, of a length to permit the disposi- .tion of the forward ends of the leveling beams thereon, uprights 13 being secured at the ends of the strut to prevent lateral displacement of the leveling beams when tachment of the draft animals, and at the rear end is provided a seat 14 for the operator.
in. place. The main beam 1s also provided with a hook or other clevis connection for the at- In use, it will be obvious that through the inward by the blades 6, it is obvious that the desired width of crown of the road may be controlled by the adjustment of the chains 7. Of course, in transport from place to place the leveling means are supported upon the main beam and upon the strut 12.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secureby Letters Patent is A road scraper includlng a main beam, leveling beams arranged on opposite sides thereof, adjustable chain connections .hs-
tween the rear ends of the leveling beams and the main beam, chains secured to the leveling beams and adjustably secured to the main beam to vary the distance ofthe forward ends of the leveling beams from the v main beam at Wlll, rods rising vertically I from the leveling beams, and chains connected to the upper ends of said rods with the 'first mentioned chains to tilting the leveling beams.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FRANK BQ DINE.
